Dear friends:
El Papa Francisco ha cautivado al mundo con su sonrisa y con

su manera sencilla de hablar de Dios, del ser humano y de la
creacin entera. Su primer gesto como papa fue de humildad
y ternura, pidindole al pueblo su bendicin, antes de darla l.
Desde entonces, uno de sus temas ms comunes ha sido la ternura. En una de sus homilas nos propuso dejarnos amar con
ternura por el Seor.
Pero cmo podemos reconocer la ternura del amor de Dios?
En qu momento la sentimos? Dnde podemos encontrarla?
Las Sagradas Escrituras son como una carta de amor de Dios
a su pueblo. Los sacramentos mismos son como tiernos besos
que Dios nos da. La liturgia dominical est repleta de ternura
en cada rito en la msica, en las lecturas, en los gestos del
rito de Comunin, en el saludo de la paz, en la oracin de los
fieles. Todos estos momentos son oportunidades privilegiadas
para dejarnos amar con ternura por el Seor y para expresar la
ternura de nuestro amor a Dios y a los dems.
Escribo estas lneas en camino a un evento en donde estar
presente el Papa Francisco. Tendr la dicha de verlo y escucharlo desde cerca. Quizs pase muy cerca de m y hasta me dirija
unas palabras. Quizs me haga sentir que me conoce por nombre y me busca entre la multitud a m personalmente. Y qu
decir de Cristo, de Aquel que est siempre conmigo y me conoce ms que nadie? Jess se queda conmigo, se queda con su
Iglesia, se queda en la Eucarista, se queda en los empobrecidos
como pastor cercano que huele a oveja porque con ellas anda,
pastorendonos.
El tiempo de Cuaresma y Pascua es especialmente bueno
para sentir la ternura de Dios. Es mi oracin que la misa y los
materiales que ofrecemos en este nmero les ayuden a recibir
y dar con ternura el amor de Dios en sus familias, en su comunidad de fe y en el ministerio que desempean.
Pope Francis has charmed the world with his smile and
his simple ways of talking about God, human nature,
and creation. His first public act as pope was a gesture
of humility and tenderness as he asked the faithful for
their blessing upon him before giving his own blessing
to the faithful. Since that moment, one of Pope Francis
common themes has been tenderness. During one of
his homilies, he proposed that we allow ourselves to
be loved by the Lord with tenderness.
But how can we recognize the tenderness of Gods
love? At what moment do we feel it? Where can we find it?
The Sacred Scriptures are like a love letter from God
to his people. The sacraments themselves are like tender
kisses we receive from God. The Sunday liturgy is filled
with tenderness in each ritein the music, in the readings,
in the action during the Communion rite, during the sign of
peace, in the prayers of the faithful. All these moments are
privileged opportunities in which we allow ourselves to be
loved tenderly by God and can then express the tenderness of our love to God and to one another.
I write these lines on my way to an event where Pope
Francis will be present. I will have the joy of seeing him
and listening to him up close. Maybe he will pass by my
side and speak to me personally. Maybe I will feel as if he
knows me by name and that he will look for me among
the crowds to greet me. And what about Christ, the one
who is always with me and knows me better than anyone
else? The Lord Jesus walks by my side; he is present in
the Eucharist and he stays with us like a loving shepherd
that smells like the sheep because, after all, he walks
with us, guiding us and watching over us.
The season of Lent and Easter is a particularly good
time to experience Gods tender love for us. It is my
prayer that the articles and suggestions in this issue will
help you receive and give Gods love with tenderness in
your family, in your faith community, during the Sunday
liturgy, and every day of the week.

Reflection
La Cuaresma llega cada ao, dndonos la oportunidad de

acercarnos ms a Dios, a los dems y a la esencia de nuestro
propio ser. La Iglesia nos propone vivir con una espiritualidad capaz de cambiar al mundo. La espiritualidad no es un
disfraz que vamos a usar durante estos cuarenta das, sino
una manera de ser que adoptaremos en el cuerpo y en el
espritu. Esta manera debe ser honesta y sin fingimiento.
Ms que una actitud exterior, Dios nos pide una actitud
interior. Nos advierte de la tentacin de ser hipcritas,
de mostrarnos ante los dems como buenos y justos, alimentando nuestro propio ego, en lugar de fortalecer el
espritu.
Tres cosas se nos propone que vivamos esta Cuaresma:
oracin, ayuno y limosna. Comienzo por la ltima. Dar
limosna no significa dar lo que no te sirve o los centavitos
que traes. La limosna no es lo que no me sirve, sino dar de
lo que me sirve, de lo que necesito para vivir, porque as
estoy compartiendo mi don y necesidad con los menos afortunados. La limosna es una corresponsabilidad econmica
de la vida del pobre, de quien te pide en la esquina para su
autobs, de quien necesita ropa o de quien simplemente no
ha comido a lo largo del da.
La limosna tambin es una actitud moral. Es dar ropa,
limpia y en buen estado, a un centro de ayuda, a la sociedad de San Vicente de Paul o a tu misma parroquia. La
limosna es llevarle alimentos a un enfermo que vive solo.
Es compartir tu tiempo con una persona que est presa, no
porque sea ms mala que t, sino porque no se le han dado
las mismas oportunidades que a ti se te dieron. La limosna
no es para que te hagas pobre, sino para que el pobre viva
como t.
The season of Lent comes every year, giving us the

opportunity to draw closer to God and those around us
and discover who we are in the essence of our being. The
Church suggests that we live with a spirituality capable
of changing the world. This spirituality should not be a
disguise that we put on during these forty days but rather
a way of being that we adopt in body and spirit. This way
of being should be honest, without pretense. More than
an outward attitude, God requires inner change. We are
warned of the temptation to be hypocritical, of portraying
ourselves to others as good in order to boost our ego
instead of strengthening our spirit.
During Lent we are encouraged to abide by the three
traditional Lenten practices: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Lets start with the latter of the three. Almsgiving
does not mean giving of what we dont need or the loose
change we find in our pockets. When we give, we should
be giving from our necessities, from what we need to live.
In this way, we share our gifts and our necessities with the
less fortunate. Giving alms is a way to connect with the
poor, with those who struggle every day in search of bus
fare or warm clothes or a hot meal.
Almsgiving is more than simply giving money; it is a
way of being. It is donating clean, used clothing to a
donation center, the local Saint Vincent de Paul society,
or your own parish. It is bringing a meal to someone who
is sick and living alone. It is sharing your time with someone who is imprisoned, not because youre better than
he or she is, but because maybe that person hasnt had
the same opportunities as you. We dont give in order to
become poor; we give so that the poor might live like us.

El Evangelio segn san Lucas comienza con una afirmacin contundente: Al principio exista la Palabra y la
Palabra estaba junto a Dios y la Palabra era Dios (Juan
1, 1) y la Palabra se hizo carne y habit entre nosotros
(Juan 1, 14). La Palabra, el Verbo del cual habla el evangelista es nuestro Seor Jesucristo, quien se encarn en
Mara Santsima por el poder del Espritu Santo y habit
en la tierra entre nosotros, a fin de darnos la salvacin.
Jesucristo es la Palabra de Dios hecha hombre en quien
se cumplen todas las promesas salvficas de Dios en el
Antiguo Testamento, en quien se basa por inspiracin de
Dios todo el Nuevo Testamento y el que protagoniza la
Palabra en los evangelios.
La Sagrada Escritura contenida en la Biblia es la
Palabra de Dios inspirada por el Espritu Santo. En ella
Dios se revela a la humanidad y manifiesta su plan creador, de salvacin, liberacin, sanacin y bendicin para
nosotros. Es un plan donde Dios, quien es el amor mismo,
manifiesta en cada palabra su propia esencia y verdad.
Nos revela cmo es el amor y nos comunica el llamado
que nos ha hecho a todos los seres humanos, el llamado a

God, is based; he is the protagonist of the word in the
Gospels.
The sacred Scripture contained in the Bible is the
word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit. In it, God
reveals himself to humanity and manifests his creative
plan of salvation, liberation, healing, and blessing.
It is a plan through which God, who is love itself,
manifests his very essence and truth in every word. He
reveals how to love and communicates the call he has
inscribed in every human being, the call to the vocation
of love.
Then we may say that, in a way, the word contained
in the Bible is God himself, and those that hold and
read it find themselves in the presence of God, listening
to him describe himself and reveal his plan of receiving
and sharing his love. That is, whoever reads the word

John Paul II said in a homily in Australia in 2001 during
the Conference on the Family and Integration of the
Disabled, when the families are nourished abundantly
by the word of God, miracles of authentic Christian
solidarity are produced within it.
Gather with your family to read, meditate upon, and
pray the word; listen to it in the liturgy; sing it in songs;
and make these activities a healthy family tradition. And
God will grant you the light to understand his message,
the wisdom to make sound decisions for your family,
the strength to confront and overcome your trials, and
the love to form a truly joy-filled family.

TITLE
The term title is used for the name of a psalm, much the
same way that we use the term nowadays for a book or
movie.
As related to the psalms, the titles are brief phrases,
which in our prayer books appear in red before each
psalm and explain its meaning and its human value for
the life of faith (General Instruction of the Liturgy of the
Hours [GILH] 111). The Jewish psalter already included
titles before each psalm. The ones we have at present
come from the Latin edition of the Neo-vulgate commissioned by Paul VI, and they point out the specific
meaning, original and literal, of the psalm and the circumstances under which the psalms were written: song of
lamentation, prayer of a sick person, song of pilgrimage
to the temple, happiness of the just man, praise for Gods
majesty, and so on.
These titles are not intended to be read aloud, but are
rather intended only as an aid in prayer (GILH 111). But
it is a good habit to leave a short moment of silence so
that individuals may become aware, in reading them, of
the type and tone of the psalm that is about to be prayed.
As an alternative, the title could be included in the commentary given before the psalm, if there is one.
Sometimes the term Christian titles is used to refer
to the phrases or sentences that precede the psalms
taken from the New Testament or from the Holy Fathers.
The term title is also used to refer to the phrase (in red)
that appears in the Lectionary between the incipit and the
text of a reading (cf. Introduction to the Lectionary 123),
summarizing its contents or pointing out the main idea.
The titular or name saint of a church or of an altar is the
saint to which the church or altar is dedicated. Each community celebrates as a solemnity the feast of the name
saint of its church.
TOUCH
The term touch comes from the Latin tangere, to establish contact. In the liturgy, together with other corporal

A veces se llama ttulos cristianos a las frases o sentencias que preceden a los salmos, tomadas del Nuevo
Testamento o de los Santos Padres.
Tambin se llama ttulo a la frase (en rojo) que se pone
en los leccionarios entre el incipit y el texto de una lectura
(cfr. Ordenacin de las Lecturas de la Misa 123), resumiendo su contenido o destacando su idea fundamental.
El titular de una iglesia o de un altar es el santo al que
est dedicada la iglesia o el altar. Cada comunidad celebra con
categora de solemnidad la fiesta del santo titular de su iglesia.

TOCAR
Tocar, tacto vienen del latn tangere, establecer contacto.
En la liturgia, junto con los otros sentidos corporales que se
ponen en funcionamiento, tambin el lenguaje de tocar
tiene con frecuencia un sentido eficaz para expresar el misterio que celebramos:
En el bautismo hacemos la signacin sobre la frente
de los bautizados o les ungimos en el pecho, les
imponemos la mano sobre la cabeza, los sumergimos en agua, volvemos a ungirlos en la cabeza; en
la oracin de bendicin del agua el sacerdote toca el
agua con la mano derecha.
En la confirmacin, adems de la imposicin de
manos, se unge a los confirmados sobre la frente con
crisma; el que los presenta al obispo coloca su mano
derecha sobre el hombro de cada uno, y al final el
obispo les da, como gesto de paz, un abrazo o un beso.
En la Eucarista el ministro besa el altar, toca con su
mano y luego besa el libro del Evangelio; los fieles
son invitados a comer y beber el Cuerpo y Sangre del
Seor; el que quiere puede recibir el pan muy dignamente en su mano. Antes de ir a comulgar nos damos
la mano o el abrazo de paz.
En el sacramento de la penitencia se ha restituido
como gesto simblico central de la reconciliacin
la imposicin de las manos sobre la cabeza del
penitente.
En la uncin el ministro unge con los leos la frente
y las manos del enfermo.
En las ordenaciones, adems de la uncin de las
manos, los candidatos sienten sobre su cabeza las
manos del obispo y de los sacerdotes concelebrantes.
En el matrimonio los nuevos esposos se dan el
mutuo s mientras se toman de las manos, se ponen
mutuamente el anillo en el dedo, y asimismo se dan
el abrazo o el beso de paz.
La importancia de tocar se deriva sencillamente de la
naturaleza corprea de la persona humana, que expresa y
entiende as mucho mejor el lenguaje interior de los sentimientos. Es como Jess, que ofreca la salvacin de Dios,
no slo con palabras, sino con el gesto del contacto corporal: bendeca y abrazaba a los nios, curaba a los enfermos
muchas veces tocndolos con su mano (como el caso de la
suegra de Pedro o la hija del jefe de la sinagoga) o los odos
y la boca (sordomudo): la mano de Cristo que toca es el
smbolo de la mano poderosa de Dios que se acerca y acta,
protegiendo y comunicando su salvacin.
TRACTo
Se llamaba psalmus tractus, o sea, salmo arrastrado, dicho
de un trazo, al canto que en tiempo de Cuaresma sustitua al

those being baptized (or we anoint them on the
chest); we place our hand on their head; we submerge or bathe them in water; we again anoint them

the water, the priest touches the water with his hand.
At confirmation, in addition to the imposition of
hands, the confirmed are anointed on the forehead
with the chrism; the person presenting them to the
bishop places his/her right hand on the shoulder of
each one; and at the end the bishop gives them, as
a sign of peace, an embrace or a kiss.
In the Eucharist the minister kisses the altar; he
touches with his hand and later kisses the Book of
the Gospels; the faithful are invited to eat and drink
the body and blood of the Lord; anyone who wishes
may receive the sacred bread into his/her hands
with dignity; and before going to Communion, we
shake hands or embrace as the sign of peace.
In the sacrament of penance the imposition of
hands on the head of the penitent has become a
central gesture symbolic of reconciliation.
At the anointing of the sick, the minister anoints the
forehead and hands of the sick person with holy oils.
At ordinations, in addition to the anointing of hands,
the bishop and the concelebrating priests place
their hands on the candidates heads.
At marriages, the newlyweds give their mutual yes
while they are holding hands; they put the rings on
each others finger; and they likewise give each
other the embrace or kiss of peace.
The importance of touch comes from the physical
nature of the human person, who, through touch, better expresses and understands the interior language of
feelings. It is like Jesus who offered Gods salvation not
only with words but also with human contact: he blessed
and embraced the children; he often cured the sick by
touching them with his hand (Peters mother-in-law or the
daughter of the head of the synagogue) or touching their
ears or mouth (the deaf mute). Christs touching hand is
the symbol of the powerful hand of God that approaches
and acts, protecting and communicating his salvation.
TRACT
The term psalmus tractus (that is, the psalm carried along,
said quickly) was used to refer to the hymn that replaced

the alleluia sung before the Gospel during Lent. They were
a series of verses from a psalm sung by the soloist or
choir without the participation of the community.
At present, it has been replaced by the verse before
the Gospel, to which, when the alleluia is sung, it can be
added, with the alleluia repeated afterwards. During Lent,
it is sung without the alleluia, and then the missal calls it
the verse before the Gospel.
EASTER TRIDUUM
Since Christ accomplished his work of human redemption and of the perfect glorification of God principally
through his Paschal Mystery [] the sacred Paschal
Triduum of the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord
shines forth as the high point of the entire liturgical year.
Therefore the pre-eminence that Sunday has in the week,
the Solemnity of Easter has in the liturgical year (Universal
Norms on the Liturgical Year and the General Roman
Calendar [UNLY] 18).
During the earliest centuries, when the Eastern tradition of celebrating Easter on the 14th of Nisan and the
Roman on the following Sunday was established, people
started preparing for the celebration of Easter Sunday
with two days of fasting on Friday and Saturday, giving
origin to the Paschal Triduum of which writers of the
third century already give account. In the fourth century,
what Saint Augustin calls the Passover of Christdead,
buried, and risen, an understanding of the Paschal mystery as a unit had already spread everywhere and was
considered traditional.
The three days of the Triduum are to be celebrated
as one day. On Friday and Saturday, the Eucharist is
not celebrated (they are a-liturgical days) until, with
the Vigil, the celebration of the third and definitive day
begins. In addition, On Friday of the Passion of the Lord
and, if appropriate, also on Holy Saturday until the Easter
Vigil, the sacred Paschal Fast is everywhere observed
(UNLY 20).
The word triduum means three days and also has
other applications in Christian life outside the liturgy: for
example the triduum of devotional preparation for a
feast, or the celebration during the three Ember days
around the fifth of October in Spanish communities.

de este domingo de Pascua con dos das de ayuno el viernes
y el sbado, dando as origen al Triduo pascual, del que
ya dan testimonio escritores del siglo III. En el siglo IV
ya es universal y considerado como tradicional lo que san
Agustn llama Pascua de Cristo muerto, sepultado y resucitado, entendiendo como unitario el misterio de la Pascua.
Los tres das del Triduo se celebran como un nico da:
el Viernes y el Sbado no se celebra la Eucarista (son das
alitrgicos), hasta que con la Vigilia se empieza ya la celebracin del da tercero y definitivo. Adems, el Viernes
Santo de la Pasin del Seor y, segn la oportunidad,
tambin el Sbado Santo hasta la Vigilia pascual, en todas

La palabra triduo significa tres das, y por tanto

Al elegir los cantos que acompaan los diferentes momentos
de la misa, es necesario aplicar el principio de la solemnidad
progresiva; esto implica tener presente no slo la dinmica
de los ritos, sino tambin la dinmica del propio ao litrgico. Las Normas Universales sobre el Ao Litrgico y sobre
el Calendario nos comunican que el Triduo pascual es el
punto culminante de todo el ao litrgico, y hacen una
comparacin con la preeminencia que tiene el domingo en
la semana (18). La Carta Circular sobre la Preparacin y
Celebracin de las Fiestas Pascuales nos comunica que el
centro culminante de todo el ao litrgico resplandece en el
santo Triduo pascual (2). Conviene, entonces, estudiar bien
los textos y las rbricas del Misal Romano para seleccionar
apropiadamente los cantos que formarn el repertorio de
los das ms solemnes del ao. Con respecto a los textos, el
mismo documento enfatiza que adquieren toda su fuerza
precisamente cuando son cantados (42).
Jueves Santo
Para darnos a conocer la importancia del inicio del Triduo
Pascual, la rbrica para el Jueves Santo, Misa vespertina de
la Cena del Seor, hace hincapi en que esta misa se celebra
con la participacin de toda la comunidad local y con la
intervencinde todos los sacerdotes y ministros. La antfona de entrada muestra el impacto que debe tener el canto
de entrada: Que nuestro nico orgullo sea la cruz de nuestro
Seor Jesucristo, porque en l tenemos la salvacin, la vida
y la resurreccin, y por l hemos sido salvados y redimidos
(cfr Glatas 6, 14). Les recomiendo que utilicen este texto
como canto de entrada para darle al Triduo el enfoque que
merece y permitirnos entrar en los misterios que la Iglesia
celebra durante estos tres das. Lourdes Montgomery nos

music that will accompany the various moments of the
Mass implies not only an awareness of the dynamic
aspect of the rites but also the dynamic of the entire liturgical year. The document Universal Norms for the Liturgical
Year and the General Roman Calendar states that the
Easter Triduum is the high point of the entire liturgical
year (18). It also notes that the Triduum has the kind of
pre-eminence in the liturgical year that Sunday has in the
week (18). The Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation
and Celebration of the Easter Feasts tells us that the
summit of the whole liturgical year is in the sacred Easter
Triduum (2). It would be of the utmost importance, then,
to study well the texts and rubrics from the Roman Missal
to be better able to select the songs that form the repertoire for these most solemn days of the year. Regarding
the singing of the texts, the same document instructs that
they are more effective when sung (42).
Holy Thursday
To give us a sense of the importance of the beginning of
the Easter Triduum, the rubric for Holy Thursdays Mass
Thursday of the Lords Supperstates that this Mass is
celebrated with the full participation of the whole local community and with all the Priests and ministers exercising their
office. Tonights entrance antiphon contains powerful words
that we would do well to utilize in the opening song: We
should glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom
is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are
saved and delivered (cf. Galatians 6:14). Using this text gives
the Triduum the distinction it deserves and allows us to enter
into the mysteries that the Church celebrates these three
days. Lourdes Montgomery presents us with a very useful
arrangement of this antiphon, Que Nuestro nico Orgullo
(Flor y Canto 3 [FC3] 337; ocp.org/compositions/66064), as
does Bob Hurd with his bilingual composition, Que Nuestro

nico Orgullo/We Should Glory (FC3 336; ocp.org/compositions/67042). Both songs capture the essence of the
principle of progressive solemnity. During the singing of the
Gloria, which has not been heard throughout the Sundays
of Lent, the rubrics indicate that bells are to be rung, underlining, once again, the importance of this great celebration.
After the homily the washing of the feet takes place. The
Roman Missal provides a variety of antiphon options to
accompany this special rite. The rubrics also indicate that
other appropriate chants may be used. In selecting a
song, we should keep in mind the sentiment presented to

the text of all six antiphons as verses (FC3 339; ocp.org/
compositions/67043). During the presentation of the gifts,
it is recommended that the faithful process with gifts for the
poor while the Ubi Caritas or another appropriate song is
sung to accompany the procession.
Keep in mind that the rubrics regarding the transfer
of the Most Blessed Sacrament indicate not only what
happens, but the necessary ministers, the actions of the
rite, what is to be sung, and the manner in which it is to
be sung. Canta Lengua Jubilosa/Pange Lingua Gloriosa
(FC3 331; ocp.org/compositions/7471), a thirteenthcentury hymn composed by Saint Thomas Aquinas, is
the indicated text for adoration and for accompanying
the procession of the transfer. Furthermore, the final two
verses (Tantum ergo) are not to be sung until the
Blessed Sacrament is being incensed. Carefully studying the text and melody will give us a better sense of the
spirit of adoration proposed during this moment and help
us understand it in the context of the celebration of Holy
Thursday. The rubric then proposes a moment of adoration in silence after which the altar is stripped. The faithful
are then invited to continue in adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament for a suitable length of time.

Good Friday
El silencio reina en la liturgia del Viernes Santo de la

Pasin del Seor, an en sus tres partes de la liturgia. Tal
como termina la reunin de la comunidad de la noche
anterior, as inicia la liturgia de hoy: el altar desnudo, el
pueblo en silencio. En procesin, los sacerdotes y diconos
se dirigen ante el altar donde se postran por unos momentos
en reverencia. El primer canto en que participa el pueblo
(aparte del amn despus de la oracin, si el sacerdote la
canta) es la respuesta al salmo, Salmo 30 (31), cuyo texto
nos muestra un sentimiento y enfoque ms sumiso y meditativo. Hoy, la Plegaria Universal toma una forma nica: un
dicono o cantor expresa la intencin, se tiene un momento
de silencio, y luego el sacerdote dice o canta la oracin. Son
diez intenciones, aunque el obispo puede permitir alguna
otra intencin. Tambin se puede poner en prctica la tradicin de arrodillarse y levantarse durante stas, postura que

Silence rules throughout the Good Friday liturgy, in each

of its three parts. Just as the gathering ends in silence the
previous day, so todays celebration begins. The altar is
bare and the community waits in silence. The priests and
deacons process and then prostrate themselves before
the altar in reverent silence. The first song that the people
participate in (other than the amen if the priest chants the
opening prayer) is the response to the psalm (Psalm 30
[31]) whose text reveals a more somber and meditative
sentiment and focus. The solemn intercessions take on a
unique form today: a deacon or cantor expresses the intention, followed by a moment of silence; then the priest says
or chants the prayer. There are ten intentions, although the
bishop may allow another. The practice of kneeling and
then standing during the intercessions may be followed.
Kneeling represents a posture that allows us to understand
the spirit of the rite in the context of progressive solemnity.

La segunda parte de la liturgia es la adoracin de la cruz,

la cual la rbrica describe como una adoracin solemne.
Cuando el Misal utiliza la palabra solemne describe algo
muy importante y festivo (en gran celebracin), no en un
sentido serio o grave como en algunas circunstancias se
entiende la palabra. El texto de la primera antfona indica el tono del rito: Tu Cruz adoramos, Seor, y tu santa
resurreccin alabamos y glorificamos, pues del rbol de la
Cruz ha venido la alegra al mundo entero. Aunque dentro
de un contexto cultural solemos usar cantos con textos y
melodas penitenciales, es importante tomar en cuenta la
naturaleza de los cantos que utilicemos durante este tiempo
de adoracin para mantener la intencin del rito. Habr
que preparar varios cantos para acompaar la procesin
durante la adoracin de la cruz tomando en cuenta la participacin de los fieles. Un estudio de los diversos textos
de las antfonas e himnos que nos proporciona el Misal
Romano nos da a conocer los sentimientos y enfoque de
este rito. Los Improperios se dividen en partes para dos
coros (vase Pueblo Mo, [FC3 344; ocpenespanol.org/
compositions/31919] de Frank Gmez). Tienen el sentido de quejas o reproches de Jess en la cruz y Dios a su
pueblo; nuestra respuesta es adorar la cruz con un beso
reverente. La respuesta en el trisagio: Santo Dios. Santo,
fuerte. Santo inmortal, ten piedad de nosotros es cantada.
Adems, la cuarta opcin en el Misal Romano es un himno
cuyo bello texto potico captura el sentimiento expresado
en la primera opcin (vase Oh Cruz, Te Adoramos,
FC3 341; ocpenespanol.org/compositions/5229). Tambin
existe la opcin de cantar el Stabat Mater u otro canto en
memoria de la compasin de la Santsima Virgen Mara.
La tercera parte es el rito de Comunin, durante el cual
prevalece el silencio. Despus de los preparativos del altar
para la Comunin, se dice el Padrenuestro. La rbrica pide
acompaar la procesin de Comunin con un canto apropiado, sin ofrecer una antfona. Se guarda silencio despus
de la Comunin y como de costumbre se tiene la oracin
despus de la Comunin. Se termina la liturgia de hoy con
la oracin sobre el pueblo y todos se retiran en silencio. No
hay despedida.
Vigilia Pascual
sta es la madre de todas las vigilias y la ms importante del
ao. Preparen todo con antelacin. Puesto que es la nica
celebracin de la comunidad esta noche, habr que tomar
en cuenta el contexto de la diversidad de culturas reunidas.
Es recomendable consultar el documento de Mark Francis,
La Liturgia en una Comunidad de Diversas Culturas: Una
Gua para Entenderla (ocpenespanol.org/30113818). La
celebracin tiene cuatro partes que van aumentando en
su naturaleza dinmica. La primera es el Lucernario; ste
refleja el ambiente de la noche anterior: silencio y oscuridad. El pueblo se rene fuera del templo, alrededor del
fuego para meditar los portentos del Seor. Se bendice
el fuego y se enciende el cirio pascual, del cual los fieles

Holy Cross, which the rubric describes as solemn.
When the missal describes something as solemn we are
to understand it as something important and festive and
not necessarily something serious or grave as we sometimes do. Take into account the text of the first antiphon:
We adore your Cross, O Lord, we praise and glorify your
holy Resurrection, for behold, because of the wood of
a tree joy has come to the whole world. Even though,
within a cultural context, customarily we tend to use texts
and melodies that are penitential, it is important to take
care in the songs we select for this time of adoration
so that we are able to maintain the intent of the rite. We
should prepare several songs to accompany the procession of the faithful during the adoration of the cross, taking into account the peoples participation. A study of the
diverse texts of the antiphons and hymns in the Roman
Missal will give us a better understanding of the emotions
and focus of this rite. The Reproaches are divided into
parts for two choirs (see Pueblo Mo [FC3 344, ocp.org/
compositions/31919] composed by Frank Gmez). There
is a sense of complaint on the part of Jesus on the cross
and of God against the people to which our only response
is to adore the cross with a reverent kiss while we sing
the trisagion: Holy is God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and
Immortal One, have mercy on us. In addition, the fourth
option in the missal is a hymn whose lovely poetic text
gives us the same feeling as the first antiphon option (see
Oh Cruz, Te Adoramos, FC3 341, ocp.org/compositions/5229). There is also the option of singing the Stabat
Mater or another song in memory of the compassion of
the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The third part of the Good Friday liturgy is the
Communion rite during which silence is prevalent. After
the preparatory rites for Communion, the Our Father is
recited. The rubric asks that the Communion procession
be accompanied by an appropriate song but doesnt offer
an optional antiphon. Silence is observed and, as is customary, the prayer after Communion is said. The liturgy is
concluded with the prayer over the people and all depart
in silence. There is no dismissal.
Easter Vigil
This is the mother of all vigils, needless to say, the
most important of the entire liturgical year. Everything
should be prepared well in advance. Since it is the only
celebration for the entire community, during our planning we should keep in mind the context of the cultural
diversity of those gathered. I recommend consulting Mark
Francis Liturgy in a Culturally Diverse Community: A
Guide Towards Understanding (ocp.org/30113818). The
celebration has four parts that grow in importance in their
dynamic nature. The first part is the Lucernarium and
has the same feel of silence and darkness of the previous night. The people gather outside around the fire to

meditate on the marvels of the Lord. The fire is blessed,

the paschal candle is lit, and the faithful light their candles
before processing into the darkened chapel, filling it with
the candles light. The proclamation the Light of Christ
and the response Thanks be to God should be sung.
The Easter Proclamation is then sung to which the people
may respond with a sung acclamation according to the
Misal Romano.
The second part of the Vigil is the Liturgy of the Word.
Although there are several options for readings, care must
me taken so that those present hear the wonders the
Lord God has done for his people from the beginning.
The dynamic created by reading, silence, responsorial
psalm, and prayer helps us to listen, meditate, and pray in
a more profound manner. After the final reading from the
Old Testament, the Gloria is sung and the bells are rung.
Following the epistle of Saint Paul, the solemn alleluia,
which has not been sung throughout Lent, is sung with
verses from Psalm 117 (118).
The third part is the Baptismal Liturgy. The Litany of
the Saints is sung, with all standing and responding.
The priest may chant the blessing of baptismal water.
Following the baptisms the faithful renew their baptismal
vows after which a song that is baptismal in character
is sung while the priest sprinkles the assembly with the
baptismal water. After the Baptismal Liturgy, the universal prayer takes place and then follows the Liturgy of
the Eucharist, the fourth and final part. The eucharistic
acclamations are sung with renewed Easter joy and, as
the neophites receive the Body and Blood of the Lord for
the first time, we sing the Communion antiphon (see El
Cordero Pascual/Our Paschal Sacrifice, FC3 359, ocp.
org/compositions/78500); Psalm 117 (118) would also
be appropriate as would be another Easter Communion
song. To dismiss the faithful the solemn Easter blessing
is used and the dismissal is sung with its double alleluia.
Easter Sunday
Continuing in the same spirit of the previous night, today
is celebrated in grand style. The solemn Gloria is sung.
Before the singing of the alleluia and the proclamation
of the Gospel, the Easter sequence is sung. Consider
learning Jaime Cortezs setting, Secuencia Pascual
(FC3 377, ocp.org/compositions/17028). After the homily the renewal of baptismal promises may take place
instead of the Creed. The solemn Easter blessing is
used as is the solemn dismissal with its double alleluia.
The celebration of the Paschal Triduum ends with Easter
Vespers this evening.

canto del salmo responsorial y oracin nos ayuda a escuchar, meditar y orar de una manera ms profunda. Despus
de la ltima lectura del Antiguo Testamento, se canta el
Gloria y se tocan las campanas. Despus de la epstola de
san Pablo se entona solemnemente el aleluya, que hemos
extraado durante toda la Cuaresma, con las estrofas del
Salmo 117. La tercera parte es la Liturgia Bautismal. Se
canta la letana de los santos y todos de pie responden. El
sacerdote puede entonar la bendicin del agua bautismal.

vez el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Seor resucitado, cantamos

Paschal Sacrifice, FC3 359; ocpenespanol.org/compositions/78500); el Salmo 117 (118) tambin es apropiado u
otro canto de Comunin pascual. Para despedir a los fieles
se utiliza la bendicin solemne para la Vigilia pascual y
Pascua y se canta la despedida solemne de Pascua con sus
dos aleluyas.
Domingo de Pascua
Siguiendo en el espritu de la noche anterior, hoy se
celebra en grande. Se canta el Gloria solemne. Antes
de la proclamacin del Evangelio se canta la secuencia
pascual. Consideren aprender el arreglo de Jaime Cortez,
Secuencia Pascual (FC3 377; ocpenespanol.org/compositions/17028). En los Estados Unidos, despus de la
homila, en Domingo de Pascua se tiene la renovacin de
las promesas bautismales (no se dice el Credo). Se usa la
misma bendicin solemne que usamos durante la Vigilia
Pascual y se canta la despedida solemne de Pascua con sus
dos aleluyas. La celebracin del Triduo Pascual termina con
las Vsperas Pascuales.

Este tiempo nos llama a la conversin y a la reconciliacin.
La primera exige un cambio de corazn, la segunda es
el resultado de la primera. Ms que la seal de la ceniza
en la frente, importa que el corazn se mantenga abierto
a escuchar la palabra para orientarlo hacia el Seor. El
ambiente debe reflejar que la aridez de nuestra vida slo se
enriquece con la vida que nos comunica Dios por medio de
Jesucristo, su nico Hijo. La msica, un poco ms sobria en
este tiempo, ha de apoyar textos que reflejen la invitacin
que hace el Evangelio: hacer penitencia, orar ms y ser
generosos con los ms necesitados. Cuales oportunidades
de crecimiento espiritual les ofrecemos a nuestros ministros laicos y voluntarios durante esta temporada? Se han
planificado retiros para los ministerios parroquiales o para
los feligreses?

Ante la cada de los seres humanos al pecado, se alza
la salvacin en Jesucristo. San Pablo afirma que la Ley
ya no conduce a la salvacin: Jess es el Salvador. Es
importante que al comienzo de la Cuaresma se oriente a
todos los ministros y voluntarios de la parroquia a orar
ms y mejor, a ser ms generosos y a ayunar. ste es el
tiempo en que se pueden tener cenas parroquiales con
poco alimento (quizs pan y sopa) para recaudar fondos
que cada grupo pueda llevar a las organizaciones que
ayudan a desamparados e incapacitados. ste es el tiempo,
al comienzo de la Cuaresma, en que la liturgia se debe
convertir en accin pastoral como testimonio vivo del
encuentro con el Seor que muere y resucita por todos.

La oracin colecta de la misa nos invita a contemplar la
gloria de Dios y, por ello, a vivir con esperanza, conscientes de que la muerte ha sido vencida por la entrega
de Jess en el Calvario y por su gloriosa resurreccin.
Es ste el mensaje que el pasaje de la Transfiguracin
nos presenta en la liturgia de hoy. Es importante notar el
contraste entre el llamado a la penitencia que nos hace la

This is a time of conversion and reconciliation. The first
demands a change of heart; the latter is the fruit of all
conversion experiences. More than the imposition of
ashes on our heads, what matters to the Lord is a heart
open to hear the word that orients us all to God. The
environment should reflect the arid existence in which we
live that always calls for new life and new beginnings, the
gift of God to all in Jesus Christ, his only Son. The music
of this season, more restrained than usual, should still
reflect the beauty of the texts, particularly the invitation that
arises out of the Gospel reading when Jesus asks us to
pray, do penance, and be generous with the most needy
among us. What opportunities for spiritual growth do we
offer during this season? Have we planned any retreats
for our parishioners and our lay ministers?

As todays first reading reminds us of the fall of humanity,
we discover in the rest of the texts the nature of our salvation. Saint Paul proclaims that the Law does not lead to
salvation; Jesus Christ is the one, true Savior. Lent is an
important time to encourage all parish ministers and volunteers to improve their prayer life and spend more time
in prayer, to be more generous concerning the needs of
others, and to fast. This would be a good time of year to
reflect on our fasting with light parish meals of soup and
bread at which donations may be collected for the various
ministries to bring to organizations that take care of the
homeless or those in need. This is the time, at the beginning of Lent, for the liturgy to be transformed into pastoral
action as a living testimony of our encounter with the Lord
who died and rose again for us all.

The Collect of todays Mass leads us to contemplate the
glory of God and, thus, to live always in hope, conscious
that death has been overcome through Jesus sacrifice
at Calvary and his glorious resurrection. This is todays
message from the Transfiguration story. It is important to
note the contrast between the Lenten call to penitence
and the goal that we journey toward during this time:

the glory of God. Whereas last Sunday the diocesan

bishop most likely celebrated the Rite of Election with
the catechumens, there is no specific rite for them this
Sunday; however, liturgical teams must prepare the parish catechumens and the assembly for the next three
Sundays during which the scrutinies take place. These
are important moments for all who participate in the healing and exorcism of the catechumens, preparing them for
their initiation on Easter.

This great solemnity surfaces in the midst of our Lenten
season as we are called to honor Saint Joseph, the
Patron of the Universal Church. Today, we appreciate
Josephs commitment as Jesus adoptive father throughout his earthly life. The readings remind us that Joseph is
a descendant of David and, like Abraham, was faithful to
the covenant, a truly just man who dedicated his life to his
family, his work, and his people. Let us pray, through the
intercession of Saint Joseph, that our liturgical assemblies
may proclaim a song of joy for the new covenant of Jesus
that we celebrate in the Eucharist. Maybe some of the
youth group members can present the story of Joseph to
highlight family values, even among those who have been
deprived of such values in their own families.

The Year A readings emphasize the three most significant
signs for the catechumens who continue their journey of
faith: today, water, and the next two Sundays, light and
life. Although these readings may be used in the other
Sunday cycles (B and C), their importance in this cycle
is unquestionable. In the story of the Samaritan woman,
we can all identify our need to face our own history,
always willing to meet the healing Jesus who transforms
our lives. Catechists and youth leaders can share the
story with youngsters and young adults alike during the
week, always in a spirit of hope. The Lord Jesus who
redeemed the woman of Samaria continues to redeem
us through the sacraments of the Church, in particular
through the sacrament of penance and reconciliation.

Most of the images of Our Lady show her with the Christ
Child in her arms. In fact, such is the history of the iconography of the Church. Our statues are not symbols for
worship; rather, they are symbols that represent a deeper
reality that inspires us throughout our journey of faith.
During the first centuries of the Church, such iconography served to teach a people who did not know how to
read or write. In the image of Our Lady holding the Child
Jesus we discover the mystery of the Annunciation, narrated by the Gospel today, a solemnity we celebrate nine
months before Christmas. In Marys yes we find a call
to say yes to the Lord in our daily life. Let us take the
opportunity to use this, or even another, image of Mary as
a teaching tool for our youngsters concerning the great
mystery of God incarnate of the Virgin Mary that he might
become the Savior of the world.
Cuaresma y la meta hacia la cual caminamos en este tiempo: la gloria de Dios. Probablemente, el domingo pasado,
el obispo diocesano haya celebrado con los catecmenos
el Rito de Eleccin. La liturgia de hoy no provee un rito
para ellos, pero ya desde el prximo domingo comienzan
los escrutinios: exorcismos importantes de sanacin en
los que participan los miembros de la comunidad sobre
aquellos que se preparan para la iniciacin cristiana.

En medio del tiempo de Cuaresma surge la solemnidad
del Patrn de la Iglesia Universal, san Jos. Esta venerable
figura nos ayuda a apreciar la paternidad adoptiva que Jess
tuvo en su vida humana. Las lecturas de hoy afirman que
Jos desciende de la familia de David y que comparti en
su propia vida aquellas cualidades que distinguieron a su
antepasado Abraham: la fidelidad a la alianza, la justicia
y el amor por su familia y por su pueblo. Oremos para que
san Jos interceda por todas nuestras asambleas litrgicas,
para que nuestros cantos proclamen con alegra nuestra
fidelidad ante la nueva alianza de Jess que celebramos en
cada Eucarista. Quizs en los grupos de jvenes se pudiera
presentar la vida de san Jos para resaltar los valores familiares, incluso entre aquellos que se sienten ajenos a ellos.
III Domingo de Cuaresma

Las lecturas del Ao A destacan los tres signos primordiales
que han de preparar a los catecmenos en su jornada de fe:
este domingo, el agua, y en los prximos dos domingos,
la luz y la vida. De hecho, por la importancia que han
tenido siempre para la Iniciacin Cristiana, estas lecturas se
pueden usar en los otros aos (Aos B y C). Con la historia
de la samaritana, los feligreses afrontan parte de su propia
historia, siempre abiertos a vivir transformados cuando se
encuentran con Jesucristo. Se recomienda que los catequistas y grupos de jvenes compartan los textos de hoy en sus
clases y actividades. De la misma manera, se recomienda
que se resalte la esperanza como marco de referencia. El
Seor que redimi a la mujer de Samaria se hace presente
en nuestras vidas por medio de los sacramentos, sobre todo,
en el de la penitencia, para redimirnos.

La mayora de las imgenes de la Santsima Virgen presentan a Mara sosteniendo al Nio Dios en sus brazos. De
hecho, en la historia de la iconografa de la Iglesia, nuestras
imgenes no se exponen para ser adoradas sino para ser
veneradas; se convierten en smbolos que inspiran nuestro
compromiso de fe. En los primeros siglos, las imgenes
eran puntos de catequesis para el pueblo que no saba leer
ni escribir. Por ello, la imagen de Mara con el nio nos
muestra el gran misterio de la Anunciacin, narrado en el
Evangelio de hoy, nueve meses antes de la Navidad. En el
S de la Virgen existe un llamado a responder que s al
Seor en nuestra vida diaria. Aprovechemos la oportunidad
para utilizar sta u otra imagen de Mara, para ensearles a
nuestros nios y jvenes el gran misterio de Dios encarnado
en la Virgen para ser el Salvador del mundo.

Como parte del segundo escrutinio de los catecmenos, las
lecturas de hoy resaltan la luz del Seor, que hace ver a
los ciegos desde lo ms profundo de su corazn. Por eso,
san Pablo insiste en que debemos vivir como hijos de la
luz, lejos de las tinieblas. Dios nos ha escogido en Jess
para seguirle siempre. Respondemos bien a ese llamado?
Para la asamblea que ora por y con los catecmenos, esta
pregunta es de suma importancia. Se invita a los coordinadores de la liturgia a colaborar con los catequistas para que,
juntos, promuevan los smbolos que hoy destaca la liturgia
para que, a travs de ellos, todos reflexionemos mejor sobre
el llamado a seguir al Seor en una vocacin especfica. La
homila de hoy, como siempre, debe conducir a esta reflexin en la comunidad.

En las lecturas de hoy se palpa la tensin entre el sentirse
abandonado por la vida humana y el encuentro con Dios
que provoca una nueva vida en todos los que creen en su
infinita misericordia. Tanto en la antfona de entrada, como
en la oracin colecta y, sobre todo, en las lecturas, esta
tensin se palpa progresivamente, como en una pieza musical cuya meloda va en crescendo. Para Marta y Mara, en
el Evangelio, la tensin se hizo realidad con la muerte de
su hermano Lzaro, pero Cristo no slo vino a consolarlas,
sino a pedirles una profesin de fe. En la medida en que se
les ha pedido a los catecmenos que conozcan y aprendan
el Credo y el Padrenuestro en las semanas anteriores, a
nosotros tambin se nos pide que afirmemos nuestra fe en el
Seor que nos brinda una vida nueva, da tras da. Con estos
textos comenzamos a prepararnos para la gran Semana
Santa que se avecina en unos das.

Es importante que la comisin de liturgia de la comunidad
haya preparado este domingo, y el resto de la Semana Santa,
con antelacin. Importa mucho que el ambiente del santuario
refleje tanto la aridez de la Cuaresma, como la esperanza
de una nueva realidad, que ha de transformar el desierto de
la vida con el aroma de la esperanza que la celebracin de
nuestra redencin conlleva. Los diconos deben preparar
bien la lectura con que, a la puerta de la Iglesia, se congregan los ministros para la bendicin de los ramos. Hay
espacio para la procesin solemne fuera de la parroquia?
De qu manera se distribuyen los ramos? Involucramos a
los nios del colegio o de la catequesis en esta u otra celebracin? Cmo podemos lograr que la asamblea preste ms
atencin a la Pasin que se proclama? Han ensayado bien
los proclamadores de la Pasin? No es hoy el momento de
responder a estas preguntas. Para evitar las improvisaciones,
se necesita un tiempo de planificacin adecuado desde el
mes de enero. La realidad es innegable: caminamos juntos
con Jess para experimentar en las celebraciones cercanas
su paso de la muerte a la vida, es decir, el Misterio pascual.

As part of the second scrutiny of the catechumens, the
readings today highlight the light of the Lord, he who gives
sight to the blind from the depths of his heart. For this reason, Saint Paul insists that we are called to be children of
light, no longer surrounded by darkness. God has chosen
us in Jesus to follow him always. Are we responding to his
call in the best way possible? This question is of the utmost
importance for the members of the assembly who pray
with, and for, the catechumens today. Liturgical coordinators are encouraged to collaborate with parish catechists
to promote the symbols that todays liturgy displays in the
word, proclaimed and shared by all. Through such collaboration, the entire assembly will be called to evaluate its
response to Gods call to follow Jesus wherever he leads
us. The homily, as usual, is pivotal in these reflections.

In todays readings we sense the tension between that
well-known feeling of abandonment, somewhat typical
of human life, and our encounter with God that brings
with it new life for all who believe in his infinite mercy. The
entrance antiphon, the opening Collect, and, above all,
todays readings point to this tension in various stages, as
in a musical composition with a melody that builds in crescendo. For Mary and Martha, in todays Gospel, the tension becomes real with the death of their brother Lazarus.
Yet Jesus not only came to console them but also to
seek their trust and their faith. While in previous weeks
the catechumens were asked to learn and remember the
Creed and the Our Father, so now we too are asked to
affirm our faith in the Lord, who brings us new life each
day. With todays texts, we begin to prepare for the great
Holy Week that awaits us in the coming days.

It is important that the local liturgical team has prepared
todays celebration, and the rest of Holy Week, ahead of
time. The environment in the sanctuary should display not
only the dryness of Lent, but also the promise of new
beginnings, the journey from the desert to the fragrances
of new life. Deacons should be well-prepared to proclaim
the Gospel at the entrance of the Church when the palm
branches are blessed. The following questions should
have been answered months ago: Is there enough space
in the sanctuary? Can the procession take place outside
the Church? How are the palm branches distributed? Do
we involve children in the procession or anywhere else in
the celebration? How can we get the assembly to focus
more on the Passion that will be proclaimed during the
Liturgy of the Word? Have those proclaiming the Passion
had sufficient rehearsal time? This is a time of execution
and not of improvisations. The reality of the moment is
crucial for our understanding: we are to walk together with
Jesus in the following days so that we might experience
his journey from death to life, that is, the paschal mystery.

This is a festive day for the Church. Those in charge of
the environment should be aware of the many changes

involved in the Easter Triduum that begins tonight: from

white flowers and incense, to restraint in the adornment of
the sanctuary on Good Friday, to the festive preparations
for the Easter Vigil. Today we celebrate the institution of
the Eucharist and music plays a significant role in providing texts and melodies in which the assembly can readily
join. In many parishes, this is a multicultural or multilingual
celebration that requires a printed program that can be
used by the entire congregation to encourage everyones
participation despite the diversity of cultures and languages. The entrance antiphon of todays evening Mass
captures the tone of the entire celebration; in the words
of Saint Paul, We should glory in the Cross of our Lord
Jesus Christ.

We witness today the best exchange between the liturgy of the Church and the popular piety of the faithful.
It is imperative that the assembly take advantage of this
moment to experience in this exchange a deeper understanding of the paschal mystery. Thus, they will be more
ready to go and bear fruit in the community. Besides the
Stations of the Cross, in many places an outdoor procession is held with the images of Our Lady of Sorrows and
the Lord carrying the cross. The procession, however,
should lead participants back to the church and the Good
Friday liturgy: to hear the Passion of Our Lord, narrated by
the Gospel of John; to pray the solemn intercessions; to
adore the Cross of our crucified Lord; and to receive Holy
Communion. Mimetic (dramatic) representations should
not exceed the anamnesis (memorial) of the service. The
entire celebration should lead us to understand the darkness of Christs death with the hope of his resurrection.
In some places, reflecting on the Seven Last Words of
Christ might help to encourage community participation
in a special way.

It is recommended that throughout the Triduum the
assembly be invited to participate in morning prayer and
so begin each day with the Liturgy of the Hours. Holy
Saturday may begin in the same way. Rehearsals have
most likely been scheduled in the morning for the elect
who are to be initiated and for all the liturgical ministers
involved in the Vigil this evening. This is the Holy Night the
deacon announces as he sings the Exsultet with great joy,
illumined by the paschal candle situated next to the ambo.
The seven readings and psalms help us to understand
the true Passover, Christs crossing from death to life. The
singing of the Gloria and the alleluia, the initiation of the
elect (catechumens), the celebration of the Eucharistall
this leads us to become an offering of praise to the Father
in thanksgiving for the gift of Jesus Christ, raised from the
dead, he who now accompanies us through the work of
the Holy Spirit.

For Christians, the Easter celebration is the most important solemnity of the entire year. As faithful disciples of
the Lord we draw near with Mary and John to the empty
tomb to discover that Christ has conquered death. This is

Hoy contemplamos el mejor intercambio celebrativo entre
la liturgia de la Iglesia y la piedad popular. Importa mucho
que la asamblea aproveche el momento para que, al experimentar este intercambio, su fe en el Misterio pascual crezca
y d fruto en su comunidad. En algunos sitios, adems del
Va Crucis, se prepara una gran procesin con las imgenes
de la Madre Dolorosa y el Seor cargando la Cruz o sentado como reo de muerte. Esta procesin debe conducir a
los participantes a la gran liturgia del Viernes Santo, a la
proclamacin de la Pasin, la adoracin de la Cruz, las preces universales y la Sagrada Comunin. La representacin
mimtica (dramtica) no debe superar la anamnesis
(memorial) de este da tan especial que nos conduce en su
aspecto celebrativo hacia las tinieblas de la muerte de Jess,
pero siempre con la esperanza de una feliz resurreccin. En
ciertos lugares, la predicacin de las Siete ltimas Palabras
de Jess ayuda a profundizar esta participacin comunitaria
de una manera especial.

Durante el Triduo se exhorta que la asamblea celebre la
oracin de la maana cada da para comenzar el da con la
Liturgia de las Horas. As puede comenzar el Sbado Santo
que, en muchos sitios, se utiliza para los ensayos propios
de la Vigilia Pascual, con los catecmenos y todos los
ministros que han de participar en la Vigilia ms tarde. Esta
es la Noche Santa que el dicono anuncia cuando canta el
Exsultet con alegra junto al cirio pascual que, iluminando
el ambn, se convierte en un signo primordial durante la
celebracin. Las siete lecturas y los salmos nos preparan a
comprender el paso de Cristo de la muerte a la vida. El
canto del Gloria y del aleluya, la iniciacin de los elegidos
(catecmenos), la celebracin de la Eucarista, en fin, toda
la celebracin, nos invita a convertirnos en una ofrenda de
alabanza al Padre por el regalo de Jesucristo, ya resucitado,
que nos acompaa siempre por la accin del Espritu Santo.

Triduo Santo, no pueden ignorar a los muchos que se acercan hoy a la iglesia y que no asisten con frecuencia. Quizs
una comisin parroquial, distinta a la de la liturgia, puede
preparar tarjetas de bienvenida para que, durante la semana,
los miembros del consejo parroquial llamen a estas familias
y ofrezcan los servicios de la parroquia. Si Cristo ha resucitado en la liturgia, tambin ha resucitado en el corazn de
los fieles que quieren conocerlo mejor. Es nuestra la misin
de darlo a conocer en la comunidad a travs de la oracin
y del servicio.

visitors who come to church today. Perhaps a parish

information so that members of the pastoral council can
get in touch with them over the next few weeks. If Christ
has risen in the liturgy, he must also rise in the hearts of
the many who want to come to know him better. It is our
mission to make him known in our communities through
prayer and service to others.

Hoy, en el Ao A, las dos primeras lecturas nos presentan
el modelo de una Iglesia que vive con esperanza y que,
al compartirlo todo, se convierte en un signo de nueva
vida para el mundo entero. No obstante, el Evangelio que
se proclama en los tres aos del ciclo coloca la duda
y la bsqueda de certeza en Toms, quien no est presente cuando el Seor resucitado se aparece ante sus fieles
amigos. Entre la duda y la confianza caminamos todos en
nuestra vida imperfecta que clama por la eternidad. Hoy
nos encomendamos al Seor resucitado para que cesen
nuestras dudas sobre nuestros pastores, los ministros laicos
y los voluntarios y para que crezca entre todos la confianza
que nos conduce al dilogo y la esperanza que nos motiva a
construir un mundo nuevo en nuestro ambiente y en nuestra
sociedad. Hoy nos encomendamos al Seor en su divina
misericordia.

Con el salmo de hoy, la Iglesia en oracin suplica que el
Seor siga mostrando el camino de la vida. Es un camino
donde se encuentran los que buscan a Dios, aunque a veces
tengan miedo, y lo reconocen en los signos que la propia
Iglesia les muestra. Es la historia de los caminantes de
Emas, narrada en el Evangelio. Estos discpulos huyen
de Jerusaln con miedo porque sienten que han perdido
al Mesas; al encontrarlo en el camino, le piden que se
quede con ellos. Al compartir el pan, regresan fortalecidos
a la misma ciudad para dar testimonio de la fe. Es la historia
de la Iglesia de los primeros cristianos quienes, ante las persecuciones y opresiones del momento, fueron testigos fieles
del Cristo resucitado que siempre les acompaaba. Es tambin nuestra historia hoy en da. Para Dios todo es posible,
pero sin Dios poco podemos hacer. Dios nos da la fuerza
para afrontar el mal que nos rodea y nos hace partcipes de
su victoria desde la cruz. Solamente nos pide que seamos
fieles y que caminemos con l por el camino de la vida.

compromiso con el Seor resucitado. Cada semana nos trae
un tema distinto que nos hace renovar la fe y apreciar mejor
el regalo de Jess, el Seor. Este domingo se conoce como

The first two readings of Year A offer us an ideal image
of the Church, a community that lives with hope and
is willing to become a sign of new life for the whole
world. Nonetheless, the Gospel is the same for all three
cycles, confronting us with Thomas doubt and quest
for certainty, since he was not present when the risen
Lord first appeared to his disciples. We journey through
life between the fears that surface from our doubts and
the trust that arises from our faith in the risen Lord. We
give ourselves to the Lord and ask him to rid us of all
doubts concerning our shepherds, our lay ministers, or
our volunteers so that we may grow in trust and hope.
Only then can we lead our communities in true dialogue
through which the hope of Christians may be experienced
by others and, together, raise up a new world among us,
in our society and culture. May the Lords divine mercy
empower us to carry out this task!

Todays psalm might serve as a summary of the entire liturgical celebration as the Church asks the Lord to show us
the path of life. It is a path where those who seek the Lord
can meet, even though, at times, they are fearful. On this
path all can find the signs of life that the Church reveals. It
is the Gospel story of the disciples of Emmaus who, out
of fear, flee Jerusalem, believing that their Messiah has
died. Nevertheless, once they encounter him along the
way and break bread with him, they return back to the city
with a renewed strength and a desire to bear witness to
his presence. It is the story of the early Christians who suffered persecution and oppression, those who lived to be
witnesses of the risen Lord. It is also our story today. For
God, all things are possible. Without God, we can do nothing. God strengthens us in the midst of our fears to face the
evil that surrounds us, making us participants of his victory
on the cross. God only requires one thing of us: fidelity to
his calling. Only then can we truly walk with the Lord on the
path of new life that he offers us.

The fifty days of the Easter season are known as the
period of mystagogy, not only for the newly initiated
members of the community, but for the entire Church.
During this time we are renewed and revitalized as we
delve further into the mystery of the risen Christ. Each
week during this period we are given new themes that

help us strengthen our faith commitment. This Sunday is

known as the Sunday of the good shepherd. In many of
our dioceses, we have the opportunity to participate in the
ordinations of new shepherds: priests and deacons called
to lead the flock on the path of love and hope found in
our resurrected life. This phase of mystagogy also invites
us to celebrate other sacraments of initiation such as first
Communion and confirmation. This is the time to pray for
fidelity in our own baptismal commitment and in the commitment of parish volunteers. It may be a good time for the
process of stewardship to take place so that, as we see
the Church grow with new shepherds and new members,
we may announce the kingdom of God more clearly in the
style of the New Evangelization.

The selection of new servers, traditionally known as
deacons, appears today in the first reading. The early
Christians needed to take care of those who were not
cared for. In the Gospel, when the anxious apostles felt
the need to have the Lord near, Jesus assured them
that he would not abandon them, saying, I am the way,
the truth, and the life. Saint Johns Gospel also helps
us to feel the nearness of the risen Lord. He has never
abandoned us. He lives in the Church, in the service of
deacons, priests, bishops, and lay men and women,
committed to preach his word. He lives in the needs of
the poor and the homeless. He lives that we may show
those who are afraid that he is the way, the truth, and the
life that never ends.

This Sunday presents us with a variety of texts that affirm
the mission of the Church, although Jesus ascends to the
Father with the promise of sending the Holy Spirit to all who
believe in him. The impact of Philips preaching in Samaria
delighted the apostles, who then placed their hands on
the new members of the community. Peters instructions in
the second reading, and the assurances that Christ himself communicates to his disciples in the Gospel, help us
understand the way in which we are to experience the risen
Lord in our daily journey: through the eyes of a faith that
comes from receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. This may be
a good time to gather all of the youth who may be graduating from different schools or moving to a new place and
assure them, through prayer and celebration, that the Holy
Spirit will always accompany them through the Church.

This solemnity, celebrated either on Thursday or the following Sunday, not only highlights our belief that Jesus
ascended to the Father, but that he sent his disciples to
carry out a unique and specific mission: go, therefore,
and teach all nations. All of the baptized share in this
mission alongside our pastors. We are called to lead by
example and announce that the risen Lord guides and
strengthens us through the Holy Spirit. The exaltation
of Jesus in this celebration fills us with hope, for where
the Lord is we too shall be. In the meantime, let us seek
strength to carry out his mission.
el domingo del Buen Pastor. Los textos nos ayudan a comprender mejor lo que probablemente suceda en muchas de
nuestras dicesis: las ordenaciones de diconos y de sacerdotes. Hoy oramos por nuestros pastores que, al responder
al llamado del Buen Pastor, conducen a los fieles al camino
del amor y de la esperanza que la vida resucitada les ofrece.
En este tiempo de mistagogia se celebran tambin otros

La eleccin de nuevos servidores, llamados tradicionalmente
diconos, aparece hoy en la primera lectura. La Iglesia de
los primeros cristianos necesitaba cubrir las necesidades de
aquellos que no estaban atendidos. En el Evangelio de hoy,
cuando los apstoles, algo ansiosos, sintieron la necesidad de
tener cerca al Seor resucitado, Jess les asegur que no los
abandonara. No pierdan la paz, les dijo, Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida. Estos textos del evangelista san Juan
nos ayudan a sentir de cerca al Seor resucitado, quien nunca
nos ha abandonado. Vive en la Iglesia, en el servicio de
diconos, presbteros, obispos y laicos comprometidos. Vive
en las necesidades de los pobres y desamparados. Vive para
que nosotros siempre le mostremos a los que tienen miedo
que l es el camino, la verdad y la vida que nunca termina.

Este domingo presenta una serie de textos que afirman la
misin de la Iglesia a pesar de que Jess asciende a su Padre
con la promesa de enviar el Espritu Santo. El impacto de
la predicacin de Felipe en Samaria llen de regocijo a los
apstoles, quienes impusieron las manos sobre los nuevos
miembros de la comunidad. Las instrucciones de Pedro en
la segunda lectura, y la seguridad con que Cristo mismo
les habla a sus discpulos en el Evangelio, nos ayuda a
comprender de qu manera podemos palpar la presencia
del Resucitado en nuestra jornada diaria: con los ojos de
la fe que nace de haber recibido el Espritu Santo. Quizs
sea ste un buen momento para congregar a los jvenes
de la parroquia que se gradan de varias instituciones o se
preparan para un cambio de lugar y asegurarles la compaa
del Espritu Santo en sus vidas por medio de la Iglesia.

Esta solemnidad, celebrada el Jueves o el domingo siguiente, no quiere destacar solamente que Jess regres al
Padre ascendiendo a los cielos; quiere destacar el envo
que hace Jess de sus discpulos con un mandato nico
y concreto: Vayan y enseen a todas las naciones. ste
es el mandato que todos los bautizados compartimos con
nuestros pastores. Estamos llamados a ensear, con nuestro
ejemplo, que el Resucitado nos gua y fortalece por medio
del Espritu Santo. La exaltacin de Jess por medio de
esta celebracin nos llena de esperanza, pues, donde est
el Seor, all estaremos todos. Mientras tanto, pedimos la
fuerza que necesitamos para llevar a cabo su mandato.

para interceder por nosotros. Esta compaa nos permite
dar gloria a Dios con ms claridad, como en el Evangelio
Jess lo anuncia en su oracin por la unidad de todos los
fieles. Pronto concluiremos con el tiempo pascual y nos
podemos preguntar si, durante este tiempo, la comunidad ha
reflexionado sobre el papel de Mara en la vida de la Iglesia.
Esta reflexin puede ser un puente entre la teologa y la piedad popular que la comunidad necesita. En ambos aspectos
se encuentra un comn denominador que sirva en el futuro
para una formacin continua de adultos en la comunidad.

La Misa de la Vigilia de esta gran solemnidad provee varias lecturas como primera lectura. Si la comunidad no
est preparada a celebrar durante gran parte de la noche, a
imitacin de la Vigilia Pascual, se debe escoger slo una de
ellas para la primera lectura. El contexto de la Vigilia es el
mismo que el del da de Pentecosts. La Iglesia celebra el
regalo de Jess el Espritu Santo para el crecimiento
de los fieles. La Iglesia nace del agua y del Espritu, del
costado de Cristo en la cruz, del sufrimiento de aquellos que
le siguieron y le siguen cada da, dispuestos a anunciar una
vida nueva en el Seor. Las comunidades pueden preparar
una vigilia de oracin e invitar a predicadores que puedan
ayudarles a profundizar sobre este gran misterio que, con
mucha alegra, celebramos en esta ocasin. Dicha Vigilia,
sin embargo, no se puede improvisar; exige que se prepare
con mucha antelacin.

El libro de los Hechos de los Apstoles describe el acontecimiento de Pentecosts que dio lugar al nacimiento de la
Iglesia y la misin de los apstoles. La segunda lectura, de
san Pablo, nos recuerda que la vida cristiana se concentra
en el Seor, quien envi el Espritu Santo para guiar la
vida de la Iglesia. Este envo nos recuerda el Evangelio
con la primera aparicin del Seor resucitado a sus amigos
y servidores. La secuencia del da desarrolla poticamente
toda esta historia y la mantiene viva por medio del canto.
Se recomienda que, si no se puede cantar, que se recite con
dos lectores dirigiendo a la asamblea que se puede dividir
entre las voces de los hombres y de las mujeres. Al concluir
la ltima celebracin del da, se traslada el cirio pascual a
la capilla o sitio donde se celebran los bautizos, ya que hoy
concluye la cincuentena de la Pascua para dar comienzo a
otras celebraciones importantes en la vida eclesial.

In todays reading from Acts, we hear about the apostles
shared faith life, together with Mary, the Mother who
sustains them in their need. Is this not the image of the
Church today? We continue to labor together in the mission of the Church, always seeking the intercession of
Mary whom the Lord has given us as intercessor. This
companionship allows us to glorify the Lord as Jesus
announces in todays Gospel. As the Easter season
draws to an end, we can ask ourselves whether the
community has reflected on the role of Mary in the life of
the Church. The fine line between theology and popular
piety may be diminished in reflecting on the motherhood
of Mary from both a biblical and theological perspective;
such reflection can lead to ongoing adult formation in the
community.

The Vigil Mass of this great solemnity provides four readings as options for the first reading of the Mass. If the
community is not prepared to celebrate a longer vigil, as
in the style of the Easter Vigil, one reading should be chosen. The context of this celebration is the same as that
of the day of Pentecost: the Church celebrates the gift of
Jesusthe Holy Spiritgiving thanks for the growth of
the faithful. The Church is born out of water and the Spirit,
from the side of Christ on the cross, from the suffering of
so many in the past and the present who announce with
their lives that Jesus offers a new way of life for all who
believe in him. Many of the communities may want to prepare a special evening of prayer with a preacher who can
help them delve deeper into the mystery we celebrate.
However, such a special evening cannot be improvised;
it must be well-prepared ahead of time.

Today the Book of Acts describes the events of Pentecost
and proclaims the birth of the Church and the mission of
the apostles. The second reading, from Saint Pauls letter, reminds us that our Christian life is centered around
the Lord, who sent the Holy Spirit to guide the life of the
Church. The sending of the apostles echoes todays
Gospel, which describes the first encounter of these men
with the risen Christ. The traditional sequence of the day
must be kept alive in song or in the assemblys proclamation. Guided by two readers (and, perhaps, divided into
the voices of men and women), this sequence narrates
the very gift we celebrate on this solemn occasion. At
the conclusion of todays last Mass, the paschal candle
is carried in procession to the area where baptisms are
normally celebrated, thus signaling the conclusion of the
Easter season and the beginning of other important celebrations in the life of the Church.

A musical legacy
We present for your review En Nuestra Noche (In
Our Darkness; ocp.org/compositions76120), by the late
Alberto Taul (19322007), from his collection Da de
Fiesta (ocp.org/20235). The composer described this
song of reconciliation with these words: The second
chapter of the book of Genesis describes the tragedy of
the human being who doesnt recognize his dependence
on God his Creator. The first sin is the paradigm of
all the sins of humanity. That is why in the refrain we
acknowledge that we were rebellious, shunning your law.
And when we sought freedom, we became enslaved.
The beginning of the first verse is a poetic description
of the temptations that we face in our lives. Then follows
an allusion to Christ, the Good Shepherd (Luke 15:45),
the one who frees us from all our worries. The second
verse summarizes the plight of the prodigal son (Luke
15:1132), traits of whom we all share. The music is
written in a minor key so that we might feel pain in our
souls as we sing.
Alberto Taul was born in a family of musicians in
Sabadell, a city in the Catalonian region of Spain. His
interest in composing religious hymns and popular
regional music became apparent from an early age. He
entered the seminary at age twenty and was ordained a
priest in 1961. He received a graduate degree in theology
from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, as well
as a graduate degree in sacred music from Saint Pius
X Institute, also in Rome. His studies took him to Italy,
Germany, and France, allowing him to learn new languages
along the way. During his frequent travels, he collected
music and translated the lyrics. He became professor of
music, Latin, and French at the Minor Seminary of the
Archdiocese of Barcelona and worked for the National
Secretariat for the Liturgy in Madrid. He became an active
member of Universa Laus, an international association
that promotes Church music, and he also participated in
conferences and study sessions throughout Europe and
the Americas. For many years he was pastor at Saint Mary
of the Sea, the famous gothic basilica located in the heart
of Barcelona.
His last gift to the world, the collection Da de Fiesta,
contains six entrance hymns for the various liturgical
seasons: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary
Time, as well as six Communion processionals with
brief, easily memorized refrains and verses arranged for
a soloist or small choir. All the lyrics are Scripture-based.

canto de reconciliacin de esta manera: El segundo
captulo del libro del Gnesis nos describe la tragedia
del ser humano, que no quiere reconocer su dependencia
del Dios creador. El primer pecado es el paradigma de
todos los pecados de la humanidad. Por eso en el estribillo
reconocemos que fuimos rebeldes rechazando su ley. Y
cuando buscbamos ser libres, camos en la esclavitud.
El inicio de la primera estrofa nos describe poticamente
las tentaciones a las que nos vemos sometidos. Sigue una
alusin a Cristo, Buen Pastor (Lucas 15, 45) que nos libera
de nuestras angustias. La segunda estrofa resume la tragedia
del hijo prdigo, que somos todos nosotros (Lucas 15,
1132). La msica est en tono menor para cantar sintiendo
dolor en el alma.
Alberto Taul naci en Sabadell, Espaa en una familia
de msicos. Desde muy temprana edad mostr inters por
la composicin de himnos religiosos y msica popular
regional. A los veinte aos ingres en el seminario y fue
ordenado sacerdote en 1961. Obtuvo licenciaturas en
teologa en la Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana, en canto
gregoriano y en otras disciplinas de la composicin musical.
Sus estudios lo llevaron a Italia, Alemania y Francia, por lo
que aprendi los idiomas de esos pases. Durante sus viajes,
recopilaba cantos y los traduca. Fue nombrado profesor
de msica, latn y francs del Seminario Menor de la
Arquidicesis de Barcelona y trabaj para el Secretariado
Nacional de Liturgia de Madrid; participaba en numerosos
congresos y sesiones de estudio en Europa y Amrica como
miembro del grupo Universa Laus, asociacin internacional
para el fomento de la msica de Iglesia. Durante muchos
aos fue prroco de Santa Mara del Mar, la hermosa y
singular baslica gtica ubicada en el corazn de Barcelona.
Su ltimo regalo al mundo, Da de Fiesta, contiene
seis himnos para la procesin de entrada durante cada
tiempo litrgico Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma, Pascua
y Tiempo Ordinario y seis procesionales de Comunin
con estribillos cortos y fciles, con estrofas que pueden ser
interpretadas por un solista o un pequeo coro. Los textos
estn basados en las Escrituras.

Ajaz se resisti y el Seor le dio esta seal: la virgen

Emmanuel, que quiere decir Dios-con-nosotros.
The Lord gave Ahaz this sign: the virgin shall be with

Jesus sent his disciples to get a donkey, which he rode into
Jerusalem. Many in the crowd spread cloaks and palm
branches before him.

La realidad pastoral hispana: compleja y nica

Cmo integrar a los jvenes en el ministerio?
How can we encourage more youth involvement?
La responsabilidad pastoral que todos compartimos como

lderes en la Iglesia catlica norteamericana es inmensa y
urgente. Las liturgias interesantes y atrayentes, congruentes
y relevantes pastoralmente nos dan la gran oportunidad de
dar la bienvenida a los jvenes hispanos en la Misa. Pero
cmo lo hacemos? Primero: Debemos reconocer y aceptar que existen dos diferentes grupos de juventud hispana
en los Estados Unidos: los inmigrantes recin llegados que
slo hablan espaol y los nacidos (o criados) en este pas
que hablan ingls o son bilinges. Estos dos grupos tienen
diferentes formas de expresar su fe y de adherirse a las tradiciones y a la cultura hispana. Una misa bilinge es la celebracin perfecta donde puede darse una interaccin cultural e
intercambio espiritual. Segundo: Debemos superar la nocin
de que es nuestro deber darle gusto a todos. Nuestro deber y
obligacin es ofrecer una autntica bienvenida en todo lo que
hacemos, fomentar un sentido de comunidad y ayudar a la
asamblea reunida a unir sus voces en canto y oracin.
Cmo ministros de msica podemos escucharlos y aprender a conocerlos. Ellos quieren ver nuestro compromiso.
Su-giero lo siguiente:
Inviten a algunos jvenes hispanos al coro o grupo
musical: Bsquenlos. Insstanles.
Ofrzcanles plumillas gratis para su guitarra
Engnchenlos con la msica!
Planifiquen con ellos (no para ellos).
Tambin nosotros necesitamos transformar nuestra forma
de pensar y de usar la msica bilinge con nuestra joven
feligresa bilinge. Sumrjanse en el repertorio actual de
msica litrgica contempornea bilinge. Investiguen lo
que sea de actualidad litrgica; estn preparados e informados! Una vez que tengan un ministerio de msica slido
que represente la comunidad a la que sirven, los jvenes
llegarn y participarn plena y alegremente.
The pastoral responsibility we as leaders share in the

U.S. Catholic Church is immense and pressing, yet we
oftentimes miss a great opportunity to truly welcome our
Hispanic youth at Mass when we dont make our liturgies
appealing and engaging, cohesive and pastorally relevant.
But how do we do it effectively? First, we must realize and
accept that there are two different groups of Hispanic
youth in the United States: the newly arrived, immigrant
Spanish speakers and the U.S.-born (or U.S.-raised)
bilingual/mostly English speakers. These two groups have
different needs and different ways of expressing their faith
and adhering to Hispanic traditions and culture. A bilingual
Mass is the perfect celebration in which this cultural interaction and spiritual exchange can happen. Secondly, we
must get past the notion that it is our duty and obligation
to please everyone. Our duty and obligation is to be truly
welcoming in everything that we do, to foster a sense of
community, and to help the gathered assembly unify their
voices in song and prayer.
As music ministers, we can listen and get to know our
young people better. They want to see our commitment.
Here are a few suggestions:
Invite young Hispanics to join the choir or music
ensemble. Seek them out.
Offer free guitar picks whatever it takes!
Enough planning for them its time to plan
with them.
We need to transform the way we think and the way we
do bilingual music for our young, bilingual assemblies.
Immerse yourselves in the current repertoire of contemporary bilingual liturgical music. Research the current
liturgical trends; be prepared and be informed! In my
experience, once you have a solid music ministry group
that is representative of the community it serves, the youth
will come and they WILL participate fully and joyfully.
