CHAIRMANS
MESSAGE
Dear Members,
It was an early morning start but that did not deter the
Ladies Tennis Sub-Committee (LTSC) from putting on a warm
and fun welcome for all participants at the recent Inter-Club
tournament held on the grass courts at RBSC on Saturday,
27th February 2016. The tournament proper got underway
at 8.30 am and the tennis was of a high quality and very
competitive. It was particularly pleasing to see past chairwomen
of the LTSC lending their support too. Their previous efforts in
getting ladies tennis to the current levels at both Clubs were
duly noted and honoured. Anyone reading Thai language
newspapers and magazines in the weeks following the event
could not have failed to notice the extraordinary amount of
positive press coverage that the PR folk on the LTSC were able
to squeeze out of various editors! Well done to all concerned
and a special mention to Khun Pamornthip Sripaisal, current
LTSC chairwoman, and tournament director Khun Rittee
Putipanpong for doing RBSC proud.
On Thursday, 7th April 2016 the GC presided over the
annual recognition party for those who have reached 40
years of RBSC membership this year. A very stylish plaque
was presented to each of the awardees as a memento of their
milestone and there were more than a few comments along
the lines of how fast time flies and how many great memories
people had of times at the Club.
One of those receiving their 40 years membership memento
was Khun Yossagorn Burakamkovit who reminded me of the
many soccer matches we enjoyed together (often on opposing
sides) in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He kindly (I think)
told me about the RBSC over 55s team and asked if I would
like to join a forthcoming match. Not wanting to seem as if I
were not up for a sporting challenge I accepted straight away.
At the time of writing I am having severe second thoughts but
feel that I cant back out having already said yes. The match will
have taken place by the time this issue of RBSC magazine is
published, so I fully expect to be hobbling around for at least the
first week of May. Thats if I am lucky!

RBSC Chairman Nigel Oakins opens the Ladies Inter-Club

Tennis Tournament

In my April issue message I mentioned the GCs extra meeting

to look specifically at creating a long term plan for the RBSC
and the Polo Club. That meeting will have taken place in the
last week of the month, so it will be interesting to see what your
current GC comes up with in our preliminary considerations
on the matter. I imagine there are a great number of Members
who would have their own thoughts on the future directions
we should take and the possibilities looking forward. We will
certainly be widening out the discussion process in due course
but for now would welcome all views from anyone interested
in contributing. Please feel free to email any thoughts or
suggestions to members of the GC or to comments@rbsc.org.

GMS
PERSPECTIVE
Dear Members,
The great thing about a Club like ours is the diversity
of the Members. This was brought home to me the other
night when I was privileged to attend a special gathering of
Members who, between them, enjoyed a vast number of
years of Club experience. People at the event had seen the
Club in the backdrop of world history come and go, world
events I only remember from my parents and nascent
childhood. And yet, they were united in one common
view the Sports Club was always there, the place theyd
always met each week, come what may. The presentation
ceremony of special mementos for those who have
been members for 40+ years was a wonderful night.
On the evening of Thursday, 7th April 2016, nostalgia
was in the air, but also a positive vibe for the future, with
grandchildren (also Members) playing their part.
As a Club we always look to help our local communities.
Hence as a part of the Charity Committees latest drive,
we are organizing the 3rd Medical Assistance Services
initiative in late May. The plan is to take a team of doctors,
medical professionals, and volunteers to a needy area of
Kanchanaburi Province. To that end, we invite those of you
with medical qualifications doctors, nurses, and surgeons
and anyone else who would like to help with admin on
the day, to contact the Project and Events department to
confirm your participation. You can call 02-652-5000
ext. 150-154 for enquires and more information.
The recent Special Event put on by the Entertainment
Committee was The Glass Replay by Jiraphan
Ansvananda and Friends. I cant remember such a
wonderful night of live music. Well over 100 Members and
their guests gathered at the RBSC Polo Clubs Rajkreetha
Hall in early April for the evening and they were rewarded
with wonderful live entertainment.

RBSC MAGAZINE

Finally, the Management at both Clubs is used to receiving

complaints from Members on the issue of smoking. Those
who wish to smoke are kindly reminded to do so only at the
designated areas at both Clubs. Thank you.

Courting Success
The immaculate RBSC grass tennis courts were the venue for 29th
Ladies Inter Club Team Tennis Tournament played on Saturday, 27th
February 2016. This is the third time that the Club has hosted the
prestigious tournament since its inception and almost 200 attendees
including the RBSC lady aces and players from eight Bangkok clubs and
their supporters basked in glorious sunshine. The visiting teams
comprised Bangkok International Group [BIG], British Club, Japanese
Association, Rodfai Team, Silom A, Silom B, and the RBSC Polo Club.
A cheerful spirit of camaraderie filled the early morning air with players
and organizers donning prerequisite crisp white outfits and cozying up
around a light breakfast. At 8am, MC Tharntip Cowie welcomed the
competing teams on court, with 3-14 year old youth players
accompanied by their proud parents being a highlight during the
opening ceremonies. These were presided over by RBSC Chairman Mr.
Nigel Oakins, who gave an opening speech and then accompanied by
Khun Pairoh Tuchinda, the first LTSC chairwoman, Khun Pamornthip
Sripaisal, current LTSC chairwoman, and Khun Chin
Kampanatsanyakorn, chairman of the Tennis Committee cut the
ribbon to get the tournament underway.
Taking part were a number of former national team players who ensured
that the standard of play was very high. At the end of the day it was the
teams of Silom A and Rodfai who took first and second place
respectively. The RBSC team was a very creditable third, all the while
demonstrating the team spirit for which the Ladies Tennis Sub
Committee and its players and fans are known. The tournaments
smooth progress from start to finish was a testament to the
professionalism of tournament director Khun Rittee Putipanpong, the
team coaches, and the Tennis Section staff.

Club Jogging Section first. Congratulations to
Khun Nattanun Varophas (4hrs:56mins:40secs),
Khun Ramaimas Bowra (6:30:00), and Khun Tanyarat
Sribhibhadh (6:20:26). The other RBSC runners were
Khun Thiraphong Chansiri (4:22:00),
Khun Pongsornchai Smitasiri (4:46:00), and
Khun Surachada Bowra (5:50:00). All enjoyed the
challenge of not only running fast but also simply
completing the distance, a feat which many of the
36,000 participants in the marathon failed to achieve!

Dear Golfing Members,

Over this past month the weather has been exceptionally dry and
hot and yet we have been able to carry out our scheduled
maintenance programme, so the course has remained in good
condition. However, it will soon be necessary to up the maintenance of
fairways and greens in anticipation of the forthcoming rainy season.
This is important because it ensures that course playing conditions
remain good throughout the rest of the year. Hence please bear with
us if there are minor disruptions on certain holes in the coming weeks.
We hope the work will be carried out quickly and without too much
inconvenience to players.
On behalf of the Golf Committee, I would like to congratulate 2016
Team Championship winners Dr. Suriya Chakkaphak and Khun Sathit
Sarathulsingh for their outstanding effort in the competition last month.
In addition, I would like to congratulate the International Team,
captained by Mr. Suvir Sachdev, for winning the long-standing Rama
VII Trophy this year.
Finally, we have a busy couple of months coming up in terms of
tournament action and the Golf Committee invites Section members
to participate in the upcoming Navy Invitational, H.E. Nakasone
Trophy, Hongladarom Cup, and Mixed-Team Competition. We also
ask for your support for the away Interport matches against SICC in
July and HKGC later in the year.
We wish you good health and enjoy golfing at RBSC.

The oldest tournament in the Golf Section is a team

competition for a trophy presented by His Majesty
Rama VII, which was first contested in 1927. Four teams
comprising Thailand, UK, USA, and an International Team
compete for the venerated silverware annually. This year
the tournament, played on Saturday, 9th April, witnessed
some of the best scoring ever seen as all four teams posted
incredibly low numbers. The difference between first and
last place was only 9 points, which is amazing when one
considers that each team consisted of 8 players. In the end
the International Team emerged victorious with a score of
295 points to beat runners-up the UK Team by 5 points.

Commenting on the win, International Team captain Suvir

fortunate that young Rishi played the best round of his
life, shooting a -1 under gross 65. It seems everyone was

Suriya & Sathit Win Team Championship At Last!

The annual RBSC Team Championship is played in a Foursomes
format with each player hitting alternate shots. A total of 22 teams
took part in the 2-day handicap tournament. There were a number
of interesting partnerships with two Father-and-Son teams, a team
comprising two brothers, and another boasting the current Club
Champion and the Kings Cup winner. Scoring was excellent in the
early rounds, particularly a net 65 by Dr. Suriya and Khun Sathit to
take the lead by 1 stroke. The top 10 teams were separated by only
5 strokes after the first day, leading to expectations of a close final
round. Dr. Suriya and Khun Sathit looked to have the tournament in
their grasp as they took a commanding lead over playing partners Dr.
Rattachat and Dr. Tonphong with only 4 holes to play. However, the

15 years and their persistence finally paid off. We have come close on a number of occasions, said a relieved Dr.
Suriya after the tournament. But we never quite made it and we nearly threw it away again at the end with the two
Doctors playing so well! I speak for both of us when I say were delighted to have finally won it. We are both looking
forward to defending the title next year.

Interport Matches

March was a busy month in terms of Interport matches with

Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) being the second team to visit
the RBSC during the month. A total of 54 golfers from Malaysia
made the annual trip for the 2-day Interport match. The visiting
team included a lot of strong players in the Seladang Cup handicap
match and comfortably beat the hosts by a score of 49 points to 33.
The results in the off-the-stick Erawan Cup were entirely different
with the RBSC team emerging overwhelming victors by a score
of 17 points to 3. In keeping with tradition, the RSGC team took
the Seladang Cup back with them and left the Erawan Cup for
the RBSC golfers to take to Malaysia when they visit for the return
match at the end of April.

LADIES GOLF CAPTAINS MESSAGE

Dear Lady Golf Members,
It has been a scorching past few weeks both on and off the golf
course here at RBSC. First of all, the Mom Kobkaew Cup stroke play
competition was played on the morning of Monday, 4th April and I
have to say, I was most impressed with Ausanee Sosothukul as she
held her nerve to win a thrilling tournament. Adding to her growing
collection of Club trophies, Ausanee sank her final putt to win by 3
strokes from Sida Schmidt. Lets hope the competition is just as hot for
next years cup.
The weather these past few weeks may have been scorching but
this has not dampened the spirits of our lady golfers. Even with daily
temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, theres has been
plenty of activity on the course as well punctuated with occasional
roars of laughter and applause for fine play. It is this camaraderie that
truly endears both the game of golf and the spirit within our Section.
There is hardly any time for players to relax however, as next up is
the Phya Srivikorn Cup on Monday, 16th May, followed by the RBSC
Chairmans Cup in mid-June. With so much up for grabs, some ladies
may want to take a look at the golf tips with Pro Bill this month and get
some practice in at the driving range. Controlling your shoulders the
primary power source in a golf swing is highly influential on where
your ball ends up on the fairway.
See you on the course!

If the shoulders are level at the top of

As you start the downswing, the

The Shoulders
The shoulders are what I call the primary power source.
When putting, for example, the shoulders are the only thing
that moves, certainly not the wrists. The shoulders are also
highly influential on where your ball goes.
At address, you want your shoulders to be square to the
target line (pic 1). I see many average golfers whose shoulders
are too open to the left (pic2). This leads to an outside to
inside swing path, which usually results in a slice.
When making a backswing, you want make a full 90
shoulder turn. The left shoulder will be slightly lower than the

right shoulder (pic3). A common mistake at this point is to let

the shoulders become level which means you have come up
and out of your posture (pic4).
Now heres where it gets tricky. When beginning the
downswing, the right shoulder should drop slightly (pic5). You
want a feeling that the shoulders are moving vertically (not
horizontally). As the right shoulder drops, you should feel your
right elbow coming into your right hip.
As the club head is approaching the ball you want to keep
that right shoulder back so that the club head comes through
to the ball more from the inside (pic6).
When finishing the swing you want a full shoulder turn.
Always finish with the shoulders facing to the left of your
target (pic7).

56 FLAVOURS -RBSC

Meaty Treats
Rib and loin cuts dominate on the
RBSC menu throughout May with a
selection of succulent beef, pork, and
lamb offerings guaranteed to satisfy a
hearty appetite. Highlights include a
starter of smoked pork loin salad
served with a refreshing pineapple
sauce.
Main courses take in Asia with a dish
of delicious jerked spiced Kurobuta
pork and pimento served with jacket
potato and mixed grilled vegetables.
Rich and tender is pot-roasted
Australian beef short rib. Slowcooked and rich in flavour, it is served
with mixed grilled vegetables. As an
alternative, try traditional BBQ pork
spare rib served with pineapple
coleslaw, corn on the cob, and fries.
Star of the show is undoubtedly
grilled Australian lamb chop and
bacon with avocado mint (2 chops).
The chops are cooked wrapped
snugly in a blanket of bacon to retain
all the great flavours of the grill and
the dish is given a lift with the clean
freshness of avocado and mint. It is
served with beans, grilled mushrooms
and potato tots.
Finish off with a cup of coffee and
one of the scrumptious Desserts of
the Month; a beautifully light green
tea mousse, or a slice of sweet and
aromatic lychee cake.

Entrepreneur
From Rags to Riches

In the first of a two-part

series, RBSC Magazines takes
a look at seven of the worlds
most successful entrepreneurs
who were born into hardship
but overcame all the odds to
become billionaires. From
undoubtedly the worlds first
billionaire entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie - to the
Ukrainian immigrant - Jan
Koum - who sold his
messaging application to
Facebook for a cool $19
billion.

RBSC MAGAZINE

Andrew Carnegie The worlds first

entrepreneur
This American powerhouse of an industrialist was
actually born to a poor handloom weaver in Scotland and
grew up in extreme poverty. Living in an unheated,
one-room house, Carnegie would often sleep to forget
the misery of his hunger. A true entrepreneur, he was a
hard worker who learned about his business from the
ground up. From a railroad worker to a business owner, he
began making investments in steel and oil companies,
which in later years would earn him huge returns. By
1889, Carnegie Steel Corporation was the largest of its
kind in the world and Carnegie went on to become the
richest man in the world.
Known as one of builders of America who helped
shape the nation, in 1901 he sold Carnegie Steel to JP
Morgan for US$480 million ($380 billion in todays
money) and became a philanthropist. He donated millions
to the New York Public Library, established the Carnegie
Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, which is now known
as Carnegie-Mellon University, created the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and formed
the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Samuel Walton
The milkman and paperboy

Oprah Winfrey
The queen of media

This entrepreneur took a small grocery store and built it

into the giant Walmart supermarket chain, amassing a
fortune of over $30 billion. Growing up during the Great
Depression he had numerous chores such as milking the
family cow and delivering the Columbia Daily Tribune
newspaper. During his college years, he worked various
odd jobs, including waiting tables in exchange for meals.
After World War II, he started managing a variety store
but quickly grew bored and decided to branch out on his
own.

Best known for her multi-award-winning talk show The

Oprah Winfrey Show the highest-rated program of its
kind in history Oprah Winfrey is dubbed as the Queen
of all media and ranked as the richest African-American
of the 20th century. She was born into poverty in rural
Mississippi to a teenage single mother and has often
spoken about the hardships she experienced during
childhood, saying she was raped at age 9 and at 13, after
suffering years of abuse, she ran away from home. As a
pregnant teen herself, her son, she said, died in infancy.

The young Walton decided to apply for a local bank

load to buy his first store, and thanks to simple innovations
in business, he soon bought his second store. Within 3
years, his sales volume grew to $225,000. The first true
Wal-Mart opened on 2nd July, 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas.
As they say, the rest is history. Forbes ranked Sam Walton
as the richest person in the United States from 1982 to
1988. Today, there more than 11,000 Wal-Mart stores
worldwide, employing more than 2.2 million people with
company revenues exceeding $480 billion per year. The
Walton family still retains a controlling 52% of the global
retailer.

While in high school, she landed a job in radio and

began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of
19. She got transferred to the daytime-talk-show arena
because of her emotional ad-lib delivery. She became a
millionaire at age 32 when her talk show went national.
She is credited with creating a more intimate confessional
form of media communication. Forbes international rich
list has listed her as the worlds only black billionaire from
2004 to 2006 and as the first black woman billionaire in
world history. As of 2015, she has a net worth in excess of
$3.1 billion and has overtaken former eBay CEO Meg
Whitman as the richest self-made woman in America.

Li Ka-shing
Asias richest man

Larry Ellison
The son of an unwed
Jewish mother

This Hong Kong business magnate, investor, and

philanthropist is the richest person in Asia, with a net
worth of $34 billion, according to the Bloomberg
Billionaires Index, as of April 2015. He was born in
Guangdong province, China. After his fathers death, he
was forced to leave school to support his family before he
turned 15. He found work at a plastics trading company
where he laboured 16 hours a day. After years of
back-breaking work, he was able to start his own
company, Cheung Kong Industries.

Founder of computer giant, Oracle Inc., Larry Ellison

was born into poverty in New York City. The child of an
unwed Jewish mother and an Italian American US Air
Force pilot, it is said that Ellison contracted pneumonia
when he was nine months old and his mother gave him up
for adoption. His adoptive mother was warm and loving,
while his adoptive father was unsupportive and distant. A
bright but inattentive student, he left the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign after his second year
without taking his final exams because his adoptive
mother had just died. Later, he attended the University of
Chicago for one term, where he first encountered
computer design.

According to a Harvard Business School article: From

his humble beginnings in China as a teachers son, a
refugee, and later as a salesman, Li provides a lesson in
integrity and adaptability. Through hard work, and a
reputation for remaining true to his internal moral
compass, he was able to build a business empire that
includes: banking, construction, real estate, plastics,
cellular phones, satellite television, cement production,
retail outlets (pharmacies and supermarkets), hotels,
domestic transportation (sky train), airports, electric
power, steel production, ports, and shipping. Today, Lis
businesses cover almost every facet of life in Hong Kong,
from electricity to telecommunications, from real estate to
retail, from shipping to the Internet. The Cheung Kong
Group operates in 55 countries and employs over
260,000 staff worldwide with annual revenues of over
$4 billion.

RBSC MAGAZINE

In 1977, he founded Software Development

Laboratories (SDL) with two partners and an investment
of $2,000. In 1982, the company became Oracle
Systems Corporation after its flagship product, the
Oracle database. Currently, Ellison owns stakes in
Salesforce.com, NetSuite, Quark Biotechnology Inc., and
Astex Pharmaceuticals. In September 2011, Ellison was
listed on the Forbes List of Billionaires as the fifth richest
man in the world. Ellison is still the third richest American,
with a net worth of about $49.6 billion as of March 2016.

Jan Koum The poor Ukrainian

immigrant

Dhirubhai Ambani The polyester prince

When Facebook announced that it was buying mobile

messaging startup WhatsApp for $19 billion in February
2014, the announcement caused quite a stir. Jan Koum,
the startups co-founder became the most talked about
entrepreneur overnight. Media reported that the
WhatsApp floored Mark Zuckerberg so much that the
record offer was made so that the two could become
friends. A true rags to riches hero, Koum was born and
raised in a village on the outskirts of Kiev, Ukraine, as the
only child of a housewife and a construction labourer.
Forbes reported that his former house had no hot water
and his parents feared that their phone was tapped by the
State and so rarely talked on it.

With a population second only to China, India too has

its share of rags to riches heroes. And Dhirubhai Ambani
is one of the best known among them. This founder of
Reliance Industries was one of three sons and two sisters.
An anecdote from his childhood is that he once bought a
tin of groundnut oil on credit from a local wholesaler and
sold the oil in retail on the roadside. He earned a few
rupees as profit from this transaction. Apparently, during
weekends when his school was closed, he used to set up
bhajia stalls at village fairs to make ends meet at home.
According to R-ADAG, when he was 17, he went to Aden
(now Yemen) in search of opportunity, and worked as a
dispatch clerk for A. Besse.

Koum immigrated to California with his mother when

he was 16 and took his job sweeping the floors of a
grocery store after which he would stand in line to collect
food stamps. A born natural at computer programming,
by 18, he had become an expert computer hacker and
accepted a job as an infrastructure engineer at Yahoo
rather than enter the criminal world of hacking. Shortly
after he met fellow programmer and Internet
entrepreneur Brian Acton while working at Ernst & Young
as a security tester. In January 2009, Koum bought an
iPhone and realized that it would spawn a whole new
industry of apps. On 24th February, 2009 (his 33rd
birthday), he incorporated WhatsApp Inc. in California.

That was in 1949. A couple of years later, the company

became a distributor for Shell products and Dhirubhai
was promoted to manage the companys oil-filling station
at the port of Aden. It was here that he dreamed of setting
up and owning a refinery, which he later realized with his
petrochemicals venture. After returning to India, he
started his first textile mill in Ahmednagar. Though his
businesses were a huge success, there were also issues
regarding Ambanis control over the short selling of his
company stocks. His detractors accused him of illegal or
unethical transactions and acts but an investigation by the
RBI did not find any evidence of it. By 2007, the
combined fortune of the Ambani family stood at $60
billion, making Ambanis the second richest family in the
world. Ambani died in July 2002 after suffering a major
stroke.

Drinking Water
From The Desert

Bye-Bye Jet Lag

Carbon-Eating Algae

Moroccan NGO Dar Si Hamad has

built the worlds largest fog harvester,
which provides fresh water for villagers
living in remote areas of the desert. The
massive installation measures 600
square metres, and it puts fog harvesting
into action for people living in arid,
landlocked southwest Morocco. As
mountain fog is abundant in the area six
months out of the year, Dar Si Hamad
utilized the CloudFisher technology to
install giant polymer nets between steel
poles in the Anti-Atlas mountain range.

We put up with jet lag as an annoying

side effect of travel, yet a new airplane
designed by Airbus could eliminate this
inconvenience. The A350 XWB
employs LED light technology to
minimize jet lag so that passengers can
arrive halfway around the world feeling
refreshed and ready for the day. Our
circadian rhythms are disrupted when
we move through multiple time zones,
but LED lighting can imitate the cycle of
sunrise and sunset to help the body
adapt during the flight.

As mountain fog is denser than

coastal fog, the result is that the system
provides more water. The collected
water is sent to locals via solar pumps
and pipes installed by the NGO in
partnership with other organizations,
foundations, and universities. The fog
harvester can produce up to 60 litres of
water per metre of net, and its already
making a difference for people affected
by desertification caused by climate
change. Over 400 people who never
before had running water now benefit
from the system.

The plane can display 16.7 million

lighting combinations, which allows it to
produce the right spectrum depending
on the time of day and where the plane
is in the world. The lighting is targeted
towards helping passengers bodies
prepare for the time zone of their
destination, so whatever time they arrive,
they can look forward to a restful sleep
that night. Airbus A350 XWB is
designed primarily for long flights,
which makes the technology that much
more beneficial to travellers.

The Earth has shown the many

different ways it tries to heal itself from
the destruction we cause. It turns out
large icebergs breaking off Antarctica
are actually countering the effects of
global warming by providing
sustenance for carbon
dioxide-devouring algae blooms. While
this cant completely soak up our
manmade emissions, it does create a
sizable dent in addressing climate
change. It has been proven that the
chunks of ice release iron and other
nutrients that fertilizes algae, which in
turn consumes 10 to 40 million tons of
carbon per year - as much as Sweden
or New Zealand produce in a year.

RBSC MAGAZINE

We were very surprised to find the

impact can extend up to 1,000
kilometres, stated professor Grant
Bigg of the University of Sheffield, one
of the authors of the study who pored
over satellite photos of Antarctic
icebergs from 2003 to 2013. So, while
we shouldnt rely on our slowly
receding polar ice caps to mitigate our
destructive patterns, it is fascinating to
see our Earth respond to rapid climate
change effects in healing ways.

RBSC POLO CLUB

MAY 2016

78

The RBSC Polo Club Management kindly reminds Members who wish to smoke within the Clubs environs
to do so only at the designated smoking room. This is located at the Verandah adjacent to the Air Conditioned Bar.
Your cooperation is appreciated. Furthermore, as the text below from www.healthline.com shows, why not quit the
habit entirely. Youll be glad you did.

The Effects of Smoking on the Body

Tobacco smoke is enormously harmful to your health. Cigarettes contain
about 600 ingredients. When they burn, they generate more than 7,000
chemicals, according to the American Lung Association. Many of those
chemicals are poisonous and at least 69 of them can cause cancer. The
mortality rate for smokers is three times that of people who never smoked,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US. Its
one of the leading causes of preventable death.

Central
Nervous System
One of the ingredients in tobacco is a moodaltering drug called nicotine. Nicotine reaches
your brain in mere seconds. Its a central
nervous system stimulant, so it makes you
feel more energized for a little while. As that
effect subsides, you feel tired and crave more.
Nicotine is habit forming. Smoking increases
risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and
poor eyesight. It can also weaken your sense of
taste and sense of smell, so food may become
less enjoyable.

Respiratory
System
When you inhale smoke, youre taking in
substances that can damage your lungs. Over
time, your lungs lose their ability to filter harmful
chemicals. Coughing cant clear out the toxins
sufficiently, so these toxins get trapped in the
lungs. Smokers have a higher risk of respiratory
infections, colds, and flu. In a condition called
emphysema, the air sacs in your lungs are
destroyed. In chronic bronchitis, the lining
of the tubes of the lungs becomes inflamed.
Over time, smokers are at increased risk of
developing these forms of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD). Long-term
smokers are also at increased risk of lung
cancer. Children whose parents smoke are
more prone to coughing, wheezing, and asthma
attacks than children whose parents dont.t

RBSC MAGAZINE

Cardiovascular
System
Smoking damages your entire cardiovascular
system. When nicotine hits your body, it gives
your blood sugar a boost. After a short time,
youre left feeling tired and craving more.
Nicotine causes blood vessels to tighten, which
restricts the flow of blood (peripheral artery
disease). Smoking lowers good cholesterol
levels and raises blood pressure, which can
result in stretching of the arteries and a buildup
of bad cholesterol (atherosclerosis). Smoking
raises the risk of forming blood clots. In the
long term, smokers are at greater risk of
blood cancer (leukemia). Theres a risk to
nonsmokers, too. Breathing secondhand smoke
has an immediate effect on the cardiovascular
system, increasing the risk of stroke, heart
attack, and coronary heart disease.

Skin, Hair, and

Nails (Integumentary System)
Some of the more obvious signs of smoking
involve the skin. The substances in tobacco
smoke actually change the structure of your
skin. Smoking causes skin discoloration,
wrinkles, and premature aging. Your fingernails
and the skin on your fingers may have yellow
staining from holding cigarettes. Smokers
usually develop yellow or brown stains on their
teeth. Hair holds on to the smell of tobacco long
after you put your cigarette out. It even clings to
nonsmokers.

Digestive System
Smokers are at great risk of developing
oral problems. Tobacco use can cause
gum inflammation (gingivitis) or infection
(periodontitis). These problems can lead
to tooth decay, tooth loss, and bad breath.
Smoking also increases risk of cancer of
the mouth, throat, larynx, and esophagus.
Smokers have higher rates of kidney cancer
and pancreatic cancer. Even cigar smokers
who dont inhale are at increased risk of mouth
cancer. Smoking also depresses appetite, so
you may not be getting all the nutrients your
body needs.

Sexuality and
Reproductive
System
Restricted blood flow can affect a mans
ability to get an erection. Both men and
women who smoke may have difficulty
achieving orgasm and are at higher risk of
infertility. Women who smoke may experience
menopause at an earlier age than nonsmoking
women. Smoking increases a womans risk of
cervical cancer. Babies born to mothers who
smoke while pregnant are at greater risk of
low birth weight, birth defects, and sudden
infant death syndrome (SIDS). Newborns who
breathe secondhand smoke suffer more ear
infections and asthma attacks.the nutrients your
body needs.
