30. BENEFICIARIES OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

BRINGING FORTH EXCELLENCE IN THE DISADVANTAGED
The kinetics of the high mission of producing human resource of highest caliber from the
potential disadvantaged youth involves recognizing the innate talent and research aptitude in
the youth and providing them an opportunity to carve a niche in their career. The Centre for
Manufacturing Research and Technology Utilization (CMRTU) is a medium through which a
number of aspirants have been elevated to the Zenith in their careers.
AN ARDUOUS TREK FROM THORN TO THRONE
Paulvizhian, a Scheduled Caste, (with an M.Tech. in Machine Design), hails from a humble
family background, whose father was a mining coolie in BGML, with meager earnings for
subsistence. Paul is one amongst seven children of his parents. He had to trek long distances
on foot for his schooling. He had a very arduous childhood experience, which was full of
thorns, which he managed to cruise along and came to study in the reputed University
Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, Bangalore. This was a crucial period in his career when
joined CMRTU.

Recognizing the young talent, CMRTU counseled and enthused him to complete his
engineering education up to Masters and also provided him the necessary financial
assistance. Later he was introduced to CMRTU, where he has registered for Ph.D.
Programme. This brought a miraculous change in his career.
He has traveled widely to present his research works in various international conferences. His
papers were well appreciated at the national conference on Recent advances in experimental
mechanics at IIT Kanpur.
He is now Reader & Chairman Board of Examiners, Postgraduate Studies, Bangalore
University, which is a prestigious position.
SAGA OF A SULLEN BOY WHO FOUGHT AGAINST VICISSITUDES
Shivarudraiah, a Masters in Machine Design, also a Scheduled Caste, aged 35 years, grew
amidst abject poverty in the village of Urdigere, Tumkur Taluk, Tumkur District, devoid of even
basic minimum amenities. It was a small hamlet, from where he had to trek long distances for
attending schools. Overcoming all the Vicissitudes, he completed his schooling and Pre
University Education from Tumkur.
The sudden transition from Village life to the Metropolis was a hot ghee in the gullet of young
shivarudraiah. Fortunately for him, there was a solace in CMRTU, which provided him proper
counseling and acclimatized him to the changed social circumstances, consequent upon
which he obtained successfully Bachelors and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Shivarudraiah is now a dedicated researcher with a number of research publications to his
credit.
A PHOENIX WHO BLOSSOMED FROM ASHES
Krishna, an orphan at infancy, hailing from a hamlet near Ramanagaram, had an awful and
checkered childhood and had to bear the brunt of misfortune. He had to walk long distances
for schooling with least care and encouragement. However, the poor boy with his spiritual
inclination, used to attend Sathsangh of Kaivara Thathaiah, the seer of Kalachakra fame,
which prevented him from going astray.
He had neither caretakers at home nor anybody to instruct him in the right path. He did his BE
from PES College of Engineering Madya after passing the Pre-University course from the
Government Junior College Ramanagaram. He was one of the few Alumni to get entry into
professional course.
After acquiring BE in Automobile Engineering, he had a stint of career at a local textile factory
in Ramanagaram and Azad Coach Builders. It was when Krishna was working on a temporary

basis in M/s Azad. He was introduced to CMRTU and was provided moral support which was
required to unleash the native genius.
Krishna stood up to the great expectations of his mentor and thereafter he never looked back.
Krishna came out with a number of innovative research publications at national and
international level. He completed his Masters and is now undertaking his doctoral studies.
YOUNGSTER ON CROSS ROADS SEES THE LIGHT
Thipperudrappa, (an M.Tech), a married unemployed Scheduled Caste youth from a remote
village of Chitradurga who had gone astray was identified as a potential researcher with
analytical abilities by CMRTU, and given the position of training in-charge of SC/ST skill
promotion programmes of the Centre for Social Service and Skills promotion established by
SCS. This helped him to sustain himself and his family, while simultaneously pursuing his
Doctoral Programme.
The background in social service empowered him to get employment in Shramik Vidyapeeta,
a Government Organisation where he is presently the Programme officer.

Thus, the

youngster on cross roads, saw the light.

MOULDING A CUTTING EDGE SCIENTIST
Nagarajan, a scheduled caste from the neighbouring state of Tamilnadu, had Masters in
Engineering. He had always aspired for higher degrees in vain. CMRTU was then in the
limelight and Mr. Nagarajan was enchanted from the success stories of the less fortunate who
carved a niche in the society.
As a low profiled scientist at LRDE, he elevated himself to the higher echelons and moulded
into a cutting edge scientist after acquiring his Ph.D. degree through the Centre.
A GIANT TECHNOCRAT RISEN FROM HUMILIATION
Munivenkatarayappa born in a Scheduled caste family in North Karnataka with not a morsel to
eat had to fight the gruesome days of his childhood in the scorching Sun in black cotton soils.
He obtained his BE degree in Mechanical Engineering from Poojya Doddappa Appa College
of Engineering, Gulbarga.
He was provided a free seat in the Hostel with additional remuneration for subsistence. He
dreamt of obtaining his MS in Technological Operations from BITS Pilani. He acquired
computing skills and research expertise, which provided him the springboard to elevate
himself to the position of Divisional Manager in a Multinational company. Munivenkatarayappa
is now a proud technocrat who rose from humiliation.

AT THE THRESHOLD OF BRIGHT CAREER ONLY DUE TO PROPPING

Jayalakshmi, a fatherless but bright girl from Shimoga had a very arduous childhood, with
meager earnings by her mother working as a cook. Never perturbed by poverty, she
continued her studies to score very high marks in Pre-University course enough to fetch a
seat in Engineering at the Jawaharlal Nehru College of Engineering, Shimoga. Accepting to
join Engineering she was looking for financial support. Upon hearing about her from one of
her colleagues, she was supported financially. She has now successfully completed her
Bachelors in Engineering and is happy with a job in multinationals.
IMPOVERISHED RANI NOW AN IPS ASPIRANT
Rani, the daughter of a small time jobber as a peon with unclean habits and an alcoholic
addict was vested with the domestic responsibility from culinary duty to milching cow. He was
forced to look after the family at a tender age consequent upon which, she was in the verge of
discontinuing her studies after Matriculation. At this stage of her life, there was a sparkle of
light in her life when she came to SKIP incidentally which offered her counseling and financial
assistance to continue her studies. This was a turnaround in her career, which paved the way
for pursuing predegree education in her favourite arts stream with HEPS, which she cleared
with flying colours. She was encouraged to take up Bachelor of Arts, which she completed
successfully with flying colours scoring 76 % in aggregate. This is a bewildering achievement
from a slum lass who had her education throughout in Government Institutions. There were
options for her to pursue Masters degree. She has chosen to get a rigorous training for IPS.
She strongly believes in serving people and providing security for the disadvantaged.
DEJECTION TO DISTINCTION
Venkatesh, brother of Rani and son of an uncouth illiterate and not as merited as Rani was an
SSLC Dropout. SKIP plunged into action in averting him from becoming a loafer. The Centre
helped him financially to support his fees and thus continue studies. Venkatesh, rightly made
use of the opportunity and completed PUC with high marks. He thus became the second
beneficiary of the same family. Thus, once dejected Venkatesh has earned distinction in
studies.
PROPPING THE DESTITUTE
Kamakshi, a destitute with a brother and a sister, lost her father at an early age. The mother
of the three children eloped to leave them with none to care. The trio discontinued schooling
and were looking for someone to lend a helping hand, even for their sustenance. SKIP
identified these children who were put back to schools for studies and arranged for their stay
at Deena Seva Ashram, in the City. Kamakshi, completed her Degree course, Harisha, her

brother studying in II Year PUC and Manjula, her Sister completed her SSLC, with great
hopes only due to the propping by the Centre.
A SCHOOL DROPOUT CASTING BRICKS FOR CASTLES OF THE RICH
Kamale, rural lass, hailing from a highly impoverished family background lost her father during
her childhood. Mother not earning, Kamale did schooling only up to middle school. Having
heard of SKIP, Kamale with her mother came to the centre. The centre shouldered the
responsibility of her studies, put her back to school and is supporting the family for
sustenance and Kamale in her studies. Kamale is now studying in a local Government
School.
HAMMERING OUT DREAMS OF THE UNDERAGED
Amith Khan, one amongst twenty children of his minority parents, working in engineering
works, was never sent to school. Due to the intervention of the centre, Khans parents were
convinced of the need to hammer out the dreams of the underaged to study in School. The
boy is studying well hoping for a bright future like any other child.
A CHILD AT THE BRINK OF DISEASE
Kirana, a four year old child from an impoverished family of construction coolies playing with
the filth unaware of the communicable diseases that would be contacted, was rescued from
becoming a child labour and provided with logistic support for wholesome growth.
FEMALE CHILD COOKING A BROTH FOR THE BELLY
Parvathy, Nomadic tribe, had no opportunity to even dream of basic education as the nomadic
nature of the parents prevented her from settling in a single place. The child was identified
and put into a residential school where the girl child could dream of a future.
LIVING SHEEPISH WITH NO LITERACY
Thippe, a Shepherd boy with not an iota of interest in going to school was rehabilitated by the
centre and enthused to take up schooling.
DEBARKING FOR MEAGER RETURNS
Kantha, a rural unfortunate lad had to pass through difficult days in his childhood as he was
posted by his parents to cut firewood, which was yielding returns for family sustenance.
Engaged in cutting firewood, Kantha missed his studies and was a forced school dropout after
a brief schooling only up to sixth standard. For the centre it was one more opportunity to
bring a child back to mainstream by convincing his parents to send him back to school.

AN ADEPT MILL WRIGHT MECHANIC FROM ABODE OF HOOLIGANISM

Veeranagappa, a backward community youngster form Mylasandra, an abode of terror and
dungeon is a School dropout and was unemployed before he came to the centre, which
recognized his innate talents and thoroughly trained him on machining skills. Nagappa is
currently a millwright mechanic living with his small family of his wife and two daughters, who
attributes all his success to the Centre.
LANGUISHING LAD FROM AP VILLAGE WORKS ON LATHE FOR BETTER LIVELIHOOD
Bhaskar, a backward class school drop out teenager from rural AP infested with Naxalites
was at the crossroads when he came to the centre which provided him training on lathe.
Bhaskar got a job in a small-scale industry after acquiring technical skills and is eking out his
livelihood to support his family.
A TURNER TRAINEE IN A DRILLING EXERCISE DREAMING TO BE AN
ENTREPRENEUR
Chandrappa, a backward class unemployed Arts graduate from Yarab Nagar, a slum near
Kumara Swami Layout, had no hope in his life before he approached the Centre. The Centre
identified his skills and put him on a rigorous training program on lathe.
The twenty two year old Chandrappa is now an adept turner in an industry and is dreaming of
entrepreneurship in a small way.
ADOLESCENT SCHOOL DROPOUT FROM ADDICTED FAMILY ACQUIRING MACHINING
SKILLS
Mahadeva an SSLC dropout, from Patnagere bordering the Vrishabhavathi the polluted river,
lost interest in education; owing to lack of support from his family as his father is a daily wager
and an alcohol addict.
Seventeen year old adolescent Mahadeva was imparted machining and turning skills to
enable him fetch a job and support his family.
COBBLERS WAITING FOR CUSTOMERS IN DESPAIR
Marilinga and Siddaiah, traditional teenager cobblers from Gandhinagar, Ramanagaram
never had any schooling. Being sensitive to their plight the Centre financed them to get a
make shift shop for cobbling. The duo are now famous cobblers in Chanditextiles extension,
earning their livelihood with pride.

REHABILITATING AN OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDEE

Palani, an urban youngster ridden with Asthma, was working in foundry and Casting industry
and subjected to occupational hazard before he came across the Centre, which rehabilitated
him elsewhere in an alternative placement as instructor.
THE BOLD LASS NOW EMPLOYS OTHER TRAINEES IN SUCCESSFUL DTP VENTURE
Shanthamma, Physically handicapped but promising lass, hails from the urban slum of
Nayandanahalli. Born in a large family with five children, her parents could not afford to spend
for post matriculation as they work on daily wages. Twenty-two year old Shanthamma was
imparted training on DTP, Screen-Printing and Bookbinding. Now she owns a bookbinding
unit employing a few other fellow trainees.
ORPHAN BOY WORKING IN A UNIT OF GIRL ENTREPRENEUR
Paramesha, a twenty four year old rural youngster who has passed Pre-University is a
fatherless unemployed from Kempanahalli near Bangalore. He is highly impoverished and has
to bear the responsibility of the family as his mother is not working. The inopportune
Paramesh, after getting proper training on DTP and book binding at the Centre joined the
fellow trainee entrepreneur Shantha.
TEAM PENTAS SPIRITED SYNERGY GROUP OF PRINTERS AND BOOK BINDERS
The Synergy group of young entrepreneurs of five SC trainees, who were at cross roads with
no employment, now boasts of an efficiently run DTP and Book binding unit. The members of
the Team Pentas, who were the benefactors of the centre, are Prakash C, Hanumanthaiah,
Kiran Kumar, Mangesh, and Manjunath D. They are presently gainfully self-employed.
TRAINING FOR NORTH EAST TRIBES
Under the guidance and vision of Dr. S C Sharma, RVCE entered into a Memorandum of
Understanding with Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, Arunachal Pradesh (as Project Institution) to

WOMENS DEVELOPMENT
Background: Throughout Indian history, from the time of Sita, the consort of Lord Rama,
there have been women who have occupied a special place in society. Laxmibai, Razia
Sultan and Meerabai are names that now belong to history. From contemporary times,
women who have left their imprint include Mrs. Vijayalaxmi Pundit, the first woman president
of the United Nations, Mrs. Indira Gandhi and Mother Teresa, who was born in Albania but
won the Nobel Prize as an Indian missionary for spreading the message of love and peace
among the neglected. In the field of sports, many Indian women have won laurels in
international events.
The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble,
Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. The Constitution not only
grants equality to women, but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive
discrimination in favour of women.
Within the framework of a democratic polity, our laws, development policies, Plans and
programmes have aimed at womens advancement in different spheres. From the Fifth Five
Year Plan (1974-78) onwards, there has been a marked shift in the approach to womens
issues from welfare to development. In recent years, the empowerment of women has been
recognized as the central issue in determining the status of women. The National Commission
for Women was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1990 to safeguard the rights and legal
entitlements of women. The 73rd and 74th Amendments (1993) to the Constitution of India
have provided for reservation of seats in the local bodies of Panchayats and Municipalities for
women, laying a strong foundation for their participation in decision making at the local levels.
In spite of various initiatives by the successive governments in India, women are among the
most vulnerable and marginalized group in work arena. Almost two-fifths of the Indian
population lives below the poverty line. Most of these are women and their proportion is
increasing. With lower literacy rates than men, and limited access to skills and training,
women are less likely than men to find paid work. The vast majority of working women are in
the informal economy, characterized by work that is low-paid, with low status and little or no
security.
Women's wages, on an average, are at least one fourth less than men's. Women's
employment is becoming increasingly informal, across all sectors and most regions. Labour

laws are difficult to apply in the informal sector, especially when workers lack the ability to
organize themselves effectively. Very few women are members of trade unions and
associations, and even fewer hold decision-making positions.
Activities of Women development programme

Guidance for women students in obtaining PhD degree in science, machinery and
technology.

Guidance for women students in acquiring M.S, M.Sc, M.Tech, and post graduation
degrees.

Skill promotion programmes during leisure hours for the school dropouts, street
children, ex-convicts, those deprived of facilities, those devoid of social amenities and
the deaf and dumb girls.
