How can I calculate the corrosion rate?

Kindly guide me how to calculate corrosion rate for nitrided steel in NaCl solution
using polarization curves.
I have calculated Icorr, Ecorr using Tafel plots, and now i want to calculate
Corrosion rate.

I believe you got Icorr and Ecorr from electrochemical corrosion
measurement by using Tafel plot. Chenge Ecorr by 10-20 mV and
measure i and continue. Plot Eapp-Ecorr vs. i and from the slope get
polarization resistance, Rp. two beta constants (anodic/cathodic) are
already obtained from slope of anodic/cathodic plot. From these
parameters you can calculate by using Butler-Volmer eqn.

DearMuhammad
You can use icorr to calculate corrosion rate in many units as follow:
CR (in mil per year)= 0.13 x icorr (in micro amper per cm2) x [eq. wt of
steel / density of steel]
CR (in mm/y) = 3.27 x icorr (mA.cm^-2) x (e/d)
If you need to convert corrosion rate from/ or to mdd, you can use the
following relation:
CR (mpy)= (1.44/ density of steel) x CR (mdd)
If you need, I can help you to calculate equivalent wt. (e) of steel.

Dear Mohammed
Corrosion rate (mpy)=0.13* Icorr.*(e/density)
where:I Icorr.(in micro amper per cm2)
e:Equivalentweight= atomic weight /valency)
Atomic weightofsteel =55.845.
Density of steel = 7.86 g/ cm3

From weight loss measurements, the corrosion rate (CR) (mpy) in the
absence and presence of inhibitor can be determined using the Equation:
CR(mpy) = (3.45*106 * W)/ AT
where CR is the corrosion rate, W is the average weight loss (g) , is the
density of metal specimen (g cm3), A is the surface area of the

For the corrosivity and corrosion rate calculation of Steel, Aluminum,
Cupper and Zinc at atmospheric loading are the usage of the international
standarts ISO 9223 til ISO 9226 meaningful and valid. For indoor
corrosivity is the ISO 11844-1 valid.
