This course analyses the role and activities of those involved in supply chain management decision making. It
emphasizes the importance of transportation planning, inventory control, warehouse management, development
of customer service standards, and procurement in the design and operation of supply and distribution systems.
The importance of information systems and the internet in supporting such activities is also discussed.
Special attention is given to the close working relationships with managers in other functional areas including
information systems, marketing, and international operation. At the end of the course attendants should apply
concepts and strategies in supply chain management. Traditionally industries focus on operation evaluation and
performance improvement of business processes; however, the deficiency of supply chain coordination results in
severe downgrade of business competitiveness. This course focuses on the systems approach to the planning,
analysis, design, development, and evaluation of supply chain management is exposed to.
Overview and Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Demonstrate how the supply chain management and logistics function of the firm should be aligned with
the firms overall operations strategy;
Explain, with reference to the practices of leading firms in both the manufacturing and the service sectors,
how effective supply chain management and logistics could provide the firm with sustainable competitive
advantages;
Identify the major drivers of supply chain performance and to elaborate upon the role which each driver
plays in creating a strategic fit with the firms overall operations strategy
Undertake competently a variety of analytical tasks that are at the core of supply chain management and
logistics, utilizing the appropriate methods and techniques (tasks such as distribution network
configuration, preparation of supply contracts, global optimization, etc.);
Specify and elaborate upon the performance measures for supply chains in different industries;
Value the strategic importance of good supply chain design, planning and operation for every firm.
