Windows 7 is supported starting with MyLabDesk version 5.10, available
from MyLab software STD 10.10. Previous versions can be installed
with a work around described later in this how to guide.
Windows Vista is supported starting with MyLabDesk version 2.00 (build
5.0.191.0). MyLab software STD 6.12 release (MyLabDesk rev 1.17
build 4.1.139.82) does not support Vista. Check the installation README
file to confirm the supported operating systems.
MyLabDesk does not install on the Mac operating systems. However, be
aware that Mac machines support dual-booting technology which allows
the user to boot Windows or Mac operating systems; Boot Camp &
Parallels.
Parallels Be sure to check the recommended specifications to ensure
CPU, RAM, Video RAM is achieved.

Can I connect MyLab / MyLabDesk

MyLabDesk to my EMR (Electronic Medical Record
software)?
EMRs typically cannot accept images directly from modalities due to the
lack of a DICOM server on the EMR. Most EMRs can manually upload
files into the patient record. MyLab / MyLabDesk can be used to
provide images and reports in a variety of formats which may be manually
uploaded by the EMR user.

I receive a system error when trying to open a study or browse to an ARCHIVE

folder.
In general, this is an error due to the programs inability to read or write
to/from a device. Check the read/write/modify permissions of the folder or
the USER. Be sure to install / run MyLabDesk
MyLabDesk by a user who has
administrator permissions.
permissions
MyLabDesk requires read, write and modify security permissions for the
C:\\MyLabDeskData
C:
MyLabDeskData & C:\
C:\Program Files\
Files\MyLabDesk
MyLabDesk folders in addition
to an ARCHIVE folder the user browses. If MyLab or another user has
access to the same study, you may experience the error if attempting to
delete or modify the study.
Which folder
folder do I share in order for MyLab to transfer directly to the
MyLabDesk
MyLabDesk program?
Share the C:\
C:\MyLabDeskData
MyLabDeskData folder (the ROOT folder of ARCHIVE
folder). Within this folder, there is the folder ARCHIVE which MyLab
modifies by reading and writing the us_archive.xml file (the master
database file).
What is the largest size of MyLabDesk
MyLabDesk archive?
MyLabDesk is designed to support the same size of archive as the
MyLab; so ~ 4040-120 Gbytes,
Gbytes however larger archive sizes are not
uncommon. The larger the database the more likely the data is to become
corrupt and fail. Running the Recover Archive utility is VERY
IMPORTANT (see Archive Maintenance) as the size of the archive
increases. Biosound recommends keeping the archive small in size (<
120 Gbytes) and running the recover archive once per week.

Questions? Comments? email: mylabdesk@biosound.com

Will MyLabDesk
MyLabDesk read DICOM images? What type of images does MyLab and
MyLabDesk
MyLabDesk export?
MyLab and MyLabDesk will not display/read DICOM studies.
The COPY function is the only format the MyLab and MyLabDesk will
read/write/modify.

Using COPY will produce a folder called Archive. It opens with

MyLab or MyLabDesk only.
Using DICOM will produce a folder called Images and a file named
DICOMDIR. It opens by a PACS software system or DICOM viewer
software.
Using EXPORT will produce a folder named with the patients first and
last name. The exported images open with Microsoft Paint, Imaging,
Media Player, other default or specified PC applications.

Can you tell me the average size of the exams?

The typical Cardiac exam (normal):
COPY
= 39 MByte
DICOM = 48 MByte *
EXPORT = 52 MByte
One loop (3 R-R cycle) and one still image:
COPY Format
Still = ~604 Kbyte
Loop = ~2.3 Mbyte

Maintaining Your ARCHIVE Data

Maintaining your MyLabDesk application is made easy with software tools from
Microsoft and third-party vendors. It is very important to design a data backup
strategy. An example:

Use Microsofts backup program to automatically backup the entire

computer as often as required (once per week, for instance). Destination
may be an external USB hard drive device or networked hard drive.
MyLabDesks COPY function will create an ARCHIVE folder compatible
with MyLab systems and MyLabDesk software (always check which
version!). Use COPY to create an archive of your studies (perhaps
selecting a month of studies). Select your PCs desktop as the COPY
destination and burn the created Archive folder to DVD with Windows or
your favorite third-party DVD burning software. Label the DVD with the
dates of the selected exams (Month of September, for instance.). Place
the DVD into a plastic sleeve or DVD binder and you have an offline
storage solution.
o Biosound recommends the use of high quality CDs and DVDs such

as the Tayio Yuden.

Yuden
It is up to you to plan and execute the backup strategy that best fits
fits your
companys practices.
practices. When in doubt, consult with local IT support in your
area to create a custom data backup solution.
solution.

Please Run Archive Recover (See MyLabDesk How To Guide Pg 13) once a
week to optimize the MyLab/MyLab Desk database. Archive Recover
rebuilds the vital database files. This should be done when there are no users
accessing the data folder (through the MyLabDesk network).

Burn DVDs in COPY format once a week or month, your choice. The
COPY format is the most flexible, allowing the possibility to convert the
studies into DICOM/EXPORT in the future.

DVD formats supported: DVD-r, DVD+r. The cost is the same. DVD-r
offers only a fractional speed improvement over DVD+r.

Backup PCs on a regular basis (once a week) either locally to USB or to

network. If the PC begins to act up simply restore the PC and continue
working.

Windows offers a backup utility or third-party software/services.

Keep a limited number of studies on the MyLab (only 2-3 month's worth
normally). I suggest at the beginning of the third month, be sure the first
month's studies are archived (using COPY to DVD or network) and delete
them from the machine. You may choose to keep a USB hard drive
connected the MyLab as a short term reference.

USB hard drives tested: Maxtor 300 Gbyte, Seagate 300 Gbyte, Western
Digital My Book 1 TByte. Although these drives offer HUGE storage, it is
better to keep the archive sub-divided into folders by month (for
instance). MyLab/MyLab Desk will respond faster and offer fewer
problems in managing the data.

The ultimate in digital data management is to have a detailed disaster recovery

plan in place for all data of the business. That plan is more detailed but also
includes off-site data backups (either taking USB drives home each night) or
subscribing to a virtual storage network. Most people like the USB or digital tape
solution because of cost.

Digital Workflow with MyLab & MyLabDesk

MyLabDesk software offers viewing, reporting and archiving in a user interface
which is similar to the MyLab ultrasound machine. The software allows the user
a full range of clinical application measurements which until recently were only
available on the MyLab ultrasound machine. With MyLabDesk, clinical
measurement packages are available for use on archives located on network
shared resources or appliances, USB devices or the local hard drive.
MyLabDesk software provides other convenient options such as multiple printer
support options and multiple print layout configurations, three image format
export options, network file sharing for access to a common database and no
license stipulations for multiple installations.

MyLab digital workflow offers the user, system and office administrators many
choices for digital transfer and storage of exams. Efficiency is increased with the
ability to connect the MyLab and MyLabDesk via a local network. Stand-alone
servers, network appliances and USB hard drives, together with managed
integration, offer even the novice user the tools to network, archive and share
data.

If you are planning to integrate MyLab into your office network:

Contact your local IT support for initial network setup and advice for
automated backups.
If proficient in networking terms and techniques, MyLab offers standard
Windows networking interfaces.
In any case, plan ahead for data recovery. Backup your systems data
often.
Protect the data with the appropriate security tools available from your PC
and software vendors.
NOTE: Any peripheral device which installs drivers must be supported
and installed by a Biosound Esaote representative.
If you have any questions regarding MyLabs digital workflow or
MyLabDesk, please e-mail your questions to
MyLabDesk@Biosound.com.

NOTE: MyLabDesk is designed to read MyLab archive files from software at

or below the currently-installed version number. Archives from devices above the
currently-installed MyLabDesk software will not be read.
NOTE: MyLabDesk will attempt to read an older archive and may do so if the
currently-installed version is greater than the software which created the archive;
once it has read the archive, the archive format is changed to match the recent
software and will be UNREADABLE by the original MyLabDesk version. It is
important to make a copy of the Archive folder in order to maintain the original
archive configuration and compatibility with older MyLabDesk versions.

Network Configuration
MyLab and MyLabDesk offer the user a configuration menu to map (connect
to) a shared folder over the LAN (local area network) network which allows
MyLabDesk the ability to open studies through the network from the network
shared drive.
A basic knowledge of Windows and networking is required, as well as the
network name or IP address of the PC hosting the shared folder and the name of
the folder share; for instance, \\192.168.1.66\MyLabDeskData. And finally, the
user name and password with permissions to read/write/modify the network
share 192.168.1.66\administrator and associated admin password.

Configuring the IP Address of the PC

The IP Address is the set of numbers which identify the PC to the members of a
network. By default, Windows PCs are set to obtain an IP address automatically
(known as DHCP). It is also possible to manually configure the PC to a known
set of numbers (known as STATIC IP).
To configure the IP address in Windows XP:

Click START.
Click CONTROL PANEL.
Click NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
Double-click LOCAL AREA CONNECTION.
In the General tab, click INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) and
PROPERTIES.
Click OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICLALY (for DHCP) OR Click
USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS and manually enter.
If unsure about IP address, contact your network administrator.

Configuring the Windows Network Share

There are several choices when choosing a network share

To copy studies directly to a users PC: share the C:\

C:\MyLabDeskData
MyLabDeskData
folder. MyLabDesk will automatically update the subfolder ARCHIVE of
the C:\MyLabDeskData directory (folder).
To copy studies to a network share allowing multiple users access: choose
a PC hard drive or USB drive, server OR network archive storage (NAS)
device. MyLabDesk and MyLab setup are identical.
We recommend local IT support for advanced network sharing. We are
available via email MyLabdesk@biosound.com for assistance via email,
online meetings and phone support.
We recommend, before creating a shared folder, that a new user is
created. The new user can be managed easily and used by MyLab to
connect to the shared folder. This new user should be allowed FULL
CONTROL permissions which, in turn, will allow MyLab and users
connecting as this user to have proper use of the MyLab studies.
For more information, please search using your favorite search engine for
the plethora of online tutorials and documentation on creating a Windows
shared folder for your network and your operating system.

MyLabDesk
MyLabDesk does NOT connect to DICOM server software and does NOT
perform DICOM network transfers (DICOM Store, etc). MyLabDesk may be
used to produce unique DICOM archives; DICOMDIR files and IMAGES folders
for selected studies. You may burn these files to CD and thus produce a DICOM
compliant archive or use a PACS or DICOM reader to reference and upload the
studies.
For information on connecting your MyLab unit to a DICOM server, please email MyLabdesk@biosound.com for more information or see the MyLab User
Manual.
DICOM Conformance statements are available for MyLab ultrasound units:

Appendix A - EMR Integration

MyLabDesk does not offer an HL7 interface, the official protocol used by EMRs,
however there is an option to print an electronic document and manually upload
and attach the to the patient record.
Try out several of the free software installations available for .pdf printing. There
are many free and commercial options available. The software installs on a PC
and acts like a printer. In fact, you are printing an electronic document.
MyLabDesk recognizes the pdf printer and sends the report and images to the
pdf printer which then prompts you for the destination folder to save the file.
Electronic documents can be saved with security options and encrypted to
protect patient privacy.

Appendix B - Technical Note: MyLab Preset Editing with

MyLabDesk
Software:

All MyLab and MyLabDesk software

As a MyLab user, you may find it helpful to use MyLabDesk in order to

add/edit free text observations, edit measurement labels, report headings
etcetera, in order to customize reports. Updating the MyLab with the new
presets is simple. This document describes how to import the presets after
editing the settings in MyLabDesk .
Material needed: One (1) USB memory stick or USB hard drive. The USB
device must NOT use U3 technology! The U3 technology will not allow the
MyLab to save or load presets. Remove the U3 technology by visiting the
uninstall page of the U3 website: http://www.u3.com/uninstall/.
Step 1: Save the PRESETS from the MyLab to a USB memory stick.

Insert a USB stick into the MyLab.

Press MENU.
Select PRESETS.
Select SAVE PRESETS.
Allow time for the MyLab to save the machines presets to USB.
Remove the USB device when finished.

Step 2: Replace the presets with the current (edited) files from your PC running
MyLabDesk .

Double-click or Open My Computer.

Double-click or Open C:\MyLabDeskData folder.
Double-click or Open the PRESETS folder.
Right-Click to select the specific preset you are interested in importing into
MyLab.
Select COPY.
View the contents of the USB device (you should see the
MyLabPresets folder and a DATA file).
Double-click or Open MyLabPresets.
Click to select the specific preset you wish to update.
Press DELETE on the keyboard to remove the application preset from the
USB device.
Click EDIT and PASTE to paste the new application preset folder onto the
USB device.
Remove the USB device when the copy is finished.

Appendix C MyLab ARCHIVE Differences

Systems Affected: MyLab70XV?, MyLab 50 XV?, MyLab30, MyLab25
MyLab 25,30,50XV Software: 8.x, 7.x
MyLab 70XV Software: 3.0
Software:
MyLabDesk Version 2.0 build(s) and prior releases
MyLab and MyLab Desks ARCHIVE folders are unique for each software
installation. The differences in the structure of the ARCHIVE may prevent access
by systems running MyLab STD 6.12 and prior releases. Take care in
understanding these differences when accessing patient studies created by
MyLab ultrasound machines running different software levels.
The incompatibility of the different software versions (STD 6.12 & prior and STD
7.X & higher) is true for writeable/modifiable archive locations: such as local hard
drives, USB devices or network shares where the newer software may change
the format of the original ARCHIVE structure and therefore, preventing the
previous (older version) software access and providing the following error
message:

MyLabDesk version 3.xx/2.xx (available from MyLab STD 8.x/7.x) shows the
following message / warning when attempting to access an older ARCHIVE:

MyLab 6.12 ARCHIVE, once accessed by a 8/7.xx

MyLab/MyLabDesk will change the format from 6.12 to 7.xx making
the ARCHIVE incompatible with the STD 6.12 MyLab/MyLabDesk .

Example: One or several MyLab and/or MyLabDesk installations

accessing the shared archive folder on a network.

MyLab/MyLabDesk can access an ARCHIVE on a USB device or

network share(s) when the ARCHIVE has been created by a machine with
the same software release (STD X.XX).

Questions? Comments? email: mylabdesk@biosound.com

MyLab/MyLabDesk STD 6.12 (and below) cannot access an ARCHIVE

on a USB device or network share(s) when the ARCHIVE has been
created by a machine with a more recent version of software; release (for
instance, STD 7.1 being accessed by STD 6.12).

In the above example, MyLab with STD 7.1 may access but not alter the
STD 6.12 archive using the read only option. MyLab and/or
MyLab
MyLabDesk from STD 6.12 do not offer a read only option; so
accessing older archives (from previous releases such as STD4.x, STD5.x)
will always change the format to the STD 6.12. This issue was addressed
in the 7.X release with the read only option.

MyLab/MyLabDesk from STD 7.X does offer the read only option.
The read only option allows MyLab/MyLabDesk to access the
ARCHIVE folder and allow you to view studies but not modify the studies
(add measurements to the report, for example). You may use the COPY
button to copy the study to the LOCAL ARCHIVE; which then allows
modifications to take place.

CONTINUE will PERMENATELY CHANGE the structure of the ARCHIVE

folder.

OPEN AS READREAD-ONLY will NOT change the ARCHIVE folder and allow
older units access.

A workaround solution is to create multiple network shares; one for each

archive type. MyLab supports up to five (5) different, shared network
locations.
o If MyLab #1 is at STD6.12, create access to a unique network
archive. Then, if accessing the archive with a newer version of
MyLabDesk , use the OPEN AS READREAD-ONLY option to access
and COPY files to the LOCAL ARCHIVE of the MyLabDesk used
to view the files.

Questions? Comments? email: mylabdesk@biosound.com

o You may also install the STD6.12 MyLabDesk on another PC or

the same PC only on a different hard drive partition or separate
USB device. For example, the STD 7.X MyLabDesk installed on
the C:\ drive and the STD6.12 MyLab Desk may be installed on a
USB device, ex. G:\. This is an advanced example, but is possible,
allowing measurements and reporting which the OPEN AS READREADONLY option does not.

NOTE: It is not possible to write a report on a READ-ONLY archive. First,

use COPY to copy the studies to the LOCAL ARCHIVE in order to allow
measurements and reporting. Of course, the study will assume the format
of the LOCAL ARCHIVE.
