Demographics halls readings how different audiences perceived my video

My first objective was to choose a range of demographic and see how each person would react to my music video. Subject A was an Adult aged 30, Subject B was a mixed group of 18 year olds which contained different races, religions and genders. Lastly Subject C was a group of early teens aged 15-16. After showing Subject A my music video and asked what they thought, it was clear that due to the genre of the music and the video, my work did not appeal to the adult. Although they agreed that the shot types and camera work was used critically and also agreed that I met the codes and conventions of what a rap video should be, they argued that the video was too explicit with the use of drugs and alcohol and an alternative video would have to be made to be shown on TV music channels before the watershed. Subject B who was mixed races and religions aged 18 all agreed to that the codes and conventions were met for rap video but agreed that the use of a white rapper also deters away from the typical culture of rap and the representation of the black race within the music video appeals to the typical stereotypes of the rap genre culture. They also agreed that the use of drugs and alcohol being presented during the extreme close up shots connotes what the rap culture is about and the urban decay. Lastly Subject C which was also a mixed group of 15 year olds had a less mature approach to the video, in which they did not understand the concept but knew what the genre of the video was and also agreed that the video appeals to the codes and conventions of that. This primary research taught me that I achieved my aim of meeting the codes and conventions of the rap genre music video and that I also appealed to my psychographic and demographic profiles of teenagers between 18-23 who would generally listen to rap music. Whilst the primary research made me realise how I achieved my goal, you have to consider the Hawthorne theory and how people behave differently when under pressure, especially from the director of the music video who put the piece of work together. Furthermore although this data was helpful it was qualitative data which means I could not pull any real statistics from these responses. This meant that I turned to surveys to be able to get quantative data which I could get clear statistics from. Using this I asked questions such as: Do you think my music video appeals to the codes and conventions of a rap genre? Would you watch the video again? Do you think the video has a narrative? Is the video synchronous with the song? 90% of the people I asked agreed that my music video did appeal to the codes and conventions of a rap music video which also reinforces the previous subjects I asked in the focus group presentation. 75% of the people also agreed the video somewhat has a narrative which is synchronous with the lyrics of the song which made them enjoy the video.
