Number of Meetings: 5 One presentation detailed our work in Nepal. One

presentation spotlighted a local non-profit’s work in Uganda. Three meetings focused on

5 International dates. We announced our support of Chilean earthquake relief efforts and

Say No to Violence Against Women at one meeting as well.

Most Outstanding Programs: Nepal Literacy and Pennies for Peace

Programs impacted 6,327 students. New Project: The Flag Exchange Project emerged

from our committee’s desire to support International’s focus on Patriotism. Because

individual responsibility to humanity is an inherent component of patriotism, it crosses

international boundaries. Therefore, we adopted The Flag Exchange Project. Expanded

3 projects.

Three Existing Projects: (1) Nepal Literacy Program: A committee member

delivered our school supplies to 3 remote villages, arranged renovation of a

playground/soccer field, and provided winter clothing to students learning in unheated

schools. A program about Nepal was presented to 205 elementary students and ASTRA.

(2) Pennies for Peace supports education in Pakistan/Afghanistan. In partnership with

our public library, Altrusa funded 3,000 flyers that were distributed to all RE-J1

elementary students and provided refreshments for a presentation focused on learning

about this region. We purchased 12 books for 3 libraries and donated $500, which can

purchase school supplies for 2,077 Afghan/Pakistani students. (3) Kiva Loans provided

17 team micro-loans by re-loaning $125 ($425 actual). At least 80% of our membership

participated in International Projects by fund raising, contributing to/managing Kiva,

donating clothing, distributing/ordering books, providing refreshments, creating flyers, or

presenting programs. Personal service hours totaled 120. Fundraising hours totaled 103.

Total hours = 223. Our goal of creating more understanding of the Himalayan region

among U.S. students was realized by outreach to 3,255 students. Our goal of supporting

Himalayan literacy benefited 3,077 students in 3 foreign countries. Kiva benefited 156

entrepreneurs in 10 countries and raised club awareness of global needs (attachments).

International Dates Observed: 5 International Literacy Day,

World Health Day, World Food day, International Day for the Elimination of Violence

Against Women, and Human Rights Day were observed with presentations by members

of the International Committee, Women’s Issues Committee, and the Literacy

Committee. In support of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against

Women, a flyer was distributed and members urged to support Say No to Violence

Against Women. Additionally, our club sponsored community V-Day events, including

Take Back the Night and the Vagina Monologues.

UN Representative: Our club has been aware of and utilized UN Representatives

for quite some time. We supplied the flyer provided by our UN representative, Audrey

Braver, to our membership regarding Say No to Violence Against Women and urged our

membership to support the effort by registering online.

UN Program: The International Relations Committee co-chair presented a program

dressed as Eleanor Roosevelt who was an Altrusa member and United Nations

representative. Members learned about the history of the UN and Eleanor’s early

involvement that led to Altrusa’s ongoing participation and presence at the United

Nations (attachment).
