Introduction

Introduction

1.1 Securiterre
The Model 870 Securiterre is a grounding system for loading gantries that offers improved safety during the
transfer of flammable liquids. It ensures that reliable grounding has been achieved before any product
transfer can take place. It is an indispensable item for every loading facility of flammable non-conducting
liquids and powders of pellets.
Electrostatic charge can be generated and accumulated during pumping, filtering and loading of tank
compartments with non-conducting liquids such as petroleum products and chemicals. As a result, the tank
obtains a different potential than the loading equipment. This can lead to sparking when for example the
loading arm is brought in, igniting the product vapors.

1.2 Securistore
The Enraf Securistore is a reliable cable dispenser, provided with a low-capacitance neoprene cable with a
length of 15 m and an earth clamp with break-release. The break-release as such prevents cable and
Securistore raptures in case of driver departure with still clamped on clamps. The dispenser is fitted with a
return spring to rewind the cable automatically after use.

1.3 Principle of operation

1.3.1 Truck version
The measuring circuit consists of an oscillator that detects the presence of a tank compartment insulated by
the truck tires by means of an impedance measurement (tank capacitance + tire resistance). At this time the
circuit is grounded via a large resistance, to reduce the hazard of sparking when the grounding clamp is
connected to the tank compartment.
If the impedance characteristic of a tank truck is detected, the oscillator starts. After a time delay, it triggers a
relay circuit that operates the signal lamps and an extra contact for externally mounted equipment. Another
relay connects the measuring loop and hence the tank compartment directly to ground so that no potential
exists between the tank (manhole) and say the loading arm. When the oscillator stops, as will be the case
when the grounding clamp is removed from the tank compartment for example, the relays will be
de-energized. To reduce the effects of cable capacitance, the Securiterre input and grounding clamp are
provided with impedance transformers.
If, in the case of the tank truck version of Securiterre, the impedance cannot be measured because of
excessive humidity or the presence of brine, a magnetically operated bypass can be activated to establish the
initial grounding.

1.3.2 Train version (also for small ships without cathodic protection)
After connection of the grounding clamp to the object (train wagon or ship), the Securiterre measures the
resistance of the object to ground (max 1 K). After verification of the maximum resistance to ground, a
relay connects the measuring circuit directly to ground. Another relay switches the signal lamp to green and
switches an extra contact to externally mounted equipment.

Instruction manual 870 Securiterre

Page 6

Introduction
1.3.3 Drum version
The drum version uses a double isolated ground clamp. The Securiterre measures the resistance over the
poles of the clamp (max. 3 ). After verification of the maximum resistance to ground, a relay connects the
measuring circuit direct to ground. Another relay switches the signal lamp to green and switches an extra
contact to externally mounted equipment.

1.4 Grounding clamp and grounding cable

The Securistore requires a special flexible blue grounding cable delivered by Enraf. The cable should be
connected to the instrument via the blue cable gland. Due to the attenuation of the cable to the instrument,
the distance between the Securiterre, Securistore and the tank truck to be earthed is limited to 15 m
standard. A longer or shorter cable length is available on request.
