Shannon Estuary (South)

1.

BALLINGARRY: Park at end of road and walk 300 yards to point. Spinning for pollack and mackerel and float
fishing for wrasse. Bottom fishing for conger. High water best.

2.

KYLEMORE STRAND: Car park at southern end of strand. Surf and beach fishing for bass and flounder at
northern end near channel.

3.

CASHEN ESTUARY: Bottom fishing below car park for numerous flounder and occasional bass. Best bait crab.
Low water through to high water.

4.

BALLYBUNNION BEACH: Beach and surf fishing on northern side of Cashen Estuary for bass and flounder.
Flooding tide best.

5.

BEAL POINT: Bottom fishing inside the point for dogfish, flounder and dabs.

6.

LITTOR STRAND: Bottom fishing for dogfish, bull huss and flatfish.

7.

CARRIG ISLAND (WEST): Bottom fishing from rocky platforms for numerous dogfish, also bull huss and small
ballan wrasse.

CARRIG ISLAND (EAST): Park at end of road and track which runs onto beach. Bottom fishing on outer point
for dogfish, bull huss, ballan wrasse and possible tope. Flooding tide to high water best.

9.

CARRIG ISLAND (SOUTH EAST): Cross the bridge and turn right and drive for 200 yards. Follow track through
fields till you come to the south east point of island. Bottom fishing in muddy channel for bull huss, thornback
ray, dogfish and flounder. Can fish at all stages of the tide.

10. SALEEN QUAY: Good bottom fishing for flounder from quay. Crab bait essential and fish the flooding tide.

BACK OF THE HILL: Bottom fishing from stony beach on to clean patchy ground for dogfish, wrasse and
flatfish. Low water to half flood best. Conger at night. Bass and mullet at hot water outlet from power station.

12. TARBERT PIER: Inner pier fishes best on flooding tide and high water for flounder, dabs, plaice and dogfsh.
Small conger at night.
13. GLIN PIER: Bottom fishing from pier for small conger, dogfish, flatfish and whiting. End of pier blocked off, so
must fish each side. Flooding tide and high water best.
14. KILTEERY PIER: Bottom fishing from pier for thornback ray, flounder, dabs, plaice, bull huss and dogfish.
Conger and occasional smooth hounds at night. Flooding tide to high water best.
15. FOYNES: Bottom fishing on beach below swimming pool into deep channel for thornback ray, dogfish and
codling. Small conger at night. Crab best bait. Flooding tide to high water.
16. FOYNES PIERS: Bottom fishing from piers for conger, thornback ray, bull huss, codling, whiting and flounder.
Best baits crab, lugworm and mackerel. Flooding tide to high water best.
BAIT
A. CASHEN ESTUARY (SOUTH): Lugworm plentiful on beach near pier.
B. CASHEN ESTUARY (NORTH): Soft and peeler crab can be collected under the weed on north side of estuary.
Some lugworm here also.
C. CARRIG ISLAND: Lugworm in sandy/muddy patches near track on west side of island. Some peeler crab can
be collected here.
D. SALEEN PIER: Soft and peeler crab plentiful on weedy beach inside the pier.
E. TARBERT: Soft and peeler crab plentiful under weed beside the road 400 yards from Tarbert pier. Some
lugworm here also.

FOYNES: Some soft and peeler crab can be collected on the beach west of the swimming pool at low water.
