Lesson
Summary:

Children will be introduced to the different senses we have as humans.

Children will then be explained senses of smell, touch, hearing, sight
and taste. Children will be challenged to various different activities
where they will have a chance to be engaged and collaborate by
working in groups. With each one of the senses they will be exposed to
various experiments where they use their prior knowledge and enhance
their cognitive skills. Each day children will use either electronic devices
or in class props that will become available to them.

Estimated
Duration:

In this lesson I plan on dividing the five senses to one per day. Due to
the age group I will limit the maximum time allowed to a half hour.

Ex: Mon- Touch, Tues-Taste, Wed-Smell, Thurs-Sight, Fri-Hearing.

Each one of these daily lessons will be approximately 20-30 minutes
per day. Mon- Will be 30 mins in length plus lesson time. Tues -Thurs
will only be 20 mins in length, on Friday the lesson will be 30 minutes,
which will allow us to reflect on what was learned throughout the week
This lesson will have a total of 120 hours.

Preparation of
materials and
environment

What preparation is needed? Teacher will gather all required documentation to

find out if any child is allergic to anything that they could potentially be exposed
to. Teacher will have materials and overhead ready to go prior to start of the
lesson. As needed for the daily lesson-the paint will be laid out on top of a
table right next to the sink. Children will be required to wash their hands
before and after each lesson, and as needed.
What materials will be used? Children will have some props such as paint,
sand, dry leaves and fresh leaves, a piece of silk material as well as piece of
cotton material clothing. Small pieces of fresh pineapple, apples, celery as well
as raisins. Teacher will use a projector to explain the sight portion of the
lesson. Teacher will also have a tablet when exposing children to different
sounds. For smell there will be candles with at least three different senses,
grass and rocks from outside as well as play dough.
How will the learning environment be set up? Children will be seated on the
floor and/or on the tables depending on the activity of the day. Ex: if children
are required to learn about the sense of taste, they will be seated in their seats
(after washing their hands) to explore/learn about this sense.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1: Gather children in a circle. Explain to children what society considers the five
senses. Explain that the five senses are there to help us thru daily activities and can
make learning more fun and engaging. Expose them to the vocabulary of smell, touch,
feel, and sight. Ask children to sing along to the song titled Five Senses (Tune: Where
is Thumbkin)
During the singing of the song I will point to different body parts that corresponds to each
sense. This song will play from an ipad device.
Five senses, five senses
We have them. We have them.

Seeing, hearing, touching,

Tasting and smelling.
There are five. There are five.
Let children know that today they will be learning about the sense of touch. Explain to
them that for this lesson we will use our hands and fingers.
Ask children to pay attention and remember how different one may feel in their hands vs
the other. For example is one softer than the other, is one dry and other wet, etc.
Remaining seated in the circle children will be exposed to various items and textures one
item at a time. First children will first be exposed to silk material(clothing), followed by
cotton material (clothing), fresh and dry leafs, then sand and followed by paint. After
children feel the different materials, and items in their hands, they will walk to the sink
and wash their hands. Gather back into circle allow children to use their cognitive skills to
recall the items they touched. Ask questions and talk about the different ways things felt
when they touched the materials with their hands and fingers, followed by the leafs, then
sand and paint. Allow children to ask any questions they may have. After children are
done with these exercises they will wash their hands and proceed with next activity.
Day 2:
Ask children if they can recall the sense they learned yesterday. Follow by letting children
know that today they will be learning about the sense of hearing. Explain to them that for
this sense we use our ears. Start out by singing same song from Monday- this will allow
them to refresh their memory on what senses correspond with each body part.
The activity for this day will use an ipad which will make different animal noises, asking
children to carefully listen and identify the sound. Sounds will be as easy as dog barking,
cat meowing, cow mooing, etc. The sounds will change to sounds of music, child
laughing, child talking, screaming, etc. With each answer given by children there will be a
picture which will be displayed via powerpoint thru a projector, this way children can
make the connections that correspond to that sound. Allow children to ask any questions
they may have. After children are done with these exercises they will wash their hands
and proceed with next activity.

Day 3:
Once more children will be asked to try and remember the two senses learned on
Monday and Tuesday. Once they do so, introduce them to the sense of smell. Sing song
from Monday. Explain to them that for this sense we use our nose. Gather children in
circle and sit on floor. This lesson will expose children to various smells. There will be
three different kinds of candles (pumpkin, cotton candy, chocolate). Items will be passed
around. Other items available to children to smell will be grass, rocks and play dough.
Each children will describe and explain the different smells as well as maybe tell us a
place where they might be exposed to these smells. Ask children if there is a place they
have been to where they might have already smelled this, for a few minutes allow them
to share an experience of their own with a certain smell, even one not shared in class
today. Allow children to ask any questions they may have. After children are done with

these exercises they will wash their hands and proceed with next activity.
Day 4:
Allow children once more to reflect and ask them to name the senses they have learned.
Sing song from Monday. Expose them to the sense of sight. Let children know this
sense uses their eyes. Ask children to look around them and ask them what they see
and to describe and if they know what the object is to name it. Teacher will ask children
questions about the descriptions they are seeing. Read children a made up short story
book which will say i see a small..square, that square is the color green, that square is
on top of the bed, the bed is inside the house, the house is (allow children to make
something up, use their imagination). Allow children to ask any questions they may have.
After children are done with these exercises they will wash their hands and proceed with
next activity.
Day 5:
Ask children to name the four senses they have learned this week and if they can guess
which one is missing. Once children do so tell them the sense we will be using today is
going to be taste. Ask children if they can guess what body part uses the taste sense.
After they have guessed it, let them know that taste sense in fact does require your
mouth. Explain that our tongues allow us to experience different taste.have children wash
their hands. Children will be served a small amount of each fruit on a plate with.
Assuming that all possible allergies have been communicated to the teacher, proceed
with this lesson by allowing children to taste different fruits such as; pineapple, apples,
celery and raisins. Children will have the option to choose and/or deny to taste any of the
samples. Children will compare, explain the taste and texture of the fruit they tasted.
After this is done they will briefly do a K W L (Know, Wonder, Learned) chart -Teacher will
use google drawings where she will write down the answers that children blur out.
Teacher will make a KWL chart for each sense.

Extension
Parents and teachers can benefit from this website to gather an idea of where a child of
a certain age be in terms of their developmental stage. This can help both teachers and
parents provide children with more age appropriate lesson plan and activities at home.

Differentiated Instructional Support:

A challenge gifted students may face might be providing them with a matching game
using all five senses corresponding to each body part and match it to the appropriate
photo. For example. On left column display picture of nose, ear, eye, hand, mouth, and
on right column display picture of a ringing bell, gloves, orange, glasses, and flower. If
there is more than one gifted student, they will have choice to work together or by
themselves.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be
struggling with the material:
A child who may be struggling with the material will be asked what they know about each
sense, teacher will take note on what the child may say. Allow child to ask any questions.
Ask child to show or demonstrate something they may need to use their five senses body
parts for, such as ears, mouth, hands, etc.

Vocabulary: touch, hear, smell, sight, pineapple, raisins, senses.

For teachers

Projectors, ipads, computer, short stories/books and music.

For students

Props- Paint, leaves, as well as cloth materials, candles, rocks, grass,

playdough.
Foods- Pineapple, apples, raisins, and celery.
Ipads to do matching games in the event child is gifted and is in need of a
challenge to avoid boredom.
