LTS FIELDWORK REFLECTION

1. Are there improvements in your tutees attitude towards the
subject/s taught over time? Specify.
Before I started to teach my tutee, I wondered how it is to be a
tutor. I was long asking myself how to do it and wanted to search
for the answer what the feeling was of being one, an LTS tutor.
And when I started to teach, I met a Grade 6 Tutee named
Agustina Noay. She is bright, artistic and shes a little bit shy. With
continued tutoring and conversation with each other and with our
small group composed of Williamthats me, Virly Jane, Jayson,
Cherry May and Blanche, we became like barkadas and began
that so called job rotation with each other teaching another then
another around the group giving the chance of exposing our little
tutees with different tutors within the group. As a result, they get
to be taught Math, English, a little bit of Science, games, drawing,
splashed with watching Disney movies and delicious snacks. Our
varied and unique way of teaching the children made them
motivated to learn with us and listen with every word we say
theyre absorbing them all. The atmosphere was not that of a
face-to-face serious conversation with each other but a
surrounding that they are used to which improved their
comprehension of the lessons than when they first met us.
Theyve gain interest in studying with us in a way of not forcing
them but making them like to. She painted me in the drawing
book using the crayons I have given in advance included in it
captions in English language with grammars that are excellent in
structureI was impressed of her, very much.

Personal Experience

A. What are the problems encountered and the solutions taken?

At first, there was no problem in teaching my tutee but when
there were other children, about 3, whose tutors were absent or
who did not have any, I was confused on what topic to teach them
in Math because they, including my original tutee, have different

Grades in elementary. And at times I gave them something to

answer in Math, the lower grades had difficulty of understanding
the questions so I gave her another question by asking her what
was currently the topic that was discussed by their teacher then I
made another question sheet and made her answer. They were
very respectful and friendly and I had none to complain about
them. We get to eat snacks and watch movies as a reward of
finishing the math problems Ive given and a bit of photo shoot in
every end of the tutoring.
B. What have you learned from the experience? How did your
experience in teaching your tutee/s help you to become an
effective teacher?
Ive learned many things while teaching the children; Ive
learned that even the poor have their own hidden talents that
cant be underestimated by anyone. While teaching, I realized
that children need to be convinced, inspired and motivated to
learn and listen to you and I did it by giving her snacks and letting
her watch movies after each session as rewards. Moreover, it is
important to greet them with a smile when they arrive to make
them close to you and not be afraid whenever youre going to
teach him or her. Smiling on him or her will make him/her smile
back creating an atmosphere that is necessary for efficient
learning.

Personal Experience

What is the impact of LTS in your life and how can you apply it as
a student, son or daughter, future professional and citizen of your
country?
It is important to cultivate the soon to be foundation of our
country which is todays children, the future holders of success.
Even of that little short time tutoring them, we know that in our
hearts the feeling of being proud that weve helped someone by
our own hands predominates. With that little amount of help, it
can benefit someone. With that smile, youve inspired someone.
With small deeds comes great change. For me, with that effort
Ive put during each session in teaching my tutee, I know that Ive

already made a difference in her life and the others by being

there, as a student of Silliman University, as a cadet of SU-LTS.

REFLECTION: What was the one way you now

realized that God used you as a blessing in your

position as a tutor to your tutee? Share your thoughts
below.
Actually, my name was not really posted in the bulletin board
of accepted students for LTSand that means I will not be an LTS
cadet. I was sad at that moment thinking of the circumstances
that the CWTS have no available slot and that the only choice left
for me was entering ROTC children in Elementary and having a
tutee. I then figured it that what I was doing was not let alone to
avoid the suffering torture of the ROTC training, not to avoid the
community service of the CWTS but to teach and help children
learn more. It was not merely teaching and playing with the
children but somehow I was given the opportunity to help the
future of the children, the future of their children, the future of
their region, the future of my country. By sharing my knowledge
Ive made a difference that will catapult them to SUCCESS. A
small ounce of HELP can make great CHANGES. ^.^which I dont
want to, no offense to the ROTC cadets. The reason was that
ROTC training is like a torture for me and that just imagining me
standing there at the SU Ball field below the scorching heat of the
sun traumatizes my brain. I was thinking that Ive already suffered
from my high school CAT, so, I should not be again in this ROTC.
But, I was not really convinced that I can no longer be an LTS
cadetI was filled with eagerness to convince Maam Llu. So, I
joined the LTS line in the Run for the Environment event and got
some tickets required for LTS cadets even though I still am not
one. After the program, I, together with my older sister and

friends Vijane and Jayson, asked Maam Llu if I can still be an LTS
cadet. Luckily, after some conversation she agreed and then at
that time I was formally an LTS cadet.
I was very happy at that point that I will not have to fill up
some ROTC forms and not to be grilled under the sun. I was glad
that God answered my prayers and it was a very lucky day for me
that I almost jumped in joy.
But as I began my duty as an LTS cadet, joining sessions by
professionals then having landed at Maslog Elementary School
and finally at Little Children of the Philippines, I realized that
theres more to being it, there was something more in being one
of the LTS cadets. And soon, I began to experience what its like to
be a tutor teaching
