KIRK (CONT'D)
Or maybe you heard my name
associated with the incident
involving Kahn that took place a
year ago. After a year of repairs
and retrofitting, I will once again
be taking the Enterprise as captain
for this historic five year deepspace mission. This is a great
opportunity to ask questions before
this mission is underway. Whod
like to go first?
A lot of hands shoot up; just about everyone in the
auditorium wants to ask questions.
KIRK (CONTD)
(pointing)
You, the lovely lady in the third
row.
The LOVELY LADY stands up, pleased to have been called on.
KIRK (CONTD)
Whats your question?
LOVELY LADY
Are you single?
This draws a lot of giggles and laughs from the crowd. Many
of the men present there dont look quite as pleased with it,
though. Kirk, however, is eating it up, responding with his
most dazzling and charming smile.
KIRK
Well, Im sorry to say that Im in
a long-term relationship... with
the Enterprise. Other than that,
yes, I am single.
(winks)
For now.
The wink has the desired reaction from the girl.
KIRK (CONTD)
Next question?
(surveys the room)
You, fifth row.
The person he calls on is, unsurprisingly, another woman,
this one bookish.

BOOKISH GIRL
Captain, how would you respond to
people who say that sending our
newest, most expensive ship on a
five year deep-space mission is a
huge mismanagement of resources?
This is not the type of question Kirk was expecting; he is
put off by it. We get the impression he calls on women
because he expects their questions to be easier to handle.
KIRK
Uh, I dont know of anyone who has
said that.
BOOKISH GIRL
I just did, captain.
KIRK
Well, youre misinformed. How is it
that people dont see how important
exploration is? What happened to
humanitys drive to discover the
unknown, to go where no man has
ever gone before? What happened to
that primal need to find all the
answers? Its that need that drove
us to the stars in the first place.
Its that need that has led us to
where we are today.
As we scan the audience we can see that this is not the sort
of response anyone was expecting from Kirk.
KIRK (CONTD)
(passion building)
Mankinds greatest achievements-flight, landing a man on the moon,
discovering the cure for polio,
these were all possible because
someone dared to explore beyond
what was known. I dont know what
well find out there. What I do
know is that if there is even the
slightest chance that something out
there might change everything we
know about... about everything. Say
what you will, but nothing about
that seems like a waste to me.

SCOTTY
Weve got most all of the munitions
and supplies aboard or ready to
move now. Were still waiting for
spare warp coils for the engine.
Should be here in two days.
KIRK
What? Two days? No, thats not
going to work. I want to leave
tomorrow, Scotty. Tomorrow.
SCOTTY
The warp coils have to be delivered
here from the other side of the
planet, Jim. And I dont know about
you, but I dont fancy the idea of
being out in the middle of unknown
space with a warp engine that cant
work if the coils burn out.
KIRK
Cant you just requisition the
coils from one of these other
ships? Were getting ready to
undertake the Federations first
ever five year exploratory mission.
I think we can get some special
treatment, dont you?
SCOTTY
Ill see what I can do, but Id
think youd appreciate the delay.
It gives you time to fill the
vacancy in your senior officers.
KIRK
(suspicious)
I dont have any vacancies in my
senior officers. Which senior
officer are we talking about?
SCOTTY
What, he didnt tell you yet?

SPOCK
Its alright. While the loss of my
planet still triggers emotional
responses within me, I have come to
be able to remember it fondly, as
well. However, we dont put the
same sort of emotional response in
the view of the heavens as you
humans seem to. Vulcan was located
in a different part of the galaxy,
so naturally the sky did not
display the same constellations as
Earth. That difference does not
sadden me, however.
UHURA
Really? You never returned to
Vulcan after traveling and looked
up and felt comforted by the
familiar sky?
SPOCK
I felt comfort returning to my
place of birth, a place I spent a
large portion of my life, but that
was not due to the sky.
Uhura slips her arms around Spock in a romantic gesture.
UHURA
Okay, okay, I get it; youre not
sentimental.
(smiles coyly)
Im sure I can think of one thing
you and I will both miss about

MCCOY

Im with a patient, Jim.
KIRK
You requested to be transferred

The STARFLEET FEMALE CADET looks between the two awkwardly.
Shes been caught in a moment between two good friends, and

FEMALE CADET
Im going to go...
She slips past Kirk and leaves. To give credit to how angry
Kirk is, he does not even glance at the cadet, despite how
pretty she is. All of his attention is on McCoy.
MCCOY
Youre scaring off my patients,
Jim! I was offered the position of
Assistant Director here. Its a
huge step up for me, Jim. More pay-KIRK
I cant believe youd rather take a
job on Earth over the chance to be
part of the first ever deep space
exploration of this extent. This is
going to be in the history books,
Bones.
MCCOY
I told you not to call me that. You

BARNETT
To put it simply, the Enterprise is
the fastest ship weve got, and the

mission that is somewhat timelimited. Youll be escorting
medical supplies to Makus III.
KIRK
There isnt another ship that can

BARNETT

KIRK
Excuse me? We dont need a

THADDEUS
It isnt a matter of whether you
need me or not, captain. My orders
come directly from Starfleet high
command. Theyve decided that since
the mission youre undertaking is
one thats never been attempted
before, the state of mind of the
crew cannot be guaranteed. Five
years is a long time to be on a
ship. They-- the admirals, I mean-decided that assigning a counselor
would be a wise choice.

SCOTTY
I spoke too soon. I knew I was
speaking too soon and I spoke
anyway.
MCCOY
I should have stopped you.
SPOCK
We need to lighten the weight of
the shuttle. Doctor Archibald, take
us ten meters over the ground.
Allow gravity to do its work to
conserve power. Mr. Boma, your
assistance please. I need you to
open the door of the shuttle.
Spock drags Latimers now-covered body towards the shuttle
door.
SCOTTY
Im afraid Latimers body wont be
enough, commander.
SPOCK
Indeed, Mr. Scott. Thatis why I
will be joining him.
SCOTTY
Are ye mad?
MCCOY
Spock, wait. Ill go. Im best able
to keep myself alive for as long as
I can.
BOMA
Sorry doctor, Im going. All I need
are a few rations and a phaser.
Just make sure to come back and get
me after the Enterprise rendezvous.
Spock carries Latimers body to the now-open door.
SPOCK
Your decision is admirable, Mr.
Boma, and will be reflected in the
log. But as commanding officer, the
decision is mine. I am the most
capable of surviving on my own. Nor
is their time for debate.

BARNETT
Relax, captain. I said hes tried.
He didnt succeed. The admiralty
believes you are the perfect
candidate for this mission now more
than ever, after your handling of
the Galileo Seven incident.
Congratulations, captain. As soon
as your ship is fully supplied,
youre heading out.
Barnett and Kirk shake hands, Kirks happiness making Barnett
happy.
KIRK
Thank you, sir.
BARNETT
Good luck.

Okay.
(a deep breath)
Uhura, open a ship-wide channel.
UHURA
Channel open, sir.
KIRK
Attention crew of the U. S. S.
Enterprise. This is your captain
speaking. This is it, people.
All eyes on the bridge turn to Kirk. Every single person up
there feels his enthusiasm, shares it. This is a huge deal
for everyone.
KIRK (CONTD)
In just a few moments we are going
to activate our engines and head
off. I dont know what were going
to find beyond the edges of
explored space. Thats part of the
fun. What I do know is that I
couldnt ask for a better crew to
undertake this with. This is the
best crew in Starfleet, and from
today, were going to prove it.
Prepare for departure. That is all.
The people on the bridge applaud the speech.
KIRK (CONTD)
Alright, Mr. Sulu, take us out at
top speed.
CHEKOV
Ver are ve going, sir?
KIRK
Take me somewhere no ones ever
been before.
CHEKOV
Vatever you say, keptin.
