Adorno

Theodor W. Adorno
1903-1969
He was a German Marxist
who was a part of
Frankfurt school. He was
known for his critical

Idea 1:

The producers job is to make the

audience believe that the
characters and situations are like
real life
The construction behind it seems
invisible
Taking elements from everyday
life, constructing them to seem
like its real-life but are also
fictional and used as
entertainment for the audience
Films tend to rely on stereotypical
representations of young people
as a collective identity for them
As representations appear real in
films (through speech,
appearance etc.) this makes it
hard for people to distinguish

Idea 2:

Media has represented

people in a certain way
It gets repeated, leaving
less room for alternative
representations to think of,
they therefore start to see
these representations as
facts and reality.
Representations of young
people likely to reinforce
the stereotypes as these
representations are seen
across other media
platforms
Film is a commodity (only
to make money) so no
point of bringing in an
alternative representation

Show how these ideas relate to our case studies

here:
We can use the Shank film and discuss the representations that continue in
real life

Seeing an estate at the beginning that people may already be familiar

with so they may associate the behaviour going on there
The language used is what others might hear young people say and so
associate there behaviour with this also
