Principal’s Message
Due to implications from budget cuts,
compounded with a significant drop in
student enrollment, Wekiva
Elementary will be impacted for the
2010-11 school year. We are in the
process of reducing staff allocations
and adjusting various operating
budgets for the upcoming year. I
envision a loss of staff. Additionally,
laws such as the Class Size
Amendment, IDEA, PE mandates, and
other intervention mandates will come
into play, sometimes helping us,
sometimes hindering us. I predict an
impact on student support services
including Specials and/or Intervention
offerings, an increase in staff
responsibilities (staff remaining will
have to absorb the responsibilities of
departed staff), and staff moves. We
ask all Wekiva stakeholders for their
understanding and continued support.
Supporting Wekiva
As you can see from the “Principal’s
Message”, we ask that parents and
friends support Wekiva as best they
can by doing the following:
• Support your child’s class by being
a DIVIDEND.
• Join PTA and support PTA
fundraisers.
• Support Technology.
• Shop at Target and designate
Wekiva as your “school”.
• Turn in Box Tops for Education,
Campbell Soup labels, Tyson
labels, and ink cartridges.

Dividend Ambassadors Program
Wins Parent Involvement Award
Wekiva is proud to announce that our
Dividend Ambassador Program has
been selected as one of the SCPS
district winners and will now be
submitted to the Florida Department
of Education for regional statewide
competition. Thank you to all
Ambassadors who have so generously
given of their time to support Wekiva
students!
Seminole County Public Schools
PTA News
Sales Tax Info: On April 14th, Dr.
Vogel, Superintendent of Seminole
County Public Schools, spoke to our
parents, staff, PTA, and School
Advisory Council (SAC) about his
plans for securing funds for the SCPS
capital outlay budget. We were told
that if these funds are secured, Wekiva
would be remodeled! To help ensure
Wekiva is at the top of the remodeling
list, we need parents, staff, PTA, SAC,
and the Wekiva community to attend
the SCPS School Board Meetings.
School Board meetings are held at the
Educational Support Center at 400 E.
Lake Mary Blvd., Sanford, FL 32773.
Meetings are held on Tuesday nights
at 5:30 p.m. The meetings are April
27th, May 25th, June 15th, June 29th,
July 27th, and August 10th. Please
come out and show your support for
Wekiva Elementary!
PTA Top Program Award:
Wekiva’s PTA was honored with a
Top Program Award for its Mountain
of Mail Campaign. The program
“informed” the Florida Legislature
just how important we feel public
education is and that our public
schools should be adequately funded.
Top Selling School, Entertainment
Books:
Wekiva was honored with being the
“Top Selling Entertainment Book
School” for all of Central Florida and
also given the Loyalty Award. Not
only does this honor mean we raised
needed money for our students at
Wekiva, it also means Entertainment
Books donated an additional $1,100 to
the SCPS Foundation this past year,
money that eventually made its way
back to SCPS schools in the way of
educational grants!
 Tech Night at Bruster’s
Wekiva’s final Tech Night at
Brustser’s fundraiser will be held on
Thursday, May 20th. We earned
around $450 from our percentage of
sales and donations from the first
event. Congratulations to Mrs.
Bentley’s Kindergarten class who won
the delicious ice cream cake! Almost
every student in their class was there.
Mrs. Cook would like to thank all the
families, friends, and staff who came
out to support technology at our
school. It is GREATLY appreciated!
Hope you had as much fun as we did.
Soda Floats for Technology
We want to thank all parents and
students who enjoyed a soda float and
supported technology at the Sock Hop
on April 20th. Mrs. Cook raised $405
and all proceeds will go to support
Wekiva technology. We hope you
enjoyed your “blast from the past!”
Business Partners Support Wekiva
On our last Chick-fil-A Night, we
raised a total of $191. We raised an
additional $60 on our Papa John’s
Night. Please continue to support our
efforts to raise funds, knowing that all
of this money will directly support
student services at Wekiva.
Box Top News
The final submission of Box Tops was
submitted in February raising an
additional $920 for Wekiva
Elementary. We thank the 4th grade
gifted program students who worked
tirelessly to cut and wrap
approximately 92,000 box tops.
Congratulations to Mrs. Prose’s class
for having the overall winning total of
1,563 box tops. The following classes
were the grade level winners:
K= Mrs. Prose; 1st=Mrs. Miller;
2nd=Ms. Kelly; 3rd=Mrs. Pauley/Mrs.

Spring Recycling Contest
Wekiva’s 2nd annual Recycling
Contest is being held from April 19-
May 14 in honor of Earth Day. The
class that earns the most points on
their Race to Recycle tally sheets will
earn $50 from Cartridges for Kids.
Items we recycle include: empty
inkjet, laser, fax and copier cartridges,
laptops, iPods, cell phones, PDAs,
scientific calculators, video game
consoles & games, digital cameras,
movie DVDs, and GPS devices.
Please send those items to your child’s
class so they can add them to their
class tally sheets. Help us REDUCE,
REUSE & RECYCLE! Any questions,

Staff Appreciation Week!
If anyone is interested in donating a
door prize for our staff members for
Staff Appreciation Week (May 3-7),

Pre-K Celebrates Moms
Pre-K will be hosting its annual
breakfast and “Circle Time” show on
May 7th to honor their mothers.
Koala MusicKidz News
The Koala MusicKidz will be
presenting their production of The
Jungle Book at the final PTA meeting
of the year on May 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Please make sure to attend this great
production and support the arts at
Wekiva. We are so blessed to have so
many families and children with so
much talent. These 3rd, 4th, and 5th
graders have worked hard to prepare
for this opportunity. We will be
having a bake sale the evening of the
performance, as well as a donation
box to offset expenses. Thanks for
allowing us the privilege of working
with these great students!
Seminole County Public Schools
Join Koala MusicKids in 2010-11
Koala MusicKidz is a great way to
involve your student in the world of
music before they reach middle and
high school. The students learn many
valuable lessons - from good singing
technique to teamwork to
responsibility. Boys are encouraged to
join, as well. Boys are a valuable
presence in the music program,
preparing them for the band and
chorus experiences that will be offered
in middle and high school.
3rd Grade Reward Day
Thanks to 3rd grade students who were
asked to bring in pennies for "Penny
Olympics". During the Olympics, 3rd
grade engaged in activities that
involved pennies. The third graders
raised $176 by bringing in their own
pennies to use to play the games. This
money is being donated to Bags of
Hope.
2nd Grade End of Year Udate
Please note that there has been a
change to the 2nd grade end of year
party, which is now scheduled for
Friday, June 4th.

in order for us to provide you with the

Kindergarten Parent Night
On Thursday, August 12, 2010,
Wekiva will hold its annual
Kindergarten Parent Night from 6:00-
7:15 p.m. This is a wonderful time for
parents to meet their child’s teacher
and become familiar with the Wekiva
kindergarten program. This event is
limited to parents only.
Extended Day Registration: 2010-11
Registration for Extended Day will be
held Friday, June 4th, beginning at
7:00 a.m. in the cafeteria.
