EXT. SPACE - STARFLEET SPACE DOCK, EARTH - CONTINUOUS

We slowly pan out, revealing the name of the Enterprise. We

keep pulling out to see that the Enterprise is in dock over
Earth.
KIRK (V.O.)
The best ship in Starfleet. Built
to be faster, more powerful than
any other ship out there. Soon The
Enterprise will make history by
launching on the first ever five
year exploratory mission in
Federation history.

INT. STARFLEET HEADQUARTERS - AUDITORIUM

We are inside a medium-sized auditorium space. It turns out

that the image of the Enterprise we were looking at is a
hologram being shown to a group of young academy students.
JAMES TIBERIUS KIRK is standing on the auditorium stage in
front of a podium, addressing the crowd. He is a man of much
confidence, pride, and a self-assuredness that borders on-and sometimes crosses into-- arrogance.
KIRK
I am James T. Kirk. You may know of
me as the captain who beat the
Kobayashi Maru-SOMEONE IN AUDIENCE (O.C.)
Didnt you cheat?
KIRK
I never said how I beat it. If not
that, then maybe youve heard my
name when talking about how I
captained the Enterprise, defeated
the Romulan Nero and saved the
Earth.

KIRK (CONT'D)
Or maybe you heard my name
associated with the incident
involving Kahn that took place a
year ago. After a year of repairs
and retrofitting, I will once again
be taking the Enterprise as captain
for this historic five year deepspace mission. This is a great
opportunity to ask questions before
this mission is underway. Whod
like to go first?
A lot of hands shoot up; just about everyone in the
auditorium wants to ask questions.
KIRK (CONTD)
(pointing)
You, the lovely lady in the third
row.
The LOVELY LADY stands up, pleased to have been called on.
KIRK (CONTD)
Whats your question?
LOVELY LADY
Are you single?
This draws a lot of giggles and laughs from the crowd. Many
of the men present there dont look quite as pleased with it,
though. Kirk, however, is eating it up, responding with his
most dazzling and charming smile.
KIRK
Well, Im sorry to say that Im in
a long-term relationship... with
the Enterprise. Other than that,
yes, I am single.
(winks)
For now.
The wink has the desired reaction from the girl.
KIRK (CONTD)
Next question?
(surveys the room)
You, fifth row.
The person he calls on is, unsurprisingly, another woman,
this one bookish.

BOOKISH GIRL
Captain, how would you respond to
people who say that sending our
newest, most expensive ship on a
five year deep-space mission is a
huge mismanagement of resources?
This is not the type of question Kirk was expecting; he is
put off by it. We get the impression he calls on women
because he expects their questions to be easier to handle.
KIRK
Uh, I dont know of anyone who has
said that.
BOOKISH GIRL
I just did, captain.
KIRK
Well, youre misinformed. How is it
that people dont see how important
exploration is? What happened to
humanitys drive to discover the
unknown, to go where no man has
ever gone before? What happened to
that primal need to find all the
answers? Its that need that drove
us to the stars in the first place.
Its that need that has led us to
where we are today.
As we scan the audience we can see that this is not the sort
of response anyone was expecting from Kirk.
KIRK (CONTD)
(passion building)
Mankinds greatest achievements-flight, landing a man on the moon,
discovering the cure for polio,
these were all possible because
someone dared to explore beyond
what was known. I dont know what
well find out there. What I do
know is that if there is even the
slightest chance that something out
there might change everything we
know about... about everything. Say
what you will, but nothing about
that seems like a waste to me.

Kirk clears his throat and gathers himself a bit.
KIRK (CONTD)
Okay. That brings our time to a
close today; I have a ships
resupply that I need to be
overseeing. Thank you all for your
time.
An MC comes out onto the stage.
MC
Ladies and gentlemen, lets have a
round of applause for Captain Kirk!
The audience applauds loudly for Kirk as he walks off of the
stage. As he leaves the auditorium we

INT. STARFLEET ORBITAL STATION - TRANSPORT ROOM

The room is crowded, filled with boxes of supplies, munitions

and parts being transported and carried to the Enterprise.
Kirk oversees all of the action with an unmistakable air of
anticipation.
SCOTTY (O.S.)
Hey! Hey! Just what the devil do
you think your doing?
LIEUTENANT COMMANDER MONTGOMERY SCOTT, a mousy Scottish man
and chief engineer of the Enterprise, hurries into frame and
runs onto the transporter pad where two MEN are stacking
munitions boxes atop each other in preparation for transport.
SCOTTY (CONTD)
Do you know what these are? These
are photon torpedoes, for Gods
sake! You cant just throw them on
top of each other all willy nilly!
If one box falls over the impact
could be enough to set them off and
then youve killed us all!
The the MEN look a bit abashed and un-stack the boxes.
SCOTTY (CONTD)
(to Kirk)
Youd think Starfleet would have
people who knew what they were
doing overseeing the arming of a
ship like this.
KIRK
I was overseeing them, Scotty.
SCOTTY
Like I said, youd think they would
have people who know what theyre
doing.
One of the Men hands Scotty a datapad which he checks over,
counts the boxes, and then signs off on.

Should be here in two days.
KIRK
What? Two days? No, thats not
going to work. I want to leave
tomorrow, Scotty. Tomorrow.
SCOTTY
The warp coils have to be delivered
here from the other side of the
planet, Jim. And I dont know about
you, but I dont fancy the idea of
being out in the middle of unknown
space with a warp engine that cant
work if the coils burn out.
KIRK
Cant you just requisition the
coils from one of these other
ships? Were getting ready to
undertake the Federations first
ever five year exploratory mission.
I think we can get some special
treatment, dont you?
SCOTTY
Ill see what I can do, but Id
think youd appreciate the delay.
It gives you time to fill the
vacancy in your senior officers.
KIRK
(suspicious)
I dont have any vacancies in my
senior officers. Which senior
officer are we talking about?

EXT. STARFLEET HEADQUARTERS - QUAD - DAY

In civilian clothes LIEUTENANT NYOTA UHURA is standing there,

just looking around and enjoying the sunshine. After a moment
she is joined by COMMANDER SPOCK, in his Starfleet uniform,
as usual.
SPOCK
I was wondering where you ventured
off to. The senior staff officers
meeting will begin in approximately
seven minutes. What are you doing?
UHURA
It felt stuffy inside, all of a
sudden. Ive trained my entire life
for this posting. This mission is
something Ive wanted so badly, but
now... all I can think is that this
might be my last chance to feel the
breeze, or see the sky. Were going
to be spending the next five years
aboard a starship.
The two begin walking, just casual, not really with any
destination in mind. Uhura is really enjoying being outside.
Spock is enjoying Uhuras enjoyment of the outside, whether
he would say it or not.
SPOCK
Our mission is very likely to take
us to many habitable planets. You
will have ample opportunity to feel
breezes and look at skies.
UHURA
Its not the same. It wont be my
sky. The sky isnt the same here as
it was on Vulcan, right?

SPOCK
Its alright. While the loss of my
planet still triggers emotional
responses within me, I have come to
be able to remember it fondly, as
well. However, we dont put the
same sort of emotional response in
the view of the heavens as you
humans seem to. Vulcan was located
in a different part of the galaxy,
so naturally the sky did not
display the same constellations as
Earth. That difference does not
sadden me, however.
UHURA
Really? You never returned to
Vulcan after traveling and looked
up and felt comforted by the
familiar sky?
SPOCK
I felt comfort returning to my
place of birth, a place I spent a
large portion of my life, but that
was not due to the sky.
Uhura slips her arms around Spock in a romantic gesture.
UHURA
Okay, okay, I get it; youre not
sentimental.
(smiles coyly)
Im sure I can think of one thing
you and I will both miss about
being here, though.
SPOCK

The privacy.

Come on, Spock. Youll never say

SPOCK
I am a logical man, doctor. Captain
Kirks promotion was a natural
result of the events that brought
us together. I realize command has
its fascination, but I neither
enjoy the idea, nor am I frightened
by it. It simply exists. And I will

MCCOY
Fair enough. But something tells me

Marcus says nothing at first, studying Uhura closesly.
Something she sees is enough for her and she decides to tell
her what she knows.
MARCUS
I think that the ionization becomes
so concentrated that it depolarizes
the power in the ship. It forces
the ship to use more power to
operate its systems, draining the
power too fast for the engines to
keep up with. It drains them dry. A
ship like the Enterprise is big
enough that it could clear the
effect before it took any serious
drain; our warp engines were
effected because our path took us
right through the effect. The
shuttle is too small and cant
generate enough power to keep
itself going, and so is drawn to
the planet.

on the edges of known space.
Now we see multiple fists beating on the hull of the closed

SPOCK (V.O.)
A shuttle flight encounters a
dangerous anomaly in orbit around
an unexplored planet. The shuttle

The pre-warp civilization on the

Spock is sitting at the main controls while Scotty is playing

with some of the circuitry system.
SPOCK
Ready to electrify the hull, Mr.
Scott?
SCOTTY
Ready. Id advise everyone to stand
away from the walls, if you please.
ANGLE on his tool as he reaches for a particular circuit.
SCOTTY (CONTD)
This should work. Theoretically.
He touches the circuit with his tool and a spark flies.

EXT. TAURUS II - CRASH SITE - EVENING

72

The aliens are still beating on the ship, but suddenly there
is a sizzling sound of electricity and AN ELECTRIC FIELD
SURGES OVER THE HULL, shocking the aliens that are on it,
sending them flying.
73

INT. GALILEO 7

73

MCCOY
Its working!
SPOCK
Doctor Archibald, I believe you are
a qualified pilot, according to
your records?
THADDEUS
Yes, sir.
SPOCK
Get us out of here, then.
THADDEUS
Aye, sir.
Thaddeus takes pilot position. Spock sits down and starts to
strap himself in next to Boma.

BOMA
What about the weight? Wont we
crash unless someone stays behind?
SPOCK
A hypothetical I am willing to
risk, Mr. Boma.
74

EXT. TAURUS II - CRASH SITE - EVENING

74

The shuttle slowly takes off and begins to fly away, leaving
the aliens behind, angrily shaking their weapons at their
departed enemies.
75

INT. GALILEO 7

75

The crew is very excited about their departure.

SCOTTY
I dont believe it! Were actually
flying again! Well done, me!
BOMA
Commander, I want to apologize for
my outburst earlier.
SPOCK
It was understandable given the
considerable pressures of our
situation, Mr. Boma. No apology is-An alarm starts going off, cutting Spocks sentence short.
THADDEUS
Commander! We have sudden power
loss in the starboard engine!
Trying to compensate with port-side
redirection.

SCOTTY
I spoke too soon. I knew I was
speaking too soon and I spoke
anyway.
MCCOY
I should have stopped you.
SPOCK
We need to lighten the weight of
the shuttle. Doctor Archibald, take
us ten meters over the ground.
Allow gravity to do its work to
conserve power. Mr. Boma, your
assistance please. I need you to
open the door of the shuttle.
Spock drags Latimers now-covered body towards the shuttle
door.
SCOTTY
Im afraid Latimers body wont be
enough, commander.
SPOCK
Indeed, Mr. Scott. Thatis why I
will be joining him.
SCOTTY
Are ye mad?
MCCOY
Spock, wait. Ill go. Im best able
to keep myself alive for as long as
I can.
BOMA
Sorry doctor, Im going. All I need
are a few rations and a phaser.
Just make sure to come back and get
me after the Enterprise rendezvous.
Spock carries Latimers body to the now-open door.
SPOCK
Your decision is admirable, Mr.
Boma, and will be reflected in the
log. But as commanding officer, the
decision is mine. I am the most
capable of surviving on my own. Nor
is their time for debate.

assures me that we can make the
rendezvous with New Paris ourselves
with time to spare. As for your
report to Starfleet, I look forward

Kirk steps through the door in his dress uniform.
KIRK
You wanted to see me, sir?
BARNETT
I just read High Commissioner
Ferriss report. He did not think
very highly of you.
KIRK
And here I was hoping he would name
his first born after me.
BARNETT
He is a man with considerable
influence in Starfleet, captain.
Hes tried very hard to have you
transferred from the Enterprise.
From Kirks face it is clear that this is his worst nightmare
come to life.
KIRK

safety of my crew. We got the
supplies to New Paris on time-early. Just because Ferris and I

As always, the alien just ignores him.

All eyes on the bridge turn to Kirk. Every single person up
there feels his enthusiasm, shares it. This is a huge deal
for everyone.
KIRK (CONTD)
In just a few moments we are going
to activate our engines and head
off. I dont know what were going
to find beyond the edges of
explored space. Thats part of the
fun. What I do know is that I
couldnt ask for a better crew to
undertake this with. This is the
best crew in Starfleet, and from
today, were going to prove it.
Prepare for departure. That is all.
The people on the bridge applaud the speech.
