SYSTEM DESIGN DESCRIPTION

RAW WATER SYSTEM
1.0

INTRODUCTION
This document presents a detailed description of the Raw Water System for Bauang Diesel Power
Plant. This includes the system functions, criteria requirements, details of system components,
controls and instrumentation, operating modes, safety precautions, and maintenance requirements of
the system.

1.1

System Functions
The Raw Water System (circuit 16) provides the water requirement of the whole plant complex.
The system supplies raw water for processing to the Drinking/Domestic Water System, Water
Treatment and Make-up Water System and to the Fire Fighting Water System. The system is shown
in the Flow Diagram - Water Supply System, Appendix 7.1.

1.2

Criteria Requirements
The raw water is to be supplied at a pressure of 2-6 bars and to be stored in the cistern (0-16V6-0)
which serves as a buffer tank.
The inlet of the buffer tank is to be fitted with a float valve that guarantees the optimal level to be
kept. All water piping shall be executed according to the provisions of the National Plumbing Codes
of the Philippines.
All underground pipes are of PVC materials and all expose pipes are of G.I. materials.

1.3

Summary Description of the System

The Raw Water System is designed to provide the water requirement of the plant complex. The
system is composed of the following major equipment:
a.
Deepwell Pump Nos. 1-4 (located in Bo. Bucayab)
b.
Deepwell Pump Nos. 1-3 (within plant complex)
c.
Raw Water Tank
d.
Transfer Pumps
e.
Cistern
The four deepwell pumps get its suction from a shallow well located in Bo. Bucayab which is
approximately 7 kms. from the plant complex. The Bucayab deepwell pumps are manually or
automatically operated through its remote control panel. Operation of these pumps depend on the
water level of the raw water tank.

The steel cylindrical raw water tank stores the water delivered by the deepwell pumps. This tank is
provided with two transfer pumps (one is in service, the other on stand by). The transfer pumps
which are manually operated, feed a cistern inside the plant complex. When the water level of the
cistern is at desired level, the information is relayed at the Bucayab pump station through radio
transceiver to stop the operation of the transfer pump. Also, the transfer pump automatically stop
when the raw water tank is at low level.
When the water level of the cistern is at low level, the information is also relayed at the Bucayab
pump station through radio transceiver to start the pump.
In case of power failure at the transfer pump station, a diesel-generator set is on stand-by to provide
electricity for continuous delivery of raw water to the plant complex.
The three deepwell pumps are located in the Power Plant Complex and discharge water directly to
the cistern. These are operated by a local and remote control panel on "LOCAL", "REMOTE", and
"AUTO" mode.

Pipings and Valves

Piping and valves are based on a system design pressure of 150 psig. From deepwell Pumps
#1 and #2 to cistern, a 50 mm. diameter pipe is installed with 50 mm. diameter gate valves.
Also, a 50 mm. diameter pipe and 50 mm. diameter gate valves are installed for Deepwell
Pumps #2 and #3 going to the elevated water tank. From Bucayab, a 150 mm. diameter
PVC pipes with 150 mm. globe valves are used to supply water from the Bucayab transfer
pump to the cistern.

2.2.2

Controls
The Bucayab transfer pumps are provided with the START/STOP lever switch at the control
panel. Indicating lamps are provided in the control panel to monitor the status of the pumps.
The deepwell pumps (Bucayab) are provided with changeover switch to designate the lead
pumps during automatic operation or to operate the pumps in manual operation.
The deepwell pumps at the plant complex is controlled by the local and remote control panel.
The remote control panel is located inside the pumphouse building and are provided with
control mode selector switch (LOCAL-REMOTE-AUTO); START-STOP push button
switches and START-STOP indicating lights.
The Local Control Panel is located individually beside the deepwell pumps and are provided
by "ON-OFF" selector switch, START-STOP push button switch and indicating lights.
When the remote control panel selector switch is positioned at "Local", the pumps could be
operated at local control box. When the selector switch is positioned at "Remote" the pumps
could be operated at remote control panel. When the selector switch is in "Auto" position,
the operation depend on the water level of the elevated water tank.

2.2.3

Alarms
Alarm lamps are provided in the control cubicle (located at Fire Fighting Plant) to monitor
the water level at the cistern.

MODES OF OPERATION

3.1

Start-up
Prior to placing the system on line, all equipment associated with the Raw Water System are
prepared for service. All system valves should be in open position. Place the selector switch in the
deepwell pumps control panel to AUTO position and the transfer pumps to MANUAL position.

3.2

Normal Operation

3.3

Under normal operating conditions, the deepwell pumps operate automatically depending on the
water level in the raw water tank and the transfer pumps are operated manually (depending on the
water level at the cistern) upon request of the plant operator relayed through radio transciever.
Shutdown
Depending on the system equipment's maintenance requirements, the pumps should be shutdown one
at a time so as not to hamper the delivery of water to the plant complex.

4.0

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Although there are no unusual precautions that need to be taken, the operators need to understand
the functions and controls of the equipment.

5.0

MAINTENANCE
A scheduled program of testing and inspection should be maintained to ensure that all system
components and their control system are in good working condition.
