The Siberian herb, Rhodiola

rosea also known as Golden
Root or Artic Root has been
used for years in Europe and
North Asia to address issues
related to physical and mental stress, improving energy,
endurance and stamina. This
really is an adaptogen herb.
The ancient Chinese Emperors knew that Rhodiola
rosea gives a massive lift to
the body and mind and in a
Swedish study the effects
from this herb exerted an
anti-fatigue effect in stress
related fatigued patients as
well as increasing mental
performance, decreasing
stress hormones such as cortisol in the blood as well as

reducing over all stress responses. In another study

published in The Journal of
Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Rhodiola
rosea caused improvement in
patients with general anxiety disorder, and in another
study in depressed people in
Armenia this herb showed
significant improvement in
overall mood.
Over 300 studies on this
plant have been published
related to the effects on its
anti-stress, anti-anxiety and
the anti-depressant properties with no significant negative effects.

and herbal preparations, this

one reports to being palpable
and it is reported that when
one takes it, one feels it with
enhanced energy, improved
mood, greatly reduced stress,
better sleep and improved
sexual vitality. This can be
attributed to the novel
group of compounds in the
root known as rosavins.
Once again giving us an alternative to the massive
pharmaceutical preparations
with a large list of effects,
side effects and related negative experiences.

Pennsylvania Natural Health Care Freedom Coalition.

In this year of political insanity, we in Pennsylvania

the process of obtaining all
the legal registration and
documentation. This organization is the Pennsylvania
Natural Health Freedom

Coalition. This organization

Stinging Nettle.
With the warm weather of
spring upon us, a lot of old
school herbalists are out
looking for a couple of herbs
to use for not only a spring
time tonic, but as allpurpose healing herbs.
Stinging Nettle is just one of
the early greens that we see
proliferating the fence rows
and woodlands. This plant
has a fierce reputation for
the stingers that are a part
of it and hence the name
stinging, however, when
harvesting, wearing gloves
decreases this nasty experience. The fresh spring greens

are cooked and eaten as one

would consume most greens
and the dried leaves can be
consumed as a tonic or tea
for cleansing as this is a very
iron rich plant. In addition
to the mineral iron, this
plant is also rich in calcium,
chlorophyll, Vitamin C as
well as a host of other minerals and enzymes that help
support metabolic and biochemistry processes. This
plant has been used through
time for its gentle cleansing
action, reducing fatigue and
exhaustion, supporting
weight loss, ease depression

and mood swings, balance

blood sugar levels, alleviate
chronic skin conditions such
as eczema, promote healthy
hair growth, assist adrenal
function, decrease allergy
and hay fever symptoms,
decreasing menopausal
symptoms, strengthen the
kidneys and supporting a
healthy prostate.
For more information on
this plant and its uses, please
consult with this office, a
good herbal manual or a
wild foraging cookbook.

Time and Health Habits.

It is no measure of
health to be well
adjusted to a
profoundly sick
society. ~
Jiddu Krishnamurti.

The American Heart Association just released a report

indicating that only 12% of
adult Americans regularly
practice such healthy habits
as eating right, exercising
and brushing/flossing their
teeth. This report went on
to indicate that 80% of the
respondents struggled to eat
at least 9 servings of fruit
and vegetables per day and
60% found it difficult to
obtain at least 150 minutes a

week of moderate physical

activity such as brisk walking. In addition this report
indicated that at least 25%
of the people do not brush
their teeth at least twice a
day.
With this much negativity
being reported the positive
fact of this report was that
90% of those polled for this
paper indicated they wanted
to improve their health.

When we consider that 90%

of all health concerns are
environmentally or our own
creation, then we should
really consider looking in the
mirror to address these problems we have brought on to
our bodies. Starting today
to address your health with
an improved diet, decreased
stress load and healthier you
can be obtained with a consult in one of our offices. It
really is up to YOU!

Skull Cap.
There are over 200 different
species of skullcap and it
falls under the genus of Scutellaria. The most accepted
one being blue skull cap as
shown to the left. The traditional use of this herb is an
anxiolytic in the form of
teas, caps and tablets. The
extract of this herb has its
roots in the Native American tradition for a nerve

tonic, sedative and diuretic

properties. The plant also
has documentation for use as
an anti-inflammatory and
analgesic. This herb has
been used in combination
with other herbs such as
Mullen, Coltsfoot and Damiana to smoke for lung issues
as well as a replacement for
tobacco containing products.
Once again, this is a plant

that one will observe growing in the spring in moist

soil, along fence rows or
stone walled areas in the
fields and along the woodlands. Harvesting and drying this herb for use later in
the year is common among
herbalists. For more information on herbs and their
use, please consult with this
office or an herbalist.

Signs of Vitamin D deficiency.

In a previous newsletter it
was reported that we now
have the availability to test
the levels of Vitamin D in
the body using a simple finger stick that a person can
do in their home. To help
you have a better understanding of some of the
symptoms that are related
with a deficiency of this nutrient in the body, one needs
to know some of the signs
that they may be deficient.
Therefore, ask yourself if
you have:

The flu

Muscle weakness

Psoriasis

Chronic kidney disease

Diabetes

Asthma

Periodontal disease

Cardiovascular disease

Schizophrenia and or
Depression

Cancer.

If you can answer yes to any

of these, having your body
tested for a Vitamin D defi-

ciency may be a good idea.

Since Vitamin D acts more
as a hormone in metabolic
functions, the vast amount
of cell signaling, metabolic
processes and related is a
textbook in and of its self.
The amount of information
that is being published on
this one nutrient alone over
the past few years is not only overwhelming, but, more
of a reason to see exactly
what levels you are at and
what you should do to help
optimize your own health.

Why do the Amish Farm kids have lower Asthma and Allergies?
In a recently published report; Swiss Amish children
growing up on a farm have
less allergy/asthma and respiratory issues than others
and this may lead to the
hygiene hypothesis that
not only are we living in too
sterile of an environment but
the added environmental
and chemical toxins may in
fact be exacerbating the
breathing problems of todays youth.

One of the hypothesized reasons for the decrease of allergies and asthma among this
group of the population may
be linked to the consumption
of raw milk and raw dairy
products as well as the exposure to large farm animals
from an early age.
With this stated, the study
presented at the annual
meeting of the American
Academy of Allergy, Asth-

ma and Immunology the

beginning of March indicates
that the hygiene hypothesis
as a basis for a lot of the
Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, Sick Building Syndrome, Excitotoxins, Endotoxic disrupters and related
may in fact be behind the
massive increase of health
problems today in the children, especially repertory
related.

Mercury in Skin Cream.

Amazingly the first week of
March 2012 the USFDA
announced that they had
found 35 imported skin
creams, antiseptic soaps and
anti-aging lotions to have
measurable amounts of mercury in them. I reported on
this known problem in a
newsletter several years ago,
the Environmental Working
Group has been reporting on

this known problem for

years and yet, companies
continue to willfully, blatantly and intentionally add
known toxins and carcinogens to products. In the
FDA report it indicated that
some people had to be admitted to hospitals due to
the toxicity from these products.
Mercury is a known neuro-

toxin that can damage vision, hearing, the nervous

system, brain function,
cause tremors, numbness
and tingling in the extremities and memory issues. If
you are experiencing any
issues of mercury poisoning
please contact one of my
offices to find out about
heavy metal testing and detoxification procedures.

Antibiotics, Livestock and Super Bugs!

In recent years the number of articles appearing
in the main stream press
related to a bacteria outbreak in the food supply
has been increasing. A lot
of this press centers
around vegetables with ecoli, raw dairy with campo bacteria and related.
However, when one does
the back tracing to the
sources, a large percentage of the bacteria that is
antibiotic resistance are
being traced back to the
farms and the manure.
The reason for this is in
direct par portion to the
amount of preventative
antibiotics that the factory farming industry is
using today. In turn this

is leading to antimicrobial
resistance in humans and
more cases of superbugs.
In a recent publication
from the American Society of Microbiology, they
showed how an antibiotic
susceptible staph germ
passed from a human to a
pig, where it became resistant to the antibiotics
tetracycline and methicillin. And then the antibiotic resistant staph
learned to jump back into
humans. This strain
known as ST398 has been
found in retail meat at
conventional supermarkets in America.
Antibiotic resistance is a
natural process that is a
consequences of using

routine antibiotics on the

farm and in particular,
factory farms.
There are several ways of
decreasing your exposure
to these super bugs and
that is to know your
source of meat and or
have a working relationship with a good local
source of meats, avoid nono foods and avoid conventionally or factory
farm raised livestock. If
one contracts a super bug,
several options of eliminating this from the body
are available, however,
the cost of avoiding them
in the first place is a better option.
