Methodology

Classroom Management
The term classroom management refers to the moment-by-moment decisions made and actions
taken by the teacher in class, eg. Writing on the whiteboard, giving instructions, orgasnising the
class into pairs, etc.
This session focuses on the role of linguistic interaction which is perhaps one of the least
understood aspects of teaching, but it is clearly crucial to the success of the teaching/learning
event.
Classroom management includes:
General conditions: seating, technical equipment, blackboard, desks etc.
Teachers voice projection, eye contact
Teachers position
Praise
Timing
Using the blackboard
Atmosphere
Discipline
Teachers instructions
Type of interaction
Groupwork and pairwork:
Three types of interactive pairwork: open pairs, closed pairs and mobile pairs

Giving instruction:
Teachers should be able to grade instructions to the level of the group, organize them, segment
them and check comprehension.
Simplify the following instructions for setting up a pair work activity and arrange the
information in a logical order.

Well, were going to do this role-play, see, and were in the greengrocers. Now theres a
slight problem. The greengrocer hasnt got all the fruit the customer wants and he hasnt
got any change. Not for a fiver anyway. Now, the customers got a 5 pound note but he
doesnt want to spend more money than 1 pound. OK? Look, Ill give you out these
cards. I want you to carry out this role-play in pairs. Right? Now, I think youd better be
the customer and you the greengrocer. OK? Right. Now, you know who you are? Right?
Now, youll see if you are the greengrocer a set of prices and, if you are the customer,
youll see a shopping list. I want you to stick to whats on those cards. All right. Are you
ready? OK Get on with it.
