Contemporary Issue
MANILA, Philippines Despite the "positive" trends in global ratings against hunger, the fact
remains that one in every 9 people still suffers from chronic hunger.
In the past decade, there has been significant progress when it comes to poverty and
malnutrition. More than 100 million people have escaped the hunger and poverty trap, according
to the World Food Programme (WFP), due to the collective and combined efforts of public and
private stakeholders.
Unfortunately, several factors in recent years have hindered the global momentum for
complete hunger mitigation. These include climate change, natural disasters, and discontinued
investments in projects. (During a global food crisis in 2009, the Roadmap to End Global Hunger
(REGH) was developed by organizations and advocacy groups. The framework employed a US
strategy to propagate food security worldwide.
Nearing the end of its initial 5-year timeline, the original signatories decided to update the REGH
in February 2015. This was done to reaffirm the global calls for a more comprehensive
approach to a food secure world.
Reflection Paper about Corporal Works of Mercy
Feed the Hungry
Nowadays a lot of Filipino people are suffering from a lot of contemporary hardships in
their lives and one of them is financial problems and poverty. Due to that, almost 19% of our
fellow citizens are experiencing hunger and malnutrition which grows year by year. Skinny
children dying of diseases because of nutritional deficiencies, poor families grieving of hunger
and some eating just once a day and worse none, and the worst is some spends their whole life
traveling around the streets of urban cities and sleeping at sidewalks just to search for a living .
Many of us who is more fortunate than the others arent aware of that. Some also tend to ignore
it but as sons of God we all have a responsibility to care for our fellow neighbours.
In this contemporary issue the best corporal work of mercy that can relate and respond to
this is feeding the hungry. Feeding the hungry doesnt just mean to merely feed them with food

and drinks but to also provide them with knowledge that can help them to continue their lives
independently without relying on others. As the great quote says Give a man a fish, and you
feed him for a day; Show him how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime Giving education to
them is a very big thing for their future for it will be much more efficient and convenient for you
and them because they will know how to support their own needs and they will be given the
chance to bring the best out of their lives.
As a student, I will do my best to share the blessings that God had given to me unto
others who are those in great need much more than me. Time and place are sure a huge hassle for
me as a medical technology student but I will utilize those free times in order to help others like
street children which hangs around the four great streets of UST by giving them food and money
if my budget permits it. Seeing their smiles as I share my blessings with them gives me the
utmost joy and inspires me more to live a life aligned to the path shown to us by God as merciful
Christians. Gladly in our University they offer courses like National Service Training Program
which hones and trains us to be more charitable Christians that aid in community problems and
outreach to people who are in great need. They also teach us a lot of things that also floats in the
same boat as the several corporal works of mercy.
As a very talkative student I will also use my voice to teach and share the knowledge that
I gained to the youth and the needy for them to be able to use it and enhance their lives as
Christians who doesnt just live for themselves but as Christians who lives for the sake of the
others and continues to spread the teachings of God for us to create a society worthy of being
saved by God.
If I will be victorious in conquering the goal of being a doctor I will also lend a hand in
giving something like free feeding programs and medical missions. I will also share free
nutrional medicines and vitamins to the youths who are malnourished for them to regain their
healthy bodies and serve as the ones who are the key to success of our future generations. Being
someone who is compassionate of helping others I will give my all in performing the said
activities for this life of mine is not just for me but for everybody who is created by God.
The long journey now awaits, the journey for us to make this world a better place for us
and our fellow human-beings. To help each other and thrive to achieve a common goal is what I

will aim for. By this I know that even little prayers of mine will also give help thats why I will
also make prayers that helps in restoring faith in people who suffers hungers that makes them
decide to abandon God. I will also try encouraging people that I will encounter to always help
someone who is in need and in hunger. Because this is our main purpose to live for the sake of
others and develop together as good children of God.
