Introduction
Source transformation is another tool for simplifying circuits.
A source transformation is the process of replacing a voltage
source vs in series with a resistor R by a current source is in
parallel with a resistor R, or vice versa

Thevenins Theorem
Thevenins theorem states that a linear two-terminal circuit can be replaced by
an equivalent circuit consisting of a voltage source VTh in series with a resistor
RTh , where VTh is the open-circuit voltage at the terminals and RTh is the input
or equivalent resistance at the terminals when the independent sources are turned
off.

Examples
Find the Thevenin equivalent circuit of the
circuit shown, to the left of the terminals ab. Then find the current through RL = 6,
16, and 36
RTh = 4 k12 + 1 = 4
32 + 4i1 + 12(i1 i2 ) =
0, i2 = 2 A i1 = 0.5 A
Thus, VTh = 12(i1 i2 ) =
30 V

4+RL

= 3, 1.5, and 0.75 A

for RL = 6, 16, and 36 respectively.
