Argument
My project is named :New York Fashion Week. New York Fashion Week, held in February
and September of each year, is a semi-annual series of events (generally lasting 79 days)
3
when international fashion collections are shown to buyers, the press and the general public. It
consists of numerous branded events, including New York City Fashion Week Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week New York and MADE Fashion Week, as well as numerous independent fashion
productions around town.It is one of four major fashion weeks in the world, collectively
known as the "Big 4", along with those in Paris, London and Milan.
The main reason why I chose this topic is that my passion is fashion and I believe that New
York Fashion Week is the most brilliant fashion event in the world. All famous producers and
fashion houses in the world are taking part to this event.Ralph Laurent Polo, Michael Kors,
Victorina Beackam, Carolina Herrera, Calvin Klein and more famous producers are always
present to New York Fashion Week, they always surprise the public with inovative clothing
and thats why they are my favourite fashion producers.
A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows
fashion designers, brands or "houses" to display their latest collections in runway shows and
buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, these events let the
industry know what's "in" and what's "out" for the season.
My work is divided in three big chapters, each of them having sub-chapters. The first chapter,
named Fashion Week is about the concept itself, what it means, the places where is held and
also about its history and founder, Eleanor Lambert. Fashion historian John A. Tiffany was
mentored by Lambert. Lambert created the Council of Fashion Designers of America. One
source credits Lambert as "she was a factor in the gross domestic product of the U.S., and
even of the world" for her influence in the fashion industry.Lambert's influence is described as
exogenous event risk in mathematical modeling. The most prominent fashion weeks are held
in the four fashion capitals of the world:Milan, Paris, New York and London. Other
notable week-long fashion events are held in cities around the world as Porto (Portugal
Fashion), Rome, So Paulo(So Paulo Fashion Week) or Berlin (Berlin Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week).
The second chapter New York Fashion Week is about the Fashion Week that takes place in
New York, which is the most important Fashion Week, it contains information about its
origins, locations and history. The first New York Fashion Week (which was then called "Press
Week") was the world's first ever organized fashion week. First held in 1943, the event was
designed to attract attention away from the French fashion during World War II, when fashion
industry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion shows.
In the last chapter Fashion Design you will find information about the concept of fashion
design and ready to wear clothes. Ready-to-wear or prt--porter is the term for factorymadeclothing, sold in finished condition, in standardized sizes, as distinct from made to
measure or bespoke clothing tailored to a particular person's frame. Off-the-peg is sometimes
used for items which are not clothing, such as handbags. Ready-to-wear has rather different
connotations in the spheres of fashion and classic clothing. In the fashion industry, designers
produce ready-to-wear clothing intended to be worn without significant alteration, because
clothing made to standard sizes fits most people. They use standard patterns, factory
4
equipment, and faster construction techniques to keep costs low, compared to a custom-sewn
version of the same item. Some fashion houses and fashion designers produce mass-produced
and industrially manufactured ready-to-wear lines, while others offer garments that, while not
unique, are produced in limited numbers.
Introduction
A Fashion Week is a fashion industry event, typically named after the host city or major
commercial sponsor, lasting four to ten days. It is held so that fashion designers or "houses"
are able showcase their "collections" for either Spring or Fall seasons. "Spring" fashion weeks
are held in January through March and "Fall" fashion weeks are held between September and
November, since they must be held a few months in advance of the season to allow the press
and buyers a chance to preview fashion designs for the following season. This is also to allow
time for retailers to arrange to purchase or incorporate the designers into their retail
marketing. They are attended by buyers for major stores, the media, celebrities, and members
of the entertainment industry. The highlight is usually the famous "runway show", where the
top designers show and well-known models are featured. Men's and Children's fashion shows
are often part of the week's activities, especially in the prominent cities. In years past, fashion
weeks were predominantly" for "the trade only", however, today they are entertainment and
media events. They may incorporate live musicians, celebrity guests, lavish galas and charity
events, and a few allow the public to purchase special passes to see the see the runway shows
or attend expositions which display handbags, jewelery, shoes, hats and cosmetics. Many
important fashion design schools participate in the shows, as well. Some fashion weeks can be
genre-specific, such as a Pret-a-porter (ready-to-wear) fashion week, Couture (one-of-a-kind
designer original) Fashion Week or a Bridal Fashion Week. The most prominent and legendary
Fashion Weeks are the following:London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion
Week, Los Angeles Mercedes Fashion Week, New York's Olympus Fashion Week, Tokyo
Fashion Week. There following Fashion Weeks are held in cities where local style typically
tends to set international fashion trends or the fashion industry is important to local
commerce:
Auckland Fashion Week, Amsterdam Fashion Week, Budapest Fashion Week, Chicago
Fashion Week, Cleveland Fashion Week, Dublin Fashion Week, Hong Kong Fashion Week,
India Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week, Oslo Fashion Week, Singapore Fashion Week.

1. History
There are many Fashion weeks into the world but the most important is the Fashion Week on
Paris. In 1945, the first New York Fashion Week was held, with one main purpose: to distract
attention from French fashion during World War II, when workers in the fashion industry
were unable to travel to Paris. This was an opportune moment, as "Before World War II,
American designers were thought to be reliant on French couture for inspiration."The fashion
publicist Eleanor Lambert organized an event she called Press Week to showcase American
designers for fashion journalists, who had previously ignored their works. The Press Week
was a success, and, as a result,
magazines like Vogue (which were
normally filled with French designs)
began to feature more and more
American innovations. Until 1994,
shows were held in different
locations, such as hotels, or lofts.
Eventually, after a structural accident
at a Michael Kors show, the event
moved to Bryant Park, behind the
New York Public Library, where it
remained until 2010, when the shows
relocated to Lincoln Center.

staged, and often held in the shops restaurant during lunch or teatime. These shows were
usually more theatrical than those of today, heavily based upon a single theme, and
accompanied with a narrative commentary. The shows were hugely popular, enticing crowds
in their thousands crowds so large, that stores in New York in the fifties had to obtain a
license to have live models.

2. Founder
Eleanor Lambert Berkson (August 10, 1903 October 7, 2003) was a central figure in the
American fashion and public relations industries.
Lambert was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana. She attended the John Herron School of Art and
the Chicago Art Institute to study fashion.Lambart wanted to be a sculptor but went into
advertising. She started at an advertising agency in Manhattan, dealing mostly with artists and
art galleries.

In 1965, she was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to the National Council on the Arts
of the National Endowment for the Arts.In 1962, she organized the Council of Fashion
Designers of America (CFDA) and stayed an honorary member until her death in 2003.
In 2001, the CFDA created The Eleanor Lambert Award, that is presented for a unique
contribution to the world of fashion and/or deserves the industrys special recognition.
Months before she died, she had left her International Best Dressed List to four of Vanity
Fairs editors.Shortly after her last public appearance at New York Fashion Week in
September, Lambert died in 2003 at the age of 100.Shortly after her death her grandson,
Moses Berkson, completed a documentary film film about her life.

3. Schedule
New York, London, Milan and Paris each host a womenswear fashion week twice a year with
New York beginning each season and the other cities following in the aforementioned order.
London, Milan and Paris host menswear showcases, as does Florence.
There are two major seasons per year - Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. For
womenswear, the Autumn/Winter shows always start in New York in February and end in
Paris in March. Spring/Summer shows start in New York in September and end in Paris in
October. Menswear Autumn/Winter shows start in January in London and Milan for typically
less than a week followed by another short week in Paris. Menswear Spring/Summer shows
occur in June. Womenswear haute couture shows happen in Paris following the Menswear
Paris shows. Due to Chambre Syndicale rules, haute couture can only be shown in Paris.
More and more designers have shown inter-seasonal collections between the traditional
Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. These collections are usually more commercial
than the main season collections and help shorten the customer's wait for new season clothes.
The inter-seasonal collections are Resort/Cruise (before Spring/Summer) and Pre-Fall (before
Autumn/Winter). There is no fixed schedule for these shows in any of the major fashion
capitals but they typically happen three months after the main season shows. Some designers
show their inter-seasonal collections outside their home city. For example, Karl Lagerfeld has
shown his Resort and Pre-Fall collections for Chanel in cities such as Moscow, Los Angeles
and Monte Carlo instead of Paris. Many designers also put on presentations as opposed to
traditional shows during Resort and Pre-Fall either to cut down costs or because they feel the
clothes can be better understood in this medium.
Some fashion weeks can be genre-specific, such as a Christian Fashion Week (values-based),
Miami Fashion Week (swimwear), Rio Summer (swimwear), Prt-a-Porter (ready-to-wear)
Fashion Week, Couture in Paris (one-of-a-kind designer original) Fashion Week and Bridal
Fashion Week, while Portland (Oregon, USA) Fashion Week shows some eco-friendly
designers. Bread and Butter Berlin hosts the leading fashion show for everyday fashion.
I.
London Fashion Week is a clothing trade show held in London twice each year, in February
and September. It is one of the "Big Four" fashion weeks, along with the New York, Milan
and Paris.Organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) for the London Development
Agency with help from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, London Fashion
Week first took place in 1984. It currently ranks alongside New York, Paris and Milan as one
of the 'Big Four' fashion weeks. It presents itself to funder as a trade event that also attracts
significant press attention and
benefit to taxpayers. It is also able
to get an official sponsorship from
Mercedes-Benz,a
worldwide
known automobile brand and
global hairdressing company Toni
& Guy. It states that it is attended
by over 5,000 press and buyers,
and has estimated orders of 40
million or 100 million. A retailfocused event, London Fashion
Weekend, takes place immediately Figure

afterwards at the same venue and is x/frow_main_fashion_week-428894.jpg
open to the general public.
The UK fashion industry is estimated to support 797,000 jobs (source: Oxford Economics
2014). This is a decrease of 2.3% from 2009.
The current venue for most of the "on-schedule" events is Somerset House in central London,
where a large marquee in the central courtyard hosts a series of catwalk shows by top
designers and fashion houses, while an exhibition, housed within Somerset House itself,
shows over 150 designers. However, many "off-schedule" events, such as Vauxhall Fashion
Scout and On|Off, are organised by other private-funded groups and take place at other venues
in central London.
Milan Fashion Week
Milan Fashion Week (Italian: Settimana della moda) is a clothing trade show held semiannually in Milan, Italy. The autumn/winter event is held in February/March of each year, and
the spring/summer event is held in September/October of each year.
Milan Fashion Week, established in 1958, is part of the global "Big Four fashion weeks", the
others being Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. The
schedule begins with New York, followed by London, and then Milan, and ending with Paris.
Milan Fashion Week is owned by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (The National
Chamber for Italian Fashion), a non-profit association which disciplines, co-ordinates and
promotes the development of Italian fashion[3] and is responsible for hosting the fashion
events and shows of Milan. The Camera Sindacale della Moda Italiana, was set up on 11 June
10
1958. This was the forerunner of the body which subsequently became the Camera Nazionale
della Moda Italiana.
Proprietors of the most important establishments in Italy, including some private
establishments, which, in those days, played a crucial role in the promotion of this sector,
were present at the Memorandum of Association: Roberto Capucci, Emilio Schuberth, Maria
Antonelli, Princess Caracciolo Ginnetti, Alberto Fagiani, Giovanni Cesare Guidi, Germana
Marucelli, Simonetta Colonna Di Cesar, Jole Veneziani, Francesco Borrello, Giovanni
Battista Giorgini, and the lawyer Pietro Parisio.
The events dedicated to women's fashion are the most important (Womenswear / Milan SS
Women Ready to Wear, and Milano Moda
Donna being the major fashion shows). The
summer events dedicated to men include
Menswear and Milano Moda Uomo.

1. Origins
The first New York Fashion Week (which was then called "Press Week") was the world's first
ever organized fashion week. First held in 1943, the event was designed to attract attention
away from the French fashion during World War II, when fashion industry insiders were
unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion shows. Fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert
organized an event she called "Press Week" to showcase American designers for fashion

shows, and instead had to visit designers' showrooms.) Press Week was a success, and fashion
magazines like Vogue, which were normally filled with French designs, increasingly featured
American fashion.

2. Location
14
In 1993, the Council of Fashion Designers of America consolidated New York Fashion Week
by staging it in a cluster of white tents in Bryant Park. The event was branded with the
trademark 7th on Sixth, which was in 2001 was sold to IMG.In 2010, IMG moved the tents to
the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.Admission to shows at New York Fashion Week,
whether in the tents or offsite, is typically by invitation only.
II.
3. History
2009
At the Fall 2009 Fashion Week, the
public got a taste of technology as it is shaping
the future of fashion. It is not only
making it cheaper and easier for
designers to create their collections,
it
is also saving them travel time as
many broadcast their lines over
the Internet. Many designers
opted to not only market online but
also sell exclusively online.
Designer Norma Kamali and the
Polo Ralph Lauren Rugby brand
both have an application for the
Apple iPhone. In the Vivienne
Tam show, models walked the
runway carrying Hewlett Figure 11http://www.amdlawgroup.com/wpcontent/uploads/2014/12/new-york-fashion-week-fall-winterPackard mini notebook
computers instead of the expected handbag. Mercedes-Benz officially became the sponsor of
the event, and New York Fashion Week was called "Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week" from
then.
Because of the recession affecting most of the world, designers were stepping outside of the
box for fall 2009. In previous years, fashion houses would be expecting costs up to $750,000
to produce a quality runway show. The idea of using mannequins to display clothing was used
by established designers Betsey Johnson and Vera Wang as a way to cut model and runway
costs - even the mannequins themselves can be rented instead of bought.Mara Hoffman,
Sergio Davila and Nicholas K saved 40 percent of their costs by combining their separate
lines into one show. Another trend seen during fall 2009 Fashion Week was recession friendly
fashion. A number of pieces displayed were items that could be worn in the fall and carry over
to the spring. A popular staple was bold color dressed that could be worn over a turtleneck in
colder weather and stand alone in the spring; convertible blazers were introduced by Vera
Wang and Karen Walker as a way to get double the wear out of one piece.
2010
Due to increasing pressure from Bryant Park management, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was
hosted in Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for the first time in
15
September 2010. In addition to the new location, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week partnered
with Fashion GPS, a new technology that offered quick seating and check-in for guests at the
shows.
2011
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz Fall Fashion week collection will be
showcased starting the second week of
and will be held at the Lincoln Center for
Performing Arts. The Lincoln Center for the
Performing Arts offers an additional 17,000
square feet of space, but the location change
is still receiving mixed reviews.

For the February 2014 New York Fashion Week, the Tory Burch brand was the first to use
Googles Lightbox, which is Googles custom brand exchange, to livestream video of the
runway show. Also in February 2014, Dr. Danielle Sheypuk became the first wheelchair-using
model to appear in a show for New York Fashion Week; she modeled for designer Carrie

Hammer. In September 2014, Karen Crespo became the first quadruple-amputee to walk at
New York Fashion Week, also for Carrie Hammer.

On December 12, 2014, a New York state court approved a settlement in a lawsuit by
community activists over whether allowing the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week tents in
Damrosch Park was a violation of the public trust doctrine. In accordance with the settlement,
the City of New York, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts agreed not to renew their contract with IMG. As a result, the
February 2015 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week will be the last one staged in Damrosch Park.
2015
New York Fashion Week's Lincoln Center replacement has been announced, and it's TWO
places. Women's Wear Daily reports the venues be in midtown (Skylight at Moynihan Station
at 360 West 33rd Street) and west SoHo (Skylight Clarkson Sq at 550 Washington Street) this
September, and it's a multiyear deal. IMG had discussions with designers, show producers,
and journalists to choose the locations. Considering both have been used before for shows
(Prabal Gurung at Moynihan Station, and this July's first-ever New York men's fashion week
at Skylight Clarkson Square), it'll be exciting to see more staged this Sept. 10-17.The breakup
has been rumored for some time, but now it's OFFICIAL-official: This February's New York
Fashion Week will be the last one held at Lincoln Center. According to Racked, a blogger
came across some New York City legal documents that show the parks and recreation
department has court-ordered NYFW to leave Lincoln Center once its current contract ends in
February.
17
We're not exactly sure where all the shenanigans will be based nextall signs (and former
mayor Mike Bloomberg) have pointed to Hudson Yards, but development of the area is still in
the works. Then again, many designers choose to show elsewhere in Manhattan (and
sometimes Brooklyn), so perhaps competition for popular spaces like Chelsea Piers and Milk
Studios will simply grow in the meantime. But still, it feels a bit like the end of an (albeit
short) eraLincoln Center was home to NYFW for four years after it moved from its original
home in Bryant Park.

and accessories such as bracelets and necklace, because of the time required to bring a
garment onto the market, must at times anticipate changing consumer tastes.
Fashion designers attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically
pleasing. They consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be
worn. They have a wide range and combinations of materials to work with and a wide range
of colors, patterns and styles to choose from. Though most clothing worn for everyday wear
falls within a narrow range of conventional styles, unusual garments are usually sought for
special occasions such as evening wear or party dresses.
Some clothes are made specifically for an individual, as in the case of haute couture or
bespoke tailoring. Today, most clothing is designed for the mass market, especially casual and
every-day wear. Fashion designers may work full-time for one fashion as 'in-house designers'
which owns the designs. They may work alone or as part of a team. Freelance designers work
for themselves, selling their designs to fashion houses, directly to shops, or to clothing
manufacturers. The garments bear the buyer's label. Some fashion designers set up their own
labels, under which their designs are marketed. Some fashion designers are self-employed and
design for individual clients. Other high-fashion designers cater to specialty stores or highfashion department stores. These designers create original garments, as well as those that
follow established fashion trends.
III.
1. Ready to wear
Ready-to-wear or prt--porter (pronounced: [p.ta p.te]; often abbreviated RTW; "off-therack" or "off-the-peg" in casual use) is the term for factory-made clothing, sold in finished
condition, in standardized sizes, as distinct from made to measure or bespoke clothing tailored
to a particular person's frame. Off-the-peg is sometimes used for items which are not clothing,
such as handbags.
Ready-to-wear has rather different connotations in the spheres of fashion and classic clothing.
In the fashion industry, designers produce ready-to-wear clothing intended to be worn without
significant alteration, because clothing made to standard sizes fits most people. They use
standard patterns, factory equipment, and faster construction techniques to keep costs low,
compared to a custom-sewn version of the same item. Some fashion houses and fashion
designers produce mass-produced and industrially manufactured ready-to-wear lines, while
others offer garments that, while not unique, are produced in limited numbers.
The Bread & Butter in Berlin is considered to be the world's most important trade fair for
ready-to-wear fashion.
Due to technological advances, military uniforms were the first ready-to-wear garments to be
mass-produced during the War of 1812.High-quality ready-to-wear garments for men became
generally available soon thereafter, as the relatively simple, flattering cuts and muted tones of
the contemporary fashion made proportionate sizing possible in mass production.
In the early 19th century, women's fashion was highly ornate and dependent on a precise fit
and ready-to-wear garments for women did not become widely available until the beginning
19
of the 20th century. Before, women would alter their previously styled clothing in order to
stay up to date with fashion trends. Women with larger incomes purchased new, fully tailored
clothing in current styles while middle-class and lower-class women adjusted their clothing to
fit changes in fashion by adding new neck collars, shortening skirts, or cinching shirt waists.
