Waterproof Drawstring Bag Pattern

CUT:
4 9 diameter circles
1 of main fabric
1 of coordinating fabric
1 of extra firm interfacing
1 of vinyl*
1 15 x 27 rectangle of main fabric for the bag
1 14 x 27 vinyl* for the lining
2 12 x 2 strips of coordinating fabric for the drawstring cases
2 44 x 1 strips of main fabric for drawstrings, or purchase cording if you prefer
MAIN BAG:
For finished edges, press a 1/8 hem toward the wrong side along the bottom and top (lengthwise) of the bag.
Turn the hem in 1/8 again and press. Stitch closely to the edge.
DRAWSTRING CASES:
Press 1/4 toward wrong side on one end of each strip (for encasing raw edges). Fold each 12 strip in half
lengthwise, right sides together. Sew 1/4 seam along the length and the end of each strip that was NOT
folded and pressed; turn. Stitch closely to the edge of the pressed down open end.
Measure down 2 from the top of the bag and align each casing 1 from each side of the bag. Stitch closely
along each edge lengthwise to form the drawstring case.
Fold the main fabric piece right sides together to form a cylinder and sew a 1/2 seam.
BOTTOM CIRCLES:
Sew the fabric circles right sides together with the interfacing on the wrong side of either one. Leave an
opening for turning; turn, tuck fabric inside manipulating into a circle; blind or slip stitch. Baste the circle to the
bottom inside of the bag (right sides together). Stitch in place with a 1/4 seam; turn right side out and press if
needed.
VINYL LINER:
Fold the vinyl liner piece to form a cylinder and sew a 1/2 seam. Attach the vinyl bottom circle to the bottom
of the liner in the same manner as above.
Turn down the top of the bag (to just above the drawstring cases) making sure to catch a sufficient amount of
the vinyl liner; baste or pin in place; stitch.
DRAWSTRINGS:
Press a 1/4 hem to each end of each drawstring strip; fold each drawstring strip in half lengthwise, WRONG
sides together and press. Open up and fold each side of the strip lengthwise inward toward the center crease.
Fold both sides together, press, then stitch closely along the folded edges. Clamp a safety pin to the end of
one drawstring (to help in pulling through the casing). Run the drawstring into the opening of the casing on the
right side of the bag all the way through to the other casing, ending up on the right side of the bag but coming
out of the other casing. Repeat on the left side. Tie a little knot to pair each set. Pull outward to cinch. Done
and done!

*I simply bought a $2 shower curtain liner (frosted the clear vinyl is sticky and would not feed through my machine).
