A Design Framework for Next Generation Virtual Learning

Environments utilising Augmented Reality Technology

The Centre for Research in Game Technology & Interactive Systems is offering a
Research Postgraduate Scholarship to investigate A Design Framework for Next
Generation Virtual Learning Environments utilising Augmented Reality Technology.
This research programme will investigate the cognitive constraints associated with
learning within the context of presenting educational material using emerging
Augmented Reality (AR) systems. The candidate will be required to conceive and test a
design framework that incorporates such constraints across the visual and auditory
domains, and identify key design protocols that embrace pedagogical principles.
Technological advancements far outpace the establishment of fundamental design
frameworks. As Virtual Reality Head-Mounted Displays are about to hit mainstream
consumer markets, Augmented Reality equivalents that combine the real and virtual
worlds are concurrently being developed and have obvious educational applications.
Compatibility with human perceptual and cognitive processes is central to designing
any digital interface system whereby human users are presented with dynamically
changing information, especially where the acquisition of new knowledge is the key
objective. This research programme aims to contribute to a robust implementation of
AR technology in education by underscoring cognitive compatibities and helping
designers avoid scenarios such as cognitive overload.
During the process of blueprinting the design framework, an AR-based prototype
system will be implemented to allow for user-study testing of the framework.
Specifically, cross-modal interaction and cognitive overload during knowledge
acquisition tasks will be studied. A mixed method approach to study design and
statistical analysis will be required.
Scholarship Conditions: Fees and 6,000 stipend per annum (x 2 years)
