The cartoon which was published in the __________ of ________________ depicts a

transgender man declaring to the police that wi nuh gunman meaning they do not commit
crime. This carton is ambiguous, it contradicts the popular Jamaican perspective that effeminate
men and or homosexuals are maama man and the stereotypes of male homosexuals as being
weak and effeminate. The cartoon is therefore a contradiction; that is, transgendered men and or
homosexuals behave like women and women are not usually associated with crime. The cartoon
suggests that this transgender person may be a perpetrator as well as a victim of crime.
There has been much debate about violence against the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and
transgender (LGBT) in Jamaica; in fact Jamaica has been described by some international
human-rights groups as the most homophobic place on Earth because of a perceived high level of
violent crime directed at LGBT people. However, the police have time and again declared in
numerous reports in the media that there is no evidence showing members of the LGBT
community encountering higher violent incidents than other members of the public.
Professor Anthony Harriott Political Sociologist at the University of the West Indies
purport that every Jamaican is susceptible to violence. He further asserts that from his studies of
homicides, there is nothing extraordinary about the killings of gays to the extent that it can be
determined from the information in the police records that the victim was gay. In fact, it is
widely believed that crime is not directed at the LGBT by straight people or out of homophobia
but the crime committed in that community is gay against gay. Former Assistant Commissioner
of Police Les Green (at the time a senior member of the police force known for integrity and
truth-speaking), has been quoted in the media as saying "All of those murders that I have
investigated have been in relationships and are victims of gay attacks, domestic situations; and
of the murders of gay men he had investigated, only one was not committed by a member of the
gay community - "That was Steve Harvey and that case was a robbery,"
The police have confirmed the position of a vast number of Jamaicans that were not
really violent homophobes as portrayed by the local and international LGBT communities; of
which there is little evidence to support the claim. What the majority of Jamaicans fight against
the LGBT community in Jamaica is the brazen displays of homosexuality in its various styles.
Jamaica is not a country where sex and sexually explicit behaviour are openly displayed or
tolerated, whether it involves heterosexuals or homosexuals. For example, couples kissing or

caressing openly are not frequently seen in Jamaica. That is just not a part of our culture. There is
indeed a cultural intolerance towards LGBT; but there are person who have chosen that lifestyle
and practise their choices with responsibility and as a result they have not been subjected to any
major discrimination from straight people.
2) The other thoughts which the cartoon evoked is from the headlined depicted in the
drawing Gays are responsible for 80% - 90% of organized crime. Police.
Senior Superintendent Fitz Bailey had announced that young gay men were behind most
organised crime in Jamaica. Bailey never said anything about organized crime. He was very
specific, he was talking about the Lottery Scam and the high number of homosexuals implicated
in it.
