The rite of kissing the purple"2was performed in
the following manner: the individual admitted to the
presence of the emperor fell before him in the usual
attitude of obeisance,13took the hem or corner of
the emperor's purple robe in hand,'4 and raising it
to his lips kissed it.15 On the basis of a passage in

opinion that the emperorheld out his robe to the adorator
who then took it in his hand. They cite as evidencefor this
particular AMMIANUS XV 5 18: ...offertur purpura multo
quamanteaplacidius...; and XXI 9 8: "Maiestatisinsigne...
tibi... porrexi." It is true that in these instancesthe emperor
does "offer"the purple for adoratioby extendingit towards
the adorator. However,in both cases the adoratoris or has
been out of favor with his sovereignand cannot be certain
of how he will be received; see above p. 66f. Thereforethe
purple is held out as a gestureof reassurance. There is no
evidence to show that this was a regularpractice.

privilege of kissing the purple.
In discussing the origin of the adoratiopurpurae,
Alfoldi writes: "Dies ist, wie wir festhalten miissen,
eine alte persische Gewohnheit,"68and on the basis
of a passage in Plutarch, he has assumed that Persian
subjects venerated the chiton of Alexander in this
manner. The passage, however, does not contain
evidence for such an assumption. Plutarch, in
recording the quarrel between Alexander and Clitus,
states that at a banquet given by Alexander verses
were sung in ridicule of the Macedonian generals
who had recently suffered defeat. Clitus, who was
drunk, openly resented the debasement of the
Macedonians, and a dispute arose between the two
friends. Clitus went so far as to throw it up to Alexander that Macedonians had been beaten with rods
and had found it necessaryto beg for the intercession
of the Persians in order to obtain an audience with
their sovereign. According to Plutarch, Clitus'
boldness was so vehement that those aroundAlexander
leaped up to face him and heaped abuse upon his

that it was not an act of obeisance in which the robe
of the person venerated was kissed. In fact, he
cites the Persian form of proskynesis as direct antithesis of the type which was performedat the feet of

which these latter took delight was not that in which
the adoratorremainedat a distance (QQG9@caev),"as,"
writes Lucian, "is the custom of the Persians" (w'g
HiQaOtl vo'og), but one had to go up to the man, bow
onets head, and kiss his breast or hand.
Alf6ldi's statement that the kissing of the purple
derived from an old Persian custom cannot, then, be
accepted. The sources which he cites as documentation contain no evidence to support his theory. On
the contrary, the passage following the portion of
Lucian's Nigrinuswhich he quotes would indicate that
the wealthy Romans (not Orientals as Alfbldi be"Ausg." 62-63.

his robe (eum [scil. Nebridium]..imperator paludamentoprotexit)23 and thus saved his life.124
Finally, Ammianus records that in preparing for
the Battle of Adrianople the Romans were careful to
leave the principalisfortunae insignia within the city
walls where they would be safe from the Barbarians
in case of a Roman defeat.125 And, to be sure, the
day following the disastrous battle the Barbarians
marched on the city with grim determinationto take
it, docti, as Ammianus describes them, per proditores
et transfugas, potestatum culmina maximarum, et
fortunaeprincipalisinsignia,thesaurosque
Valentis,illuc
ut arduo in munimentoconditos.126
Ammianus thus illustrates in its several aspects
the extreme veneration which was felt for the purple
during the fourth century. The robe had clearly
become a fetish and was looked upon as a sacred
object which alone conferredupon its wearer supreme
sovereignty over the Roman world. The attribution
of sanctity to the badge of emperorshipwas certainly
an important factor in the development of the
ceremony of kissing the purple. Alf6ldi correctly
explains the nature of the ceremony when he writes:
"Am wichtigsten scheint mir bei der Anbetung des
Purpurs der Umstand zu sein, da3 hier an Stelle der
gottlichen Ehrung der Person (wie bei Caesar,
Caligula, Domitianus) die Ehrung des Symbols der
kaiserlichen Macht in den Vordergrund tritt. Der
abstrakteBegriffhat also auch hier seinen momentanen
Trager iiberschattet."127 Yet another theory has
been advanced and must be considered if only for
the purpose of contradicting it.
Babut128holds that the purple was substituted
for the person of the emperoras the object of adoratio
in order to avoid conflicts with the Christians,whose
creed prescribed the worship of a single deity. His
argument is based solely on the phraseology of the
Law Codes, He points out that under Constantius
and Valentinian the jurists wrote purpuramadorare
in place of imperatoremadorare or some similar
expression.129 But this was natural,since the statutes
in question concernthe ceremonyof adoratiopurpurae.
He goes on to show that during the early years of the
reign of Theodosius the expression became purpuram
venerari, contingere or adtingere,'30 supposedly a
