COLOR + CULTURE

Introduction
I am from Hialeah, but my CULTURE comes mainly from Pakistan, the land of my parents. I have chosen
Turkey to learn about their culture and how they use color, because it is also a Muslim country but with a
very different culture. I have been to both countries and found myself in awe as I experienced their
beautiful art and architecture. Both share some Islamic religious traditions but also demonstrate the
variety among the Muslims around the world.

GREEN - Though the green colour is
mandated only as 'dark green',[4] its
official and most consistent
representation is Pakistan green, which
is shaded distinctively darker. It
represents the religion of Islam.

RED - In a RGB colour space, the red

colour of the Turkish flag is composed of
89% red, 3.9% green and 9% blue .The
red colour on the Turkish flag is vivid
red. Represents the Blood of Turkish
Soldiers

BLACK was the color of the

flag of prophet Muhammad.
And after him the Abbasid
Empire. It is a color
designating the sacred.

PAKISTAN - The green represents Islam and the majority Muslims in

Pakistan and the white stripe representsreligious minorities and
minority religions.[6] In the centre, the crescent and star symbolizes
progress and light respectively.[6] The flag symbolizes Pakistan's
commitment to Islam and the rights of religious minorities.[7] It is
based on the original flag of the Muslim League, which itself drew
inspiration from the flag of the Sultanate of Delhi, the flag of Ottoman
Empire and the Flag of the Mughal Empire.
TURKEY - The red represents the blood of turkish soldiers at the time
of war they went through and how they survived .And The star and
crescent design appears on Ottoman flags beginning in the late 18th
or early 19th century. The introduction of the white star and crescent
on red as the flag of the Ottoman Empire dates to
the Tanzimat reforms of 1844.
ISLAM - Revered is the colour green, which has been associated with
Islam as a symbol of the religion itself. Green is the sacred colour of
Islam, and is used for the bindings of the Qur'an (the Muslim Holy
Book) and in the silken covers of the Sufi saints. It has been suggested
that green is revered because it was worn by Muhammad, but it also
symbolizes life and nature. When finally reaching paradise in the
afterlife, the Qur'an states, "ornaments shall be given to them therein
of bracelets of gold, and they shall wear green robes of fine silk and
thick silk brocade interwoven with gold, (18:31)" and they will be
"Reclining on green cushions and beautiful carpets (55:76)." In Islamic
culture green and gold are the colors of paradise.

Conclusion
Some of the most beautiful use of color in Islamic culture can be found in the Muslim places of worship,
the mosques. The colors are found in geometric tiles, painted calligraphy, in-laid marble, or stained glass,
the materials and methods are a diverse as people. I Introduced this presentation with an image from a
mosque of Pakistan, so I will conclude with a mosque of Turkey. It is a shame that our leaders carelessly
spread fear and hatred of all Muslims due to actions of a few criminals. The religion of Islam is at the root
of the beauty found in culture of Pakistan, Turkey, and so many other countries around the world. SIDDIQUI
