Dear Eriends,

,June 1952
'

Last Lord's Day, we and tLe Hergets took a long, long trail a-wind-

Ing high above the beautiful North coast of the island, our dest
ination being a little church recently established by native evan
gelist C.A, lifcrris . We bumped along as far as our faithful car
could safely take us, and then proceeded the last two miles on foot.
Since the trail was a good one most of the v/ay, vre enjoyed the walk,
stopDing occasionally to drink in the beauty of the scene below.

There, against the background of the incredibly blue Caribbean, the

white breakers dashed high against rugged cliffs or rolled in end
less succession uuon white sand beaches.

The people were already singing when we reached the little thatched
booth. They greeted us vra.rraly and eagerly, proudly telling us that
we were the first white people ever to enter their district. Eight
souls accepted Christ that day.

The Summer term at the Jamaica Blhle Seminary will ^oon be half
over. V/e started the term with seventeen stiidents, but, nov/ have
twelve. We dismissed the others for \rarioup' reasons, for vre are try

ing to kee'^ the school up to as high v morol, s^niritual, and schol

astic level as "nospihlo.

Recently all twelve students received

thorough nhysical examinations.

Four were found to have ^malaria

four have inactive Syphilis (or have .had Yaws--it's hard to tell),
tv/o have hernias, others have bad teeth, athlete's foot, etc. So

we arc doing our best to get them into better shape physically
while we impart unto them the Word of*Life,

Last month our Heavenly Father granted 66 baptized into Christ in

Jamaica.

Grod bless you for your help in this work.

Yours and His,
Woodrow and Marjorie Phillj^^s

Dear Brother McFarland,

Enclosed are the re^uepted" ruestion^W.res concerninf^ the

influences etc. leedin^: to life-v/ork recruits. Vie did not

fill in and send the financial -uestionnairo Because in our

case it would have been a little misleadinf^.

V/e do receive
adequate support but not entirely in the "living-link"
method. Our three children are each "living-links" of

churches in the U.S. receiving $30.00 a month per child.

Neither my wife no myself have any living link church
although we would desire one but did not campaign in that
manner. Rather we used pledge cards and in that method from

many churches and individuals receive well over $100.00

a piece per month toward our living.

Iiov/ever we use only

'.^100,00 a month a piece for living expenses and the remainder

goes into the churches and semiuary here in Jamaica.
In total we and oui* children receive from the churches in

American an average of over .^^500.00 a month for living and

work. (Last year 1951 including hurricane gifts and one

month's touring in the States oxir incorae was over All,000.00,

but it will probably be arround $7iOODDO this year)
As to needs: a family in Jamaica must have '^^100.00 per month
per adult member and '^^0.00 for each child and you will have
little or nothinp- I'^ft over in the way of savinp-s. Prices
have soared incrediblv in this island since the close of the

war.

In general we must also supaort the school, native

ministers, a building "nrorram etc. in con.iunction with Fream*s

and Hergets. We work side by side to that end with all funds
above our immediate livings.

We all believe your work and effort^ on our behalf (all^

independent missions) is a real blessing and a worth while

service

The Lord continues to bless \is here.

In May 48 more were

A MIND TO WORK

The last visit we made to the church at Mount Pleasant Marjorie

declared to be her LAST. The road was steep and rocky, overlooking
the valley far below as it wound up the mountainside. However, last
Sunday we went again, to participate in the first service in their

new building. The people had sacrificed and worked diligently, and,
except for the zinc roofing had paid for all of it themselves.
rejoiced in these people who had a

hesitated to ask for our help
JAMAICA'S BLOOD BROTHERHOOD

You know, sometimes we long

for the fellowship of Christians

who are clean, white, intelligent,

and whose ways we understand. But

then we cling to the grand thought

of our*"Blood Brotherhood" in

Christ, where all are "whiter

than snow", where there is neither
Jew nor Greek, bond nor free
BROaHERHOOD

but all are "one man in Christ

Jesus'i

We remember that Christ bids US carry the gospel to all neo-

pie whether lovely or unlovely, wise or foolish. Therefore we are

ready, as was Paul the anostle, to breach the Word to these people.
JAMAICA BIBLE SEMINARY

The walls of the new seminary building are steadily going up.
This being vacation month, there will be more time for work on them.
We are pleased with the progress being made, and are sure you would
bo too. We need your constant prayers that we might build for Christ
and His church.
OURSELVES

All of us are fine and although the summer heat is sometimes

uncomfortable we feel good and thank God for health and strength to
labor for Christ. We are looking forward to a new member of the fam

ily in November, and hoping, too, that some church will be looking

for a very tiny "Living Link", at about the same time. $30*00 a

month would provide complete support for our expected "Little Miss

ionary"
.
YOU

Friends, your prayer ministry for us is vital, and your partnerin Jamaica through offerings is our lifeline for preaching Christ
here. Each gift is thankfullv received. Please continue to back us
up as we serve the Saviour in Jamaica.

Dear Friends,

Monday, October 6, 1952

Woodrow suffered a heart attack Thursday morning,

October 2. He is now home from the hospital, but cannot
resume his work for at least one month. The doctor says

that there is no permanent organic injury, but that the

attack was brought on by overwork, nervous strain, and fatigue.

Please pray.

Dear Christian Friends,

THE GLORY OP GOD

V/e stood last Monday evening on the crest of that narrow

neck of land called the "Palisadoes" which encloses Kingston harbour.

From our viewpoint, we could see the city of Port Royal at the harbour

entrance, a century ago the fabulous pirate stronghold of Sir Henry

Morgans. To our rif?ht, we could see the li/rhts of infamous Kingston as
they rapidly multinlied and sent shimmering beams across the water.

Then, as the sun dinned beneath the horizon beyond the Palisadoes, we
watcned the whole landscane become crowned with glory as the Master

Artist, upon the canvas of the blue Caribbean and tho Western sky,
painted a flaming tropical sxuiset# How we rejoiced in this magnifi
cent testimony of the heavens to the glory of God I
BIBLE REVIVAL

Soon our large "Bible

19th. V/o have prepared hand

homes in tho district, and are

praying for a fruitful meeting.

Woodrow will do the preaching,
student-Allen Ross will load the

singing, and tho "Living for

Jesus" young people*s group will bring the special music. We lo^ "to
snatch many tender and longing hearts from the burning and send them
rejocing along the Way of Life.
NIMTY-TWO BAPTIZED

We rejoice to report a record number of baptisms92 during

the month of August. These are mostly the result of the faithful

preaching of native preachers in the country churches.

A CHAl^INBL OF BIESSIIIG

Friends. YOU are essential to this missionary enterprise,

for only through you does God channel His provision for us hero in

Dear Brother l^lacBarland:

Mrs Fream told me that she wrote you a letter last week
and mentioned \7oodrow*s heart attack. I have meant to write,

but have bfeen busy /getting out a newsletter to our Tnailine;

list. Enclosed is a copy of our nev/sletter and the little
insertion we added.

V/oodrow must still rest in bed most of the time,

gradually'" getting un a little each day. He feels some

tiprhtness in his chest yet at times, but otherwise feels

all right. Hov/ever, the doctor warned him thet any sudden

erertlon miaht bring on another attack.' His heart has not

been damaged, but weakened, "^ut with care can te brought back
to normal within a year or two.

Until then he must lim3.t

his activities to teachinp, preacblnp-, and llfrht work. No

more visits to country churches, and no more laying cement
blocks*. V/e are trying to adjust ourselves to this new scheme

of tilings, and believe that he still can do a good work here.

We requewt prayer.

All of the missionaries here appreciate the work and

promotion you are doing for the cause of missions. We will

be glad to see Horizons again a more missionary paper with
a fuller news coverage, but appreciate your difficulties at
this time.

G-od bless you.

Dear Brother MacFarland:

I wanted

to ha-re the latest news concerninp; V/oodrow.

I wrote 70U a oonnie of weeks a^o that he had had a

heart attack.

At that tine, the doctor didn't feel it

was too serious since there seemed to T)e no in.lury to

his heart, A later cardiop;ranh showed, however, that
his heart muscle had been damaged. He had another

less severe attack v/ednesday night (22nd), and so is

back in the hospital, this time for several weeks. V/e
certainly need the prayers of all the brethren, as
well as their continued financial backing, \/ith him

laid aside, I have to take care of things as best as

I can. Our baby is due very soon now, so you can
appreciateour need for strength beyond our own. But

in'spite of this, our hearts are rejoicing in G-od's

mercies, and can truly say, "Though Ha slay me, yet
will I trust Him." He has never betrayed o\xr trust.

If you print any of this, I hope you can make it a

trifle more coherent*.

God bless your ministry there, brother.

It means a

JAMAICA NEWS LETTER OF THE PHILLIPS FAMILY

DECEMBER 1952
H/VLF-WAY-TREE P.O. JAMAICA B.W.I.
DEAR CHRISTL'lN FRIENDS:

AS ANOTHER YEAR COMES TO ITS CLOSE we are amazed

when v/e count the many blessings which our God in

His infinite mercy has showered out upon us. We are

unxTOrthy of His goodness, yet, with the angels and

shepherds of old we raise our voices in thanksgiving
for His boundless love,

IT IS OUR PRAYER that in 1953 we can be used more

effectively for Christ in Jamaica, You by your

gifts, prayers, and encouragement have enabled us to

preach Christ in spite of many difficulties. You
have provided the means for clothing many vdio were

naked, feeding some who vrere hungry, teaching hmdreds who were imtaught, and making Christ live in
the li'^es of scores who were lost, hopeless and helpless in sin,

THE GOSPEL IS STILL GOD'S POWER unto salvation for all men. God is not willing that

any should perish and we have seen the* gospel transform lives in Jamaica. Over fivehundred have been baptised into Christ, many have put sin out of their lives by true

repentance, homes have been united by the Good News, new churches have been estab
lished and in all we humbly pray that Christ has been exalted as King of kings and
Lord of lords.

CHRISTM\S IS Fi\R DIFFERENT in Jamaica than in our own homeland. Poverty, which is

never far away in Jamaica seems even closer during the Christmas season. Men who

would not steal at any other time of the year simply cannot^watch while their child
ren go hungry at Christmas time and extra polic protection is all that keeps every

home from being rifled. Crowds fill the streets demanding work, political unrest

reaches its height, the ancient "John Canoe" dancers with all their sensua^, heathen
rites from African beginnings hold fifll away. The
Christ of God is often forgotten and certainly there
is no "Peace on earth and Good will among men," Will

you earnestly pray with us that God will have his

way with these people?

WE HAVE GOOD NEWS. Marjorie Carol Phillips arrived

November 21, 1952 at about ten o-* clock in the morn
ing, She weighed six pounds eight ounces and we are
already very proud of our new daughter. Both Marjorie and baby Carol are doing fine, and both send
their love to all of you in America, Marjorie Carol
is looking for a "Living Link" and her parents are
praying that some church will want her for their own
"Little Missionary."

JAMiiICA CHRISTMAS SCEI^E
