Summer 2012
Instructor: Dr. R. L. Clark, Jr.
Office: W-305
Office Hours: TBA on Bb
Telephone Number: 540-857-6262

Course Description: (3 Credits. Prerequisite: MTH 175 and MTH 177 or equivalent.) Introduces mechanics of
vector forces and space, scalar mass and time, emphasizes S.I. units and includes U.S. customary units.
Teaches equilibrium, free-body diagrams, moments, couples, distributed forces, centroids, moments of
inertia, analysis of two-force and multi-force members. Lecture 3 hrs. per week.
Goals and Objectives of the Course: The fundamental concepts of statics will be presented in 2 and 3
dimension. Vector notation will be used throughout the course. An introduction to MDSolids will be
presented. An introduction to mechanical section properties is also presented as required for stress analysis.
This course is fundamental for the areas of aerospace, civil, mechanical, and structural engineering. Other
disciplines benefit from the strong development of equilibrium concepts.
Course Meeting Requirements:
Posted Recorded Lectures - weekly
T/Th.: Live lectures online (9:30 am 10:45 am)
Online Assistance:
Online office hours will be held by faculty throughout the week (see Bb and Bb-IM).
Students may also develop online workgroups and use Bb Collaborate to work together.
Course Requirements: The course grade will be based on chapter online homework/training (via Mastering
Engineering), chapter quizzes (mini-Gifts) (via Bb or Mastering Engineering), two mid-terms (mid-Gifts) (which
must be proctored), and a final exam (final Gift). Opportunities may be granted for extra credit as well.
Details for administering quizzes, mid-terms, and the final exam will be given during the course of the
semester.

Classroom Policies:
1. You will be required to watch weekly lectures prior to coming to class.
2. Real-time lectures will be devoted to a review of material and then the application of that material to
problem-solving.
3. Online quizzes will be taken via Bb or Mastering Engineering (details to be presented in class). (YOU
MUST HAVE A METHOD TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK ELECTRONICALLY, EITHER USING A TABLET OR
SCANNER. YOU MUST ALSO BE ABLE TO CREATE A .pdf FILE. YOU CAN FIND FREEWARE AT:
http://www.cutepdf.com/.)
