y 3z 7
z 4x 2
4. A relation R is defined on as follows:
a, b R c, d ad bc .
Is the relation (a) reflexive, (b) symmetric, (c) antisymmetric, (d) transitive?

5. Define electric intensity and potential at an electric
field. How are they related? The electric potential in
certain situation is found to depend on x only and is
given by V(x) = ax bx3; a, b are constants. Find the
position on the X-axis where the electric intensity is
zero.

What do you mean by electric dipole? Find an
expression for the force and torque acting on an
electric dipole when placed in a uniform electric
field.

6. State the Raoults law of relative lowering of vapour
pressure of solvent.
12 g of solid solute is dissolved in 90 g of water. At
100oC vapour pressure of the solution is 750 mm Hg.
Calculate the relative molecular mass of the solute.
(Assume the solute in water does not undergo
association or dissociation.)

For water, Kb = 0.52 oC/m, Kf = 1.86 oC/m.
20 g of glucose is dissilved in 100 g of water. (i) If it
is cooled to 10oC, find the mass of ice freezed out.
(ii) If it is heated to 105oC, find the mass of resulting
solution.

7. Deduce the relation between current density and drift
velocity. Also deduce Ohms law.

8. (i) State Gauss law in electrostatics and apply it to
show that the electric intensity inside a hollow
spherical charged conductor is zero.
(ii) The surface density of a positively charged long
vertical plate is Cm2. A metallic ball of mass M
and charge +q is attached to the plate by means of a
thread. Find the angle made by the thread with the
plate in equilibrium.
(iii) Two point charges +q and q are separated by a
distance x. Identify the zero potential surface for the
system.
