WATER AND OCCUPATION

In Malaysia, the intensity of rain is very high because this country was located at
equator line-middle of the earth. So, the quantity of water resources in Malaysia are abundant
and available throughout the year. They are estimated at 580 km3/year (average 1977-2001),
equivalent to more than 3,000 cubic meters per capita and year. In 1995, total water
withdrawal was estimated at 12.5 km3, or less than 3 percent of available resources. 76
percent of water was used for agriculture, 11 percent for municipal water supply and 13
percent for industries. Thus only less than 1% of available water resources is used for
drinking water supply.
But now, Malaysia have a critical water crisis such as lack of treated water, raw water
contamination levels are rising, the increase in population is not structured overdosed the
needed of water supply and the most important is lack of expertise in the field of hydrology
that can contribute and share knowledge on the issue.
Plus, river pollution in Malaysia is an environmental problem that is getting
significantly from time to time and so now they are no longer an effective solution that can
address the problem. Recently, the issue of water supply pipes stink happened around seven
areas in the Federal Territory and Selangor.
It stems from the inflow of foul black water (leachate) containing ammonia and
harmful substances other than landfill in Bukit Tagar into ruts creeks and rivers to get in
Selangor. Smelly water supply pipe has caused the people in these areas do not dare use it.
This issue reminds us how serious the problem of water pollution in our country so we cannot
underestimate it again but must take appropriate action to prevent water pollution worsened.
According to the study, about 70% of river pollution problem in Malaysia is due to the
disposal of waste and sewage. Removal of rubbish, domestic waste from residential areas,
villages, squatters and other settlements has caused the river water quality is affected. The use
of raw water quality cannot cause harm to humans. For example, E-coli bacteria, worm
nematodes, and microbes resulting from the disposal of animal waste into the river would
carry dangerous diseases such as hepatitis, cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever and leprosy.
Disposal of animal waste are not systematically prevalent in our country, especially in the

state of Negeri Sembilan and Selangor. This shows that our society is still a lack of civic
consciousness in the understanding of the conservation and restoration of the environment.
Following the total water demand by consumers increasing compared with the raw
water quality has declined, this imbalance will eventually lead to a shortage of raw water
resources are suitable and safe can be supplied to the public, as one of the major problems
faced by the country.
Growing water shortages occur in our country, especially in Negeri Sembilan who
often experience water rationing. Therefore, in my opinion, the responsibility for solving this
problem should not be shouldered by one party alone but society must also cooperate with the
government, especially in terms of public attitudes that do not clean up the river, so the
rehabilitation and management of the river can be done continuously to ensure perfection on
river regime and its surroundings. This problem become difficult to solve when the scope of
occupation needed for this issues especially hydrology field is small and undemand in this
country.
In resolving issues related to the water crisis, the roots of the occurrence of problems
such as pollution of water resources, water use for waste, destruction of watersheds and water
resources management unwise noteworthy and handled in advance so that the solution is
taken more inclusive and effective for long periods of time. In addition, law enforcement
alone is not enough, especially in terms of protection of the river into the heart of the matter
in the water supply source. Instead all parties, including government, non-government
organizations, community groups and individuals have played a direct role in addressing the
problem of pollution of water resources will continue to be maintained.
If there is no integrated approach implemented in the protection of water resources, it
is possible the country will face a serious water crisis within 25 to 30 years. Imagine what
will happen if this situation occurs? Obviously other problems will also arise because we are
very dependent on the water resources in implementing each of our daily activities.
Thus, the fact that water is an essential element of life and resources that are very
sensitive to pollution, then we should take the initiative to get the maximum possible to
prevent resources from extinction. One important strategy to ensure that water resources be
safeguarded by all parties is to raise the level of public awareness and love for the
environment.

This is consistent with the role of humans created as caliph or ruler specially chosen
by God to bear a great responsibility in the face of the earth. In this context, the role of men is
not just to use what's there alone, but more than that (i.e. the need to manage all the resources
that are endowed with the best possible, while improving the quality of the resources
concerned).
Allah said in Surah Hud , verse 61 which means : "...Dialah yang menjadikan kamu
daripada bahan-bahan bumi serta menghendaki kamu memakmurkannya"
This paragraph is described that the man was to dominate and prosperity in the world. So in
the context of this relationship, efforts to conserve and develop water resources is an integral
part of the process of prospering demanded by Allah SWT.
As a conclusion, we can conclude that water and occupation is related each other and
give a benefits to humans and other living things. Water is the most important resources in the
world but we as a human take it lightly.
