Winter Wonders
Hard though it might be to believe, some people only visit EDEN COURT once a year,
missing out on the wealth of great film and theatre showcased there which we regularly
stand on each others shoulders with a megaphone to yell the praises of. No, for them
the only time theyll make that epic journey to a faraway place a couple of hundred yards
from the city centre is for the panto. Clever of Eden Court then to make an attempt to
snag their attention by using this years panto, Peter Pan, as the inspiration for their
art Winter Exhibition, FINDING NEVERLAND [1], running throughout December. Artists
of all abilities have submitted works showing the magical beauty of the Highlands and
the pictures are on display for panto-goers to see. And enjoy while, hopefully, vowing
to return for more than just the panto in the year ahead.
(pic Dreamy Hollow, James Gordon)
Unsurprisingly there are plenty of other winter art exhibitions on this month, two that
we particularly recommend being at KILMORACK GALLERY (exhibiting artists include
James Newton Adams faux-naive paintings, Eoghan Bridges sculptures of horses and
riders, landscape by well-known artists Ruth Brownlee, Kirstie Cohen, Janette Kerr and
Allan MacDonald plus new work by Peter White; and INCHMORE GALLERY where many
of the works are miniature CD sized creations. Just right for that Christmas stocking.

FAMILY

ROMANCE

So Here It Is
Merry Christmas, everybodys having fun. That elephant in the corner with the
black cloak and shiny helmet is STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS [1] (Vue &
EC from 17th Dec) which will doubtless occupy more screen-time this month than
all the other releases put together lets hope, as it appears, that it surpasses
the disappointing prequel trilogy films and re-invigorates the spirit of the original
trio of movies. Santa and Star Wars in the same month? SO exciting
With it being actual Christmas and all that, there is the inevitable slew of seasonal
releases there seems to have been a resurgence in the scmaltzy feel-good variety in
recent times but alas not so far to great effect. So what will this years bunch bring? Well,
A CHRISTMAS STAR (11th) seems like a sincere Nativity-esque family Brit-attempt, with
a feel-good cast including Pierce Brosnan, Suranne Jones, Liam Neeson, Kylie Minogue,
etc in a special-Xmas-powers-against-a-baddie-businessman kind of way. CHRISTMAS
WITH THE COOPERS (4th) presents a sassier family gathering-com with John Goodman,
Diane Keaton, Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde, Amanda Seyfried and Marisa Tomei yet we have
a suspicion that the whole is rather less than the sum of its parts, sadly. DADDYS HOME
(26th) is Will Ferrells loser against Mark Wahlbergs cool guy in a funny fight-to-the(not)-death over whos the best Dad. With Christmas accessories. Probably funny enough
but sho dont smell like a Christmas Classic. Like a value shop-bought mince pie while
youre waiting for one of mums. THE NIGHT BEFORE [2] (4th) is a teenplus-aimed
buddy-xmas movie as our trio des hombres live out one final pre-Xmas ritual, with added
Miley Cyrus. Seth Rogen is about to become a dad and takes drugs, Anthony Mackie is
too rich and famous for this small-time sh*t and Joseph Gordon Levitt should really know
better! KRAMPUS [3] (4th) appears to be a glossy US version of the wonderful clovenhooves-at-Christmas Rare Exports which is an Xmas highlight in our house. Trailer makes
it seem like a family-aimed horror-lite (though that could be misleading) with Toni Collette,
David Koetchner and plenty of other familiar faces. HECTOR [4] (11th), meanwhile, is
another Brit-effort this time smacking of class. Homeless Hector is Pete Mullen and
he is supported by a pleasingly uncommon and able cast Keith Allen, Gina McKee and
Stephen Tompkinson. Sentimental rather than slushy - might just be very good.

14

Elsewhere, there is A PEANUTS MOVIE (21st), all 3Dd up (with commendably 2D faces);
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are literally comedy SISTERS; Ron Howards IN THE HEART
OF THE SEA tells of Herman Melvilles Moby Dick-inspiring adventure with Chris no shirt
Hemsworth, Ben Whishaw, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Brendan Gleeson and a glut
of CGI; the source-disrespecting VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN (3rd) with messrs Radcliffe
and McAvoy; and the most wince-inspiring movie of the year, horror-western, BONE
TOMAHAWK (11th) with Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox. NOT for the fainthearted. And finally, Peter Mullen again appears this time in SUNSET SONG [5] (EC 4th),
the beautifully-shot movie of the Grassic-Gibbon book with apparently an outstanding
turn from Agyness Deyn in the lead role.

The big family event of the month (apart from something called Christmas) is, of course, the
Eden Court Panto. This year its PETER PAN [1] and you can read more about it on P34.
Thats not the only show to get the young uns into the festive spirit though, the first being
LITTLE ELVES CHRISTMAS PARTY! At EDEN COURT on SUN 06 DEC. The exclamation mark
is a hint that therell be much whooping and hollering at this jam-packed hour of singing,
dancing, games and creative play for the under-5s. A ticket is required for both baby and
parent and make sure to wear red and green.
Another popular tradition is the WINTER WONDERLAND event taking place from 1113
DEC and providing an opportunity for children to meet Santa and his Reindeer in a beautifully
illuminated WHIN PARK. The Winter Wonderland show is hugely popular with the youngest
members of the Inverness community; and is one of the highlights of the Winter Festival for
toddlers. The event will see the return of the giant inflatable Walk on Water balls on the
Whin Park Boating Lake.
Stripping away the festive vibe and celebrating instead the fun to be had in another land
like ours where its perishing cold, WHEN THE WINTER WIND BLOWS at EDEN COURT
from 1622 DEC is another lovely interactive affair from Eden Court CREATIVE aimed at the
under-5s, in this case on a quest to help a little Eskimo girl in Alaska to keep out of the wind.
Perhaps the most important life lesson to be learned all month and a whole lot of fun too.
There are several shows each day so check out whatsonhighlands.com for more.

Get Out And Party

As the festive season leaps upon us like a lion tearing down an antelope, theres no shortage
of musical diversions this month to keep you out celebrating, with all genres well represented.
FAT SUIT [1] probably deserve a genre all to themselves. The fourteen-piece ensemble has
been assembled from a diversity of musical backgrounds and it includes folk musicians
with finesse, house artists with grit, rockers with attitude and hard boppers with style.
Surprisingly it works rather well as youll see when they play IRONWORKS on 03 DEC.
Support comes from excellent local combo SPRING BREAK [2].
Another band whove had a fine year and just keep on getting better is NEON WALTZ [3]. The
Caithness boys are bringing back the spirit of Echo & The Bunnymen and distilling it through
their own fresh imaginations. Their gig at MAD HATTERS on 05 DEC will be immense. Also at
MAD HATTERS, this time on 03 DEC, you can catch the highly acclaimed BLACK FEATHERS
combining elements of folk, roots, Americana, and southern rock. Nice.
Good to see the SPECTRUM CENTRE being brought back into the musical fold. Hot on the
heels of hosting the inception of local label IMOUT Records, its the venue for both an EP
launch for SILVER COASTs Seasons EP on 11 DEC (support from ALL SO SIMPLE and
SLY AT LAST) and A NIGHT OF RAWK on 12 DEC with BROKEN RAVENS [4], SEED OF
SORROW, DEVILS QUEEN and THE LAW AND THE LEASH. Tickets from the venue.
A word too for a couple of tribute shows, HOLLY AT CHRISTMAS [5] (1113 DEC, EC) and
ABBAMANIA at IRONWORKS on 12 DEC plus a rare reunion of many much-loved local acts
including FINDO GASK, JETSTAR and LYMERICK SMITH at BACK FOR GOOD at Ironworks
on 27 DEC, fundraising for Macmillan Highland & Raigmore Cancer Fund.
If you prefer your music a little folkier, its a bumper month, with FRED MORRISON [6]
@ Glen Urquhart Public Hall on 02 DEC and SHOOGLENIFTY [7] @ Old Bridge Inn on 20
DEC, before the end of year festivities include RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS [8] @ Ironworks
on 29 DEC and, on Hogmanay itself, the excellently named BOGMANAY at Bogbain Farm

There are many things we feel like doing over the holiday period, usually revolving around
slumping in front of the telly and stuffing ourselves with food. For some however, nothing
screams Xmas more than the chance to get a bit of exercise. If its the gentler sort and
for a good cause then youll be making sure to take part in this years WILDHEARTS
SANTA RUN on SUN 13 DEC. Participants can run, jog or walk around the 5km route
(beginning at Inverness Leisure and taking in the riverside) with friends and family while

local schools and helps people in the developing world work their way out of poverty
via microfinance. More details at tinyurl.com/santaruninverness and theres more

Ken Kelman: Basket Case...

I like to use a hand basket when I
shop in a supermarket - there Ive said
it, its out there, Im so inept at using
supermarket trollies that I always take
the basket option, its simply not worth
the risk of me running into another
customers ankles or, worse, a large
display of bottles of expensive wine.

buggers apart before finally giving up

in disgust, throwing the pair aside and
repeating the whole shennanigans
with the next set and i know im not
the only one this happens to. Ive
seen others suffer the same problem,
recently witnessing one chap who
was obviously so used to his baskets
sticking together that when he
somehow managed to pick up a single
one as he breezed into the shop he
shook it violently anyway. It made it
look like his hand had decided to pick
up the basket of its own accord while
his brain was struggling to convince
said hand to put it back because it
wasnt needed.

Im not the only person to use the little

wire baskets, I know this because
theres provision for huge stacks
of them at the shops entrance and
quite often these stacks are depleted
and I have to trail to the self-service
checkout to get one. I assume its
fellow shoppers that are moving
them there and not just a disgruntled
employee making life difficult me for My most recent bout of basket-rage
their own amusement.
was particulary violent and saw me
hurling several of them around the
I think its time for us basket little foyer of the store and Id like to
users to get together and tell the appologise to anyone who witnessed
supermarkets that their wire baskets and was disturbed by my unseemly
are, in fact, a bit crap. Invariably the behaviour, though I would like to claim
plastic coating on the handles is torn mitigating circumstances.
or mising, or worse, all sticky from the
grubby fingers of countless previous You see the cash machine had upset
users - dont they ever wipe these me and left me all fired up. I dont
down with hand-sanitizer? But by far like change, it unsettles me. While
the worst issue is that when you pick waiting for the machine to count my
up the top basket its almost always cash (honestly how long can it take
firmly attached to the one beneath to count out a single ten pound note
and so begins the frustrating shaking - is that even counting?) an advert
and jerking of the basket to try to popped up on the wee screen, it told
release it from its neighbour. I cant me that a near-by pizza establishment
count the number of times I have had a new look .. a new menu
stood in a shop doorway for many and a new vibe. I wondered just who
minutes trying to wrestle the little this advert was aimed at. I very rarely

eat in such places and dont feel Id

be tempted to do so by an annoying
pop-up that was basically just holding
up my banking transaction, also the
wording by use of the word new
tends to suggest its meant to
encourage those whod been before
but for one reason or another never
went back. What its really saying is
hey, you might not have liked us in
the past but weve changed, honest
- give us another chance and youll
see. Look the menus all new, weve
redecorated the place and that old
vibe you didnt like? - well thats all
gone now. Come on, come back and
try us again ...please. And while that
is maybe all well and good, although,
it comes accross as a tad needy - it
might tempt a couple of people back
through your doors for another try ..
but think about what its saying to
their loyal clientel, the people who
have been enjoying their fayre on
a regular basis maybe for several
years. To them the advert is saying
remember your favourite pizza shop?
remember the decor you love? the
ambiance that was just right for you?
- well weve changed all that .. and the
menus different too so we might not
even be serving your favourite dish
anymore. Its like they just dont care
and that upsets me, and, Im afraid
to say I may have taken a little of that
upset out on the shopping baskets
and for that Im sorry - though theyre
not entrely blameless either.

Behind You, Etc

Its that time of the year when we are morally obliged to inform you that its panto season,
before embarking on an endless bantz-bounce of oh no its not, oh yes it is etc until
everyone gets bored. If past experiences are anything to go by though there wont be a hint
of boredom at the annual EDEN COURT panto, running from 10 DEC10 JAN. This year
its PETER PAN [1] with Greg Powrie swapping his usual dames dresses this year for
a moustache and wrist attachment to play the villainous pirate Captain Hook. The show
also stars Iain Wotherspoon as Nanny McSmee, Ross Allan as Smee, Kieran Morris as
Peter Pan, Alana Jacqueline as Tinker Bell, Rebecca Maltman as Wendy, Stephanie Falls
as Tiger Lily and Invernesss own Claire Darcy as Mrs Darling. As always, tickets go fast,
so get yours now
Peter Pan isnt the only panto in town though and you can also see BABES IN THE WOOD at
FLORIANS (04-12 DEC) and ROBIN HOOD at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION (08 & 09 DEC) while
the folk at LITTLE THEATRE NAIRN have come up with something a little more unexpected
in the form of a CALAMITY JANE PANTO running from 26 NOV12 DEC.
Coincidentally, the now traditional Eden Court anti-panto also has a Western vibe.
Following the success of productions inspired by Fawlty Towers, Allo Allo! and Sweeney
Todd, this years show, THE GOLDEN NUGGET OF BADCROW [2] (1517 DEC) is a
spoof cowboy affair billing itself as Carry on Cowboy meets Monty Python in the Mexican
desert. And if that doesnt provide a bracingly hilarious riposte to festive sentimentality,
nothing will.
Therell be more than a smidgen of panto spirit at the ROCKNWRESTLE WINTER SLAM
[3] at IRONWORKS on 11 DEC. Its the latest edition of a concept that has proved to be
one of the years success stories and this end-of-year showdown should be no exception.
As usual there are all sorts of VIP meet-and-greet options for those who want to meet their
heroes.
Another of 2015s most impressive cultural triumphs has been the amount of great standups coming up here and for those who like their puns, STEWART FRANCIS [4] who comes
to EDEN COURT on 14 DEC with his show called (surprise, surprise) PUN GENT, will be a
more than welcome way to end the comedy year.

EATING
OUT

Caribbean Bar & Kitchen

14 Church Street, Inverness
For almost half a decade now, theres
been a small part of the Highlands
thats forever Jamaica thanks to the
magnificently named Glenroy Glaze
who, back in 2010 opened Kool
Runnings in Inverness emerging
cultural heartland, aka Baron Taylor
& Church. Five years on and hes
still there, though in recent months
the place has changed its name to
Caribbean Bar & Kitchen, slightly to
the dismay of those of us for whom
the greatest ever film about West
Indian bobsleighers triumphing over
adversity at the Winter Olympics (or
certainly one of the top three) remains
dear to our hearts. And so, despite
the name change, itll always be Kool
Runnings in our heads.
And presumably in the heads of locals
who are lucky enough to have the
only Jamaican restaurant in Scotland
right on their doorstep, though you
do sense that perhaps not enough
Invernessians realise just how lucky
they are, much of the places trade
coming from tourists, particularly on
the rare sunny days in summer when
they can sit at the tables outside and
conjure up at least some of the spirit

of sandy beaches and palm trees on

the other side of the Atlantic. Now that
winters on its way its busier in the
evening than during the day, hence the
fact that when we visit for a midweek
lunch we just about have the place to
ourselves, the only other customers
being a middle-aged Jamaican lady (a
good sign) hankering for the food of her
youth and her Scottish buddy resolutely
sticking to something he knows.
Perhaps its that fellows reticence
to try new things something that
can be particularly pronounced round
here which means that GG has had
to compromise somewhat by putting
all sorts of European dishes on the
menu, most recently (and proclaimed
on large posters in the window)
Local Fish & Chips. The latters
only concession to the spirit of the
Caribbean is that the picture has a
palm tree sunset in the background
and surely local fish and chips is
just about the least exotic thing you
can think of. The Caribbean has plenty
of great fish dishes and perhaps its
those that should be celebrated here.
Similarly, while the interior still sports the
pictures of Marley, Bolt et al, the music

played isnt reggae, but an old Sinatra

compilation, something that would
only provide an authentic Jamaican
experience were you to be dining at Ian
Flemings villa with Noel Coward and
the gang. Messy menus only add to the
general feeling of confusion, a criticism
were only making out of frustration that
such failings are concealing the fact that
this place provides some of the most
interesting and brilliantly cooked food
in the city.
Even the drinks menu includes an
array of rums, some 21 years old,
that trumps anything anywhere else in
Inverness can offer, but we decide to
leave any exploration for another time,
plumping instead for a couple of rather
fine ginger beers. They actually prove
to be the perfect accompaniment to
the spicing of Jamaican food, a tip
worth remembering.
And to start I have perhaps the most
iconic Jamaican dish of all, Ackee &
Saltfish. Those whove lived in any
kind of West Indian community will
know its ubiquity and once youve
tried it youll understand why. A
fruit of the lychee family, ackee is

usually found in tins here and has the

look, taste and texture of scrambled
egg, which when combined with
the salted cod makes for a glorious
combination. And if you doubt it,
just remember smoked salmon and
scrambled eggs and start from there.
The accompanying fried plantain and
dumplings, another Jamaican staple
provide the perfect starchncarbs
contribution.
My companions Goats Cheese Tart
is one of those things that could be,
but probably isnt, offered on every
Caribbean street corner, though with
goats a main food source (and the
curried goat on the menu here is
a triumph) it makes sense for the
cheese to be from those animals. And
the dish itself is rated top notch, the
accompanying red onion marmalade
and balsamic glaze perfectly offsetting
the tanginess of the cheese.
For my main Im tempted by the
aforementioned Curried Goat, but
go instead for the Meaty Combo
which combines two of Glenroys
specialities, ribs and jerk chicken.
The latter is, according to the menu
world famous and you can see
why. Or rather you can taste why,
since, by necessity, the herbs and
spices (notably thyme, pepper, scotch
bonnet and allspice) coating the
chicken end up blackened, not an
awfully appealing look, but imparting
a wonderful flavour to a substantial
piece of bird. And wonderfully tender
too, as are the ribs. Again given a dry
rub of special ingredients and slow
cooked for a couple of hours, they melt
in the mouth and take away the title
of Best Ribs In Town hitherto held by
Scotch & Rye. Accompanying roast
sweet potatoes and salad are almost
unnecessary when the meat itself is
as delicious as this.

No meat at all in my pals main,

chosen from an admirably varied
list of vegetarian options. Jamaican
Style Steamed Callaloo is, as the
name suggests, another traditional
West Indian dish and though he was
uncertain about what to expect, the
mix of vegetables served on rice and
peas turns out to be fantastic, very
tasty and filling, providing many of your
five-a-day, if youre into that sort of

thing. Obviously folks who are afraid

of peas, broccoli and similar workaday
veg will see this as something from
the seventh circle of hell, but if youre
one of the growing numbers who are
tired of the same old pasta or roasted
vegetable restaurant option you will
enjoy this.
Weve moaned before about how
puddings are often a real let-down with
few chefs capable of turning out both
great savoury and sweet creations
and with the Caribbean hardly famous
for its desserts were not expecting
anything particularly notable. More fool
us, with my companion proclaiming
his Flamb Tropical Fruit Cake to be
a strong contender for Best Pudding
Of The Year. A light, warm fruit cake,
doused in rum and flamed in the
kitchen is accompanied by a sublime
home-made rum and raisin ice cream
and polished off quick smart.
My Passion Fruit Cheesecake, though
closer in texture to a panacotta than a
cheesecake is equally impressive, as
is more home made ice cream, this
time mango-flavoured. Presentation on
both is identical, right down to the everpresent cape gooseberry, strawberry
and sugar folderols, but theyre good
looking desserts and a confident close
to proceedings.
The Caribbean Bar & Kitchen has
its faults, most notably those messy
menus and unnecessary culinary
compromises, but at its heart theres
some glorious Jamaican cooking. And
again we have to emphasise, this is
something you cant get anywhere else
in Scotland. Head along and see just
how good it can be.

One of the factors that have contributed to
the fluctuations in the market is continuing
economic uncertainty, notably the downturn in
the oil and gas industry.
But, there are strong positive signs for the
coming months. The number of properties
coming onto the market increased quite
considerably last month up 20% compared to
October 2014.
The HSPC website at www.hspc.co.uk
continues to attract a record number of visitors
and property enquiries last month were up
by 3% on October 2014. Taken together this
means that there are a greater number of
potential buyers visiting our website and a
wider choice of more than 800 properties on
offer.
