Testing by manually setting the voltage and current values

This program section allows the testing
of distance relays (both phase and
groundfault elements) in the conventional manner by manually setting the
voltages, currents and respective phase
angles (Fig. 2). The settings can either be
specified numerically or directly varied
with the mouse in the vector diagram.
The adjusted values can either be injected as steady state or as a shot (a
dynamic test which includes a dc offset
simulation and gives control of fault incidence angle). For a shot, all contact state
changes at all binary inputs are timed and
logged. The vectors can be linked to a
fault simulation model. The adjustment of
the vectors is then constrained by the
limits of a specific fault (all ground and
phase faults can be simulated). The operating characteristic of current differential
relays can also be tested in this program
section.

Fig. 2
Vector diagram program section

Manual testing in the impedance diagram

This program section allows the testing
of impedance characteristics (both phase
and groundfault) of distance relays in
the R/X diagram in a quick and easy way
(Fig. 3). The desired fault impedance is
selected either numerically or by a
mouse click in the impedance diagram.
The software calculates the corresponding voltages and currents using a network fault model. These voltages and
currents can then be injected as a shot
or can be viewed by changing over into
the vector diagram program section.

Automatic testing in the impedance
diagram
The zone characteristics can be determined quickly using the automatic function in the impedance diagram. Based on
the method of testing along a straight
line in the impedance diagram, the software automatically follows through a sequence of individual test lines. These test
lines can be rotated around a user specified point in the impedance diagram or
can be shifted parallel to each other at a
specified angle. Along a test line the software determines the reaches of the individual zones (Fig. 4) using a speedoptimized search algorithm. In just a few
minutes the complete zone settings can
be verified.

Fig. 4
Impedance diagram program section, automatic test

Testing of the automatic reclosing

function
The program section for the testing of
the automatic reclose function (ARC) is
structured similarly to that of the impedance diagram. It has been extended by
the specification of the reclaim time, the
type of reclosure (successful or unsuccessful) and the number of shots to be
simulated. Fig. 5 shows the graphical display of the binary contact sequences of
an unsuccessful ARC simulation. This
graphical display of binary contact sequences is available in the vector diagram, impedance diagram and the ARC
function program sections.

Testing in the timegrading diagram
(Z/t diagram)
This program section is used for the
manual and/or automatic testing of time
grading characteristics of distance relays
in the impedance/time diagram along an
userdefined test line. The automatic test
utilizes the same speed optimized search
algorithm as implemented in the impedance diagram to determine the reaches
and tripping times of the individual zones.
If the impedance zones of the test object
are specified, the results are evaluated
according to the set tolerances. Fig. 6
shows the result of an automatic test at
the line angle.

Fig. 6
Z/t diagram program section

Automatic recording of starter characteristics

This program section allows the quick
testing of the starter characteristics of
relays (overcurrent, voltage supervised
overcurrent or underimpedance starters).
According to user specified parameters,
the software automatically sweeps the
current(s) at different voltage values and
determines the point at which the
pickup and the dropout of the relay occurs. In the automatic mode, a speed optimized search algorithm is utilized to
minimize testing times. Fig. 7 shows the
result of a voltage controlled overcurrent
starter.

Definition of test objects
Here the theoretical characteristics and
settings of a relay can be entered. This,
in combination with the previously described program sections, eliminates the
need for user programmed test files. The
settings and characteristics can either be
entered manually (independent of relay
manufacturers) or, for numerical distance
relays, can be loaded from the setting
software of various relay manufacturers
via the RIO file interface. When manually
entering the relay characteristics, the
user can combine lines, circles and circle
segments to construct any common impedance characteristic (e.g. mho, lens,
quadrilateral or any other geometric
shape) see Fig. 8.

Fig. 8
Test object definition screen

Generation of automatic test sequences

In this program part the user can generate automatic test sequences with ease.
A test sequence consists of a list of separate test steps. The test steps are defined in screens which are similar to the
program parts of the distance relays
module in structure and function (vector
diagram, impedance plane, Z/t diagram,
etc.). During automatic execution of the
generated sequence, the individual test
steps are carried out line by line in the
signal processor. No programming knowledge is necessary to generate or run a
test sequence. Fig. 9 shows the configuration screen for automatic test sequences. A test sequence for an automatic commissioning test is shown.

Playing back transient signals
This program section allows the loading,
processing, saving and playing back of
analog signals of any wave shape (voltages and currents) as well as binary contact sequences. The signals can originate
from a recording device (e.g. any fault
disturbance recorder or modern protective relay) or from a simulation program
(e.g. EMTP). Supported file interfaces are
the IEEE COMTRADE (ASCII and binary)
and the OMICRON TRF format. Also implemented is a synchronizing function,
where the playback of transient signals
can be initiated by an external trigger signal. By means of a GPS timing signal, for
instance, two units situated at remote
locations can be synchronized and transient signals injected at the same instant
in time. Fig. 10 shows a fault originating
from a fault recorder on a series compensated line.

Fig. 10
Transient signals program section

Generation of harmonic signals

A separate program allows the easy
generation of harmonic signal traces.
With reference to the fundamental, the
amplitudes and phase angles of each harmonic can be entered for each voltage
and current phase. Signals containing
even and odd harmonics up to 20th order
(for 60 Hz) can be generated. The resulting waveshapes generated for each
phase can be transferred into the transient signals program part and be played
back. This can be used to test the inrush
restraint characteristic of a transformer
differential relay. Fig. 11 and Fig. 12 show
the harmonic generator together with the
corresponding signal in the transient signal program section.

7VP15 Portable Test System

7VP15 Portable threephase test system for protective relays, transducers and energy meters (Omicron CMC 156)
Testing overcurrent relays
This software module serves to manually
or automatically test overcurrent relays
(instantaneous and inverse time curve).
For testing directional overcurrent relays
the voltage outputs of the 7VP151 are
controlled in addition to the current outputs.
The test screen displays the characteristic of the relay on a time vs. current diagram in which the relay can be tested either manually or automatically at
different levels of current (in multiples of
pickup or absolute current). A variety of
relay characteristics are available: standard inverse curves as defined by IEC
2554 (BS142), relay manufacturer specific curves based on the IEEE standard
formula (PC37.112), definite time characteristics or characteristic curves based
on a user defined table (current vs. time).
The settings can be predefined in the parameter definition screen. For an automatic test a list of user specified test
points is followed. Fig. 13 shows an inverse characteristic, Fig. 14 a userdefined multiple step definite time characteristic.

Fig. 13 and Fig. 14

Inverse characteristic amd user defined characteristic of overcurrent relay

Testing groundfault relays

This module contains a network model
for the simulation of steady state and
transient groundfaults in networks using
a resonant grounding device (e.g. Peterson coil) to effectively ground the system
or in networks not grounded at all. The
simulated voltages and currents at the
relay location approximate those in a real
system (in amplitude, phase and frequency). The simulated waveshapes are
then transferred into the transient playback program section, where they can be
put out to the test object, typically a transient or wattmetric groundfault relay.
This program module can also be of assistance when setting such relays. During commissioning, the correct connection of the current transformers can also
be tested. Both conventional threephase
systems and twophase systems used
by some railways systems can be simulated. Fig. 15 shows the parameter input
screen for groundfault relays and Fig. 16
shows the simulated waveshapes in the
transient program section.

Softwarecontrolled sweeping of currents and voltages
For testing frequency, voltage, current
and power relays the software provides
an automatic sweep function for currents
and voltages (amplitude, phase and frequency) according to various test modes
(ramp from to, step, pulse, etc.). The
binary contact sequences at the binary
inputs are recorded to a resolution of
100 s. The results can be displayed in
tabular and/or graphical format. The results of such a test are shown in Fig. 17.

Fig. 17
Sweep function test results

Testing synchronizing devices

This software module is used for the
testing of synchronizing devices. One
voltage output simulates the network
(fixed at a specified amplitude and frequency), and the second voltage output
represents the generator/system to be
synchronized (variable in amplitude and
frequency). The software automatically
detects the circuitbreaker closing command and evaluates if the synchronization did take place in the correct synchronizing window.
The control of the second output can be
varied following different test modes.
The frequency and amplitude can be
changed linearly depending on the ramping time constants of the generator. For
synchronizing devices, which have automatic adjustment functions, the adjustment control commands (f, f, U, U)
can be used to control the second voltage output. To simulate the real system
as closely as possible, a dynamic generator model can be selected. The binary
contact sequences of the adjustment
commands can be displayed graphically
over time. A synchronoscope is implemented in the software, which eliminates
the need for additional test instruments
when testing synchronizing devices.
Fig. 18 shows the test screen.

7VP15 Portable Test System

7VP15 Portable threephase test system for protective relays, transducers and energy meters (Omicron CMC 156)
Testing measuring transducers
Due to the accuracy of its voltage and
current outputs and the analog measuring
inputs, the 7VP151 is the optimal test
instrument for measuring transducers
(voltage, current, frequency and all power
transducers). Both individual measurements (set in a vector diagram see
Fig. 19) as well as fully automatic
sweeps (see Fig. 20) can be performed.
The software evaluates the output signals of the transducer connected to the
analog current or voltage input of the
7VP151. The absolute, relative or full
scale error is calculated online and can
be displayed in graphical or tabular form.

Fig. 19 and Fig. 20

Manual testing using the vector diagram/Automatic sweep function

Testing energy meters

The accuracy of the 7VP151 can also be
effectively used to test singlephase and
threephase energy meters (Watthour,
Varhour and VAhour). Either a symmetrical system of voltages and currents or
an unbalanced system can be simulated.
The meter impulses are fed back into the
test set via the binary inputs where they
are evaluated.
The impulses originate either from an actual pulsing contact or from the output of
an optosensor. The meter can be tested
in three modes: load, noload and creep
test. In addition to individual tests
(Fig. 21), test sequences following a specified load profile can be run. For creating
a test sequence, individual tests can be
entered in a list which is then executed
line by line (Fig. 22).

Archiving of tests
For each test the test setup and results
can be archived automatically or on command. The archiving section provides
quick and efficient access to the saved
data at any later stage. The graphical and
tabular results can be displayed and examined, saved on file or printed. For further processing of archived data the test
set hardware need not be connected. The
archived data is saved in a separate file,
which enhances the data management of
the test results. Fig. 23 shows the archive screen in which all archived tests
are listed for selection.

Fig. 23

Generation of test reports

Comprehensive test reports can be generated after completion of a test. These
can be displayed, edited and printed either in graphical or in tabular form directly from the test screen or from the
archive at a later stage (Fig. 24, Fig. 25
and Fig. 26). Standard interfaces to external word processing and database programs are available for user specific documentation.

The 7VP153 contains six independent
current channels. These are arranged in
two isolated groups (A, B) and can be
used independently to those of the
7VP151 (e.g. for differential protection
testing).
The interconnection between 7VP151 and
7VP153 is effected by means of one control cable to be connected at the back of
the units. The 7VP153 outputs are galvanically separated from the outputs of the
7VP151.
The outputs of the 7VP153 can be
switched in parallel or series to meet individual power requirements. By connecting four current phases in series for example a power of up to 280 VA can be
put out, which allows testing a wide
range of electromechanical relays.

7VP152 Singlephase test equipment (Omicron CMC 151)

Fig. 34
7VP152 singlephase test equipment (Omicron CMC 151)

Application
The 7VP152 test set is designed for
single phase applications while incorporating the unique benefits of the 7VP15
test system. Versatility, high accuracy,
automatic archiving and reporting, playback of transient signals, easy use and
light weight are the key features.
The 7VP152 can run steady state and dynamic tests of
 Overcurrent relays
 Voltage relays
 Frequency relays
 Groundfault relays
 Distance relays
 Transducers
 Energy meters.
The unique features of the 7VP152 offer
a new quality for singlephase testing of
protection and measuringdevices.

20

Description
With a weight of only 21 pounds the
hardware contains
 The signal generation section
The amplifier section with one voltage
and one current amplifier
A numerical highprecision timer section with four binary inputs for relay
contact sequences
 The analog measuring section with
two analog inputs for the measurement of transducer signals
 Four relay output contacts and
 The complete control circuitry.
Signal generation is performed digitally
(DSP technology). The 16 bit D/A conversion results in a high quality signal even
at small signal amplitudes.
The amplifiers are fully electronic. Thus
no range switching is necessary for the
whole setting range, resulting in reliable
testing of highly sensitive protective relays.
The 7VP151 conforms to CE and fulfills
the requirements of IEC, TVGS and UL
in terms of EMC and safety. This allows
reliable operation in surroundings with
strong electrical interferences.
Optionally the 7VP152 can be upgraded
to a threephase 7VP151 at any later
stage.
The 7VP152 can not control the external
current amplifiers 7VP153 and 7VP155.

Software
All control tasks and data aquisition, processing and recording of test results are
performed by the operating software on a
personal computer. The data exchange
between the 7VP152 and the PC is established via the parallel printer port available on every standard PC.
The operating software for controlling the
7VP152 is based on the 7VP151 software
(pages 4 to 12), restricted to single
phase mode. There is no softwaremodul
for testing synchronizing devices with the
7VP152 test unit.
