Digital Education Project in

South Korea
The Qualcomm Wireless Reach initiative and the Digital Textbook
Association are conducting an innovative digital education service with
4G tablet PCs with first grade students at Saetbyeol Middle School in a
metropolitan area of Gyonggi-do, South Korea.

2014 Statistics
Life expectancy: 79.8 years
Population: 49 Million (est.)
GDP per capita: US$33,200 (2013
est.)
Mobile penetration: 108.1% (est.)
Sources: CIA World Factbook (https://www.cia.
gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook);
Mobile penetration data provided by Informa UK
Limited and based on market intelligence.

The project presents an exemplar model for digital education,

instructional strategies, and future learning platforms in Korea; it
is aligned with the Korean Governments SMART digital education
initiative, which recognizes the correlation between educational
progress and technology development and recommends the integration
of these tools into the educational field.
The project offers interactive learning environments that help students
enhance self-directed learning ability.
Challenge
Educational environments in Korea are relatively advanced, yet few students receive
the benefits of rapidly-evolving digital technologies.
Teachers are often willing to learn how to implement mobile in teaching and learning
but need full professional development support.
Students need to understand how to better take advantage of the wireless devices
to develop self-directed learning habits.
Parents can sometimes have a negative perception of the use of digital devices in
education.

Wireless devices gave students

the opportunity to improve their
understanding of the lessons. Parents
were also satisfied with the flipped
classroom method and they trusted
teachers and the school.
Mr. Yang, Teacher

Solution
Provide 80 students and 20 teachers with Samsung Galaxy 8.6 tablets powered by
Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and 4G/LTE access for 24/7 access.
Establish environments where students enhance their self-directed learning ability
and facilitate the teachers use of digital resources in education.
Work with teachers on lesson plans, instructional methods, professional development
tools and digital learning materials for active digital-based innovative education.

Technology
AllJoyn, an open source software project from the AllSeen Alliance, a cross-industry
collaboration to facilitate interactions between teachers and students.
Qualcomm Vuforia mobile vision platform.
OnTeacher content platform with over 120,000 learning content modules.
4G/LTE Broadband connectivity via Korea Telecoms network.

Impact
During the projects pilot phase there were marked increases in teacher confidence
in activity instruction using the devices.
Teachers also increased the amount of time spent on the devices for educational
purposes from 30 minutes a day to 95 minutes a day.
Students familiarized themselves with the use of wireless devices for learning,
going from 30 minutes each day to 52 minutes each day outside of school and were
observed to be more engaged in class participation in school.
Parents have become more open to using and supporting technology for learning
and positive attitudes towards wireless devices for education have increased.
