UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA

PRACTICAL 8
OBJECTIVE:
1. To produce Soil Adjusted Vegetation Indices (SAVI) maps
IN THIS PRACTICAL YOU WILL LEARN TO DO FOLLOWING:
Able
1.
2.
3.

to:
Calculate SAVI using Landsat image
Assess the vegetation density based using SAVI
Produce vegetation density map

STEP:
Part A: Calculating the SAVI using EASI Modeling in Focus
1. First, Open Focus program > From the File menu, click Open and choose
the image.
2. From the Layer menu, select Add Layer Wizard > select RGB > Next >
select 4 > 3 > 2 and Click Finish.
3. In the Focus toolbar, click the Enhancements arrow and select Linear
4. From the Tools menu, select EASI Modeling. The EASI Modeling window
opens.
5. From the Input File, select image.pix
6. In the EASI Modeling dialog box, enter the following model:
SAVI = (NIR band RED band)* (1 + L)
(NIR band + RED band + L)
Where;

%i = empty channel for output (in 32 bit real channel)

%x = NIR band
%y = Red band
L = Optimal adjustment factor (0.5 or 0.25)
X and Y band can be found based on band number in Landsat TM image;

7. Enter the algorithm in EASI Modelling for L= 0.5.

8. Click Run.
9. The model will be executed and the results of SAVI were saved to output
channel in the image file and displayed in the Focus view area.
10.
Then, repeat steps 1 to 9 for L = 0.25
Part B: Pseudo-Color Tables (PCT) Editing
1. First, open file in Focus.
2. Click the Add Layer Wizard > Pseudocolored channel > click the
channel that you choose for EASI Modeling > Finish.
3. Then in the maps tree, right click at the file layer. Select Edit PCT. PCT
Editing window will opens.
4. Then, the index was grouped according to desired range.
5. Each of the range was assigned with different color.
6. Click at the color at PCT Editing > choose the color at Basic Colors >
Click Apply
7. Repeat step 7 until all the colors at PCT Editing were group based on the
color range.

Part C: Soil Erosivity Map

1. First, open file in Focus.
2. Click the Add Layer Wizard > Pseudocolored channel > click the
channel that you choose for EASI Modeling > Finish.
3. Each type of class was assigned with different color [unwanted pixel (<
-0.0), high erosivity (0.0 < H > 0.1), medium erosivity (0.2 < M >
0.3) and lastly low erosivity (0.4 < L > 0.5)]
4. The color was edited by using Edit PCT steps. In the maps tree, right click
at the file layer. Select Edit PCT.
5. Edit your range values based on low, medium and high erosivity.
6. Click at the color at PCT Editing > choose the color at Basic Colors >
Click Apply
7. Repeat step 7 until all the colors at PCT Editing were group based on the
color range.
PRACTICAL HIGHLIGHT

1. Justify the use of optimal adjustment factor, L (L= 0.5 and L = 0.25)?
2. Based on the produced SAVI mapping, visually analyze and assigned
classed produced for each (L = 0.5 and L = 0.25).
3. Analyzed the soil erosivity map for (L = 0.5 and L = 0.25).
4. Generalize the use of SAVI and soil erossivity index in deforestation
problem
