Components of the
7VP151 threephase test system
The 7VP151 test unit comprises the following components:
Universal, threephase test unit in 19
desktop design incorporating current
and voltage amplifiers, measurement
sections and control electronics.
IBMcompatible PC (preferably laptop)
Operating software
Mode of operation (7VP151)
All device functions are controlled
through the operating software in the PC.
Operation is done using the mouse or
keyboard and data can be printed out
onto an external printer. Communication
between PC and test unit is established
using the parallel printer port. The connection to the test object is made via
group connector or banana sockets. The
menudriven user interface can be operated without prior programming knowledge.
Features (7VP151)
The device provides 3 current and 3
voltage outputs. All outputs are continuously and independently adjustable in
amplitude, phase and frequency. No
tapping of ranges necessary.
All current and voltage outputs are
overload and shortcircuitprotected
as well as against transient overvoltages.

Automatic testing in the impedance
diagram
The zone characteristics can be determined quickly using the automatic function in the impedance diagram. Based on
the method of testing along a straight
line in the impedance diagram, the software automatically follows through a sequence of individual test lines. These test
lines can be rotated around a user specified point in the impedance diagram or
can be shifted parallel to each other at a
specified angle. Along a test line the software determines the reaches of the individual zones (Fig. 4) using a speedoptimized search algorithm. In just a few
minutes the complete zone settings can
be verified.

Testing in the timegrading diagram
(Z/t diagram)
This program section is used for the
manual and/or automatic testing of time
grading characteristics of distance relays
in the impedance/time diagram along an
userdefined test line. The automatic test
utilizes the same speed optimized search
algorithm as implemented in the impedance diagram to determine the reaches
and tripping times of the individual zones.
If the impedance zones of the test object
are specified, the results are evaluated
according to the set tolerances. Fig. 6
shows the result of an automatic test at
the line angle.

Definition of test objects
Here the theoretical characteristics and
settings of a relay can be entered. This,
in combination with the previously described program sections, eliminates the
need for user programmed test files. The
settings and characteristics can either be
entered manually (independent of relay
manufacturers) or, for numerical distance
relays, can be loaded from the setting
software of various relay manufacturers
via the RIO file interface. When manually
entering the relay characteristics, the
user can combine lines, circles and circle
segments to construct any common impedance characteristic (e.g. mho, lens,
quadrilateral or any other geometric
shape) see Fig. 8.

Playing back transient signals
This program section allows the loading,
processing, saving and playing back of
analog signals of any wave shape (voltages and currents) as well as binary contact sequences. The signals can originate
from a recording device (e.g. any fault
disturbance recorder or modern protective relay) or from a simulation program
(e.g. EMTP). Supported file interfaces are
the IEEE COMTRADE (ASCII and binary)
and the OMICRON TRF format. Also implemented is a synchronizing function,
where the playback of transient signals
can be initiated by an external trigger signal. By means of a GPS timing signal, for
instance, two units situated at remote
locations can be synchronized and transient signals injected at the same instant
in time. Fig. 10 shows a fault originating
from a fault recorder on a series compensated line.
Fig. 10

Testing overcurrent relays
This software module serves to manually
or automatically test overcurrent relays
(instantaneous and inverse time curve).
For testing directional overcurrent relays
the voltage outputs of the 7VP151 are
controlled in addition to the current outputs.
The test screen displays the characteristic of the relay on a time vs. current diagram in which the relay can be tested either manually or automatically at
different levels of current (in multiples of
pickup or absolute current). A variety of
relay characteristics are available: standard inverse curves as defined by IEC
2554 (BS142), relay manufacturer specific curves based on the IEEE standard
formula (PC37.112), definite time characteristics or characteristic curves based
on a user defined table (current vs. time).
The settings can be predefined in the parameter definition screen. For an automatic test a list of user specified test
points is followed. Fig. 13 shows an inverse characteristic, Fig. 14 a userdefined multiple step definite time characteristic.
7VP15 Portable threephase test system for protective relays, transducers and energy meters (Omicron CMC 156)
Softwarecontrolled sweeping of currents and voltages
For testing frequency, voltage, current
and power relays the software provides
an automatic sweep function for currents
and voltages (amplitude, phase and frequency) according to various test modes
(ramp from to, step, pulse, etc.). The
binary contact sequences at the binary
inputs are recorded to a resolution of
100 s. The results can be displayed in
tabular and/or graphical format. The results of such a test are shown in Fig. 17.

7VP15 Portable threephase test system for protective relays, transducers and energy meters (Omicron CMC 156)
Testing measuring transducers
Due to the accuracy of its voltage and
current outputs and the analog measuring
inputs, the 7VP151 is the optimal test
instrument for measuring transducers
(voltage, current, frequency and all power
transducers). Both individual measurements (set in a vector diagram see
Fig. 19) as well as fully automatic
sweeps (see Fig. 20) can be performed.
The software evaluates the output signals of the transducer connected to the
analog current or voltage input of the
7VP151. The absolute, relative or full
scale error is calculated online and can
be displayed in graphical or tabular form.
11

Archiving of tests
For each test the test setup and results
can be archived automatically or on command. The archiving section provides
quick and efficient access to the saved
data at any later stage. The graphical and
tabular results can be displayed and examined, saved on file or printed. For further processing of archived data the test
set hardware need not be connected. The
archived data is saved in a separate file,
which enhances the data management of
the test results. Fig. 23 shows the archive screen in which all archived tests
are listed for selection.

Description
The 7VP153 contains six independent
current channels. These are arranged in
two isolated groups (A, B) and can be
used independently to those of the
7VP151 (e.g. for differential protection
testing).
The interconnection between 7VP151 and
7VP153 is effected by means of one control cable to be connected at the back of
the units. The 7VP153 outputs are galvanically separated from the outputs of the
7VP151.
The outputs of the 7VP153 can be
switched in parallel or series to meet individual power requirements. By connecting four current phases in series for example a power of up to 280 VA can be
put out, which allows testing a wide
range of electromechanical relays.
Application
The 6phase current amplifier 7VP153
serves as an additional device to the
7VP151 test set, for tests that require:
Higher currents and/or higher power in
the current path than is delivered by
the 7VP151
Up to nine independent current
phases.

Description
With a weight of only 21 pounds the
hardware contains
The signal generation section
The amplifier section with one voltage
and one current amplifier
A numerical highprecision timer section with four binary inputs for relay
contact sequences
The analog measuring section with
two analog inputs for the measurement of transducer signals
Four relay output contacts and
The complete control circuitry.
Signal generation is performed digitally
(DSP technology). The 16 bit D/A conversion results in a high quality signal even
at small signal amplitudes.
The amplifiers are fully electronic. Thus
no range switching is necessary for the
whole setting range, resulting in reliable
testing of highly sensitive protective relays.
The 7VP151 conforms to CE and fulfills
the requirements of IEC, TVGS and UL
in terms of EMC and safety. This allows
reliable operation in surroundings with
strong electrical interferences.
Optionally the 7VP152 can be upgraded
to a threephase 7VP151 at any later
stage.
The 7VP152 can not control the external
current amplifiers 7VP153 and 7VP155.
Software
All control tasks and data aquisition, processing and recording of test results are
performed by the operating software on a
personal computer. The data exchange
between the 7VP152 and the PC is established via the parallel printer port available on every standard PC.
The operating software for controlling the
7VP152 is based on the 7VP151 software
(pages 4 to 12), restricted to single
phase mode. There is no softwaremodul
for testing synchronizing devices with the
7VP152 test unit.
