This Is My Story

~Cantata~
This Sunday 8 : 3 0 & 1 0 : 4 5
Hear true stories of Gods help
when people in our church felt
abandoned in pain, in need,
in grief and in tragedy.
And hear music of inspiration and
hope!

Pastors Corner
Thanks for all your well wishes to us for a great vacation, and indeed we had one the
week after Easter in the mountains of Colorado. There was plenty of snow to go downhill
skiing, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing, but of course the best part of it was
reconnecting with our two daughters and their boyfriends.
I was delighted to hear of the excellent job Rich Poole did in the pulpit last Sunday, as did
Linda Kissel in presiding over Holy Communion. One of the best parts of a relaxing
vacation is in knowing you are leaving things in capable hands! What was upsetting upon
our return was hearing about the slates on the south side of the Sanctuary roof coming off
in high winds and damaging the cars of three of our members. By Monday, the roof was fixed and it
appeared that we had moved past the damage, at least to the roof.
Then came the extremely high winds and drenching rains of Thursday afternoon, and we had a whole new
situation on our hands. This time, the winds dug into the slate on the north side of the Sanctuary, and
tossed them up to 200 feet away from the building, all the way to the far edge of the borough parking lot
which adjoins our property. Several more cars were damaged by the slates, and the wind removed almost
one fourth of all the slates on the north side of the Sanctuary. Many of them were driven with great force
into the rubber roofs we have over Oberholtzer Hall and which cover most of our office building next door.
In addition, the wind blew some of the slate pieces into windows which protect our stained glass windows,
and also into the asphalt roof over Fellowship Hall. In short, much damage was done. Fortunately, the
same company which fixed the slate roof on Monday was back again on Thursday and made emergency
repairs. Our insurance company was contacted immediately, and we are praying for quick resolution to our
insurance claim. I solicit each of your prayers for this situation, and want to thank Connie Moyer, Chris
Perfetti, and some of our JAM youth for the quick and efficient clean-up of scattered roof slates on the
property.

We're looking forward to a GREAT Sunday at ESUMC, as the choir and

other music and drama volunteers offer a "homegrown" cantata. This is
not a generic cantata in a box, but one which weaves together stories
and drama from our own congregation. We're calling it, "This is My
Story," which is a phrase borrowed from the great Fanny Crosby hymn,
Blessed Assurance, and you will not want to miss it!
Also on Sunday, please look for the new discipleship offerings which will
start on April 24. You can sign up this Sunday or next Sunday during our
Wellness Expo which takes place in Fellowship Hall on April 17. One of
the classes will be another New Members Class, so please email me if
you're interested in becoming a member of the church.
Finally, I want to say a word about the $20 Challenge and to keep that in
front of us. I am praying about how each of you will use the $20 you were
given in mid-March. If you were not here that Sunday (March 13), we do
have a few spare $20's to give out. Please call the church office. Some of
you have mentioned that you are making things for the Challenge and
need a venue in which to sell the items. In speaking with some of our
leadership, we thought it would be great to offer one day for you to be
able to do so. It's near the end of the Challenge and just before Mother's
Day: Sunday May 1. Put that date on your calendar, and we'll see what
sort of entrepreneurial spirit God creates among us that day! I'll see you
this Sunday.

Read the Bible in a Year

This week as we head into the book of Deuteronomy, we witness the

Hebrew nation beginning its journey across the Jordan River to seek the
Promised Land. And the word that keeps coming to my mind from these
scriptures is faith. Faith, while easy to talk about, is sometimes difficult to
put into action. But we discover within scripture many examples of victory
over trials that were realized only through faith in God.
I believe that in our times, faith is the most underused asset of the
Church. However, there is hope (tons and tons of hope) because when
we read Scripture and pray through it, we activate our faith and this
engages us. It becomes personal, changing who we are and thus, how
we live our daily lives.
One of my favorite scriptures that can guide us into activating our faith
comes from Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Take these words to heart:
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home
and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get
up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your
foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your
gates.
Moses knew what he was talking about. He struggled as we all do,
with the flaws of our human nature. But undergirding his every effort was
the strong band of faith that held him up, directed his steps, and grew him
into the leader that God knew him to be.
So my question for us today is this: In the challenges that we face in
life how will we put our faith into action?
So my friends read on.

Stephen Ministry

Hurting?
Think Stephen Ministry! Be
receptive to receiving care should the
need arise. Its not a sign of
weakness to ask for help when
difficult times arise. God created us
not only to give help to others, but
also to receive help when we need it.
Everyone, at some point in their life,
faces difficulties and could benefit
from the care of a Stephen Minister.
Why walk this difficult road alone?

A letter from M.O.M = Military Outreach Ministry

Dear ESUMC Congregation:
Another holiday has come and gone, as well as spring break.
Spring break; a time for the overworked and overstressed to head to the
beaches of Miami, Cancun, or some other exotic destination to unwind for a
well-deserved mental break.
In today's military, our young men and women gain rank by taking college
courses while at the same time serving our country on beaches like Omaha,
Iwo Jima, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc...
One such brave young man is Alexander Pappalardo, United States Air
Force, son of Lynn and Peter Pappalardo. Alex is currently deployed in the
Middle East, a.k.a. "the sandbox".
I encourage each of you to pray, not only for Alex, but also for all those
around him, and for his family awaiting his safe and long-awaited return
home.
If you have, or know of someone, in the military, and would like to have
them included in this ministry, please contact Randy Johns at
superuncle113@yahoo.com.
We'd like to send Alex a care package on behalf of ESUMC. More
information coming soon.
May God protect Alex as he protects us.
Love - M.O.M.

The next hike will be on Sunday, April 24th. Please meet

at 12:15 in the parking lot. We leave at 12:30
SHARP. (note new times). Please pencil in above date
and commit to this very worthwhile activity.
Any questions, call Bob at (570) 223-7076..
