Identification of Learning Problem

Target Audience:
My target audience will be third students in Mrs. Robinsons class. All of the students know how
to use a computer and mouse, but their experience level varies somewhat. Student demographics
show the majority of students being Caucasian, with two Asian, and three African American as
well. The socioeconomic background finds more than fifty-percent of the students coming from
households with two working parents.
Learning Problem:
As students progress through their educational careers, the necessity of online research becomes
greater. Starting in elementary school, students must be taught the differences between copyright,
fair use, and plagiarism. Once students know these important terms, they must also be taught
how to appropriately paraphrase and cite sources. Students also need to be taught how to check
their own work for plagiarism before they submit the work for evaluation.
Instructional Goals:
Learners will be able to discuss and define terms associated with digital citizenship
Learners will be able to list the consequences for violating copyright laws
Learners will be able to search the internet for information, summarize, and cite the sources
General Learner Characteristics:
The primary source of demographic information was provided by the teacher, while secondary
information came from student observation and interviews. The group of learners are in the third
grade in Effingham County. The group is comprised of twenty-two regular education students.
There are ten boys and thirteen girls in the group.

Entry Characteristics:
Student ability levels was determined through observations and interviews. The student reading
levels of range from the second grade to above grade level. All students can use a computer to
log into the internet.
Prior Experience:
All students have received prior instruction in gathering information using the computer, and
internet. Very few students could explain what plagiarism is. All of the students need help with
rewording of information for their research.
Attitude toward Academics:
The students have expressed excitement in using the internet for research. All students indicate
that they understand and have some experience with researching information for assignments.
The majority of student experience with researching comes from physical medium such as
books, magazines, and newspapers.
Task Analysis
I used a topic analysis for these lessons. The topic analysis outline identifies the definitions,
consequences of violating copyright laws, and how to appropriately paraphrase and cite, and
ends with the tools students can use to check their work for plagiarism. As a teacher, it is
important that I teach my students what these concepts mean and the consequences associated
involved with not knowing.

Formative Evaluation Plan

The purpose of evaluation plan will be to evaluate how well the learning module is at achieving
the objectives as well as the effectiveness of the materials used. The evaluation plan will require
an expert review of organization and flow, accuracy of content, readability, representation of
current best practices, and overall effectiveness. I will review all feedback from students and
peer reviews, making appropriate changes as needed. At the end of the module learners will
complete an online survey using checklist, rating scales and short answer questions. Once all
evidence has been gathered, the module and materials will be analyzed for possible changes.
Evaluation Plan
Learner evaluation included How we do you know plagiarism quiz, What are the
Consequences? worksheet, and their Womens History Month project. At the end of the unit, learners
will also complete a survey.
