1) A production facility employs 20 workers on the day shift, 15 workers on the night shift, and 10
workers on the weekend shift. A quality control consultant is to select 6 of these workers for indepth reviews. Suppose the selection is made in such a way that any particular group of 6 workers
has the same chance of being selected as does of any other group (drawing 6 workers without
replacement from among 45)
a) What is the probability that all 6 selected workers will be from the day shift?
b) What is the probability that all selected 6 workers will be from the same shift?
c) What is the probability that at least two different shifts will be represented among the selected
workers?

2) A firm employs 10 programmers, 8 system analysts, 4 computer engineers and 3 statisticians. A

team is to be chosen to handle a new long-term project. The team will consist of 3 programmers, 2
system analysts, 2 computer engineers and 1 statisticians.
a) In how many ways can the team be chosen?
b) If the customer insists that the one particular engineer with whom he or she has worked before be
assigned to the project, in how many ways can the team be chosen?

3) Grasshopers are distributed at random in a large field at an average of 2 per square meters. How
large should the radius R of a circular sampling region be taken so that the probability of finding at
least one in the region equals 0.99?

4) Suppose that 30 % of all students who want to buy a textbook for a particular course want a new
copy, whereas the other 70 % want a used copy.
a. Consider randomly selecting 20 purchasers, what is the probability that more than 10 students want
a new textbook?
b.What is the probability that you will find a student who wants to buy a used copy on the 5 th person
you talk to?
c. What is the average number of people you should talk to find 5 students who want a new copy?

5) The maximum intensity of the next earthquake in a city may be classified as Low (L), Medium
(M) or high (H) with probabilities, 0.75, 0.2, 0.05 respectively. Suppose also that buildings may be
divided into two types; poorly constructed (P) and well constructed (W). About 20 % of all buildings
in the city are known to be poorly constructed. A well constructed building will survive a low
intensity (L) earthquake, but it may be damaged when subjected to a medium or high intensity
earthquake with probability of 0.05 and 0.2 respectively.
a) What is the probability that a well constructed building will be damaged during the next
earthquake?
b) It is estimated that a poorly constructed building will be damaged with a probability of 0.10,
0.50, 0.90 when subjected to a low, medium, or high intensity earthquake respectively. What
proportion of the buildings will be damaged during the next earthquake?
c) If a building in the city is damaged after an earthquake, what is the probability that the
building was poorly constructed?
