A REACTION ON THE TOP OF THE CLASS

Quality education has been the most utterly word in any educational undertaking around
the world. It has been the subject of researches which intend to search for the solution on how
each country would achieve education that is appropriate relevance and responsive to the
changing needs of the society, by which people would be benefited. Its attainment within the
Philippine setting is of far distance considering the resources the Philippines allotted for public
education. If the subject of reference is the Finland education system, then, we are not getting
even in the first step or initial move for such dream. No matter how desirous we are in attaining
quality of education, without going into the practice by which Finland manifested, and now
being reproduced by other country, then such dreams will become a nightmare.
I couldnt imagine putting myself in the situation to which I am called to react on the
article which pertains to the education in Finland. Having myself indulged in the public
education sector, it made me difficult not even to relate to that idea. However, as it ably been put
into theory, that what is applicable to other country would be applicable in our own country,
considering that we are sharing the same vision for the creation of world worthy to live in, it

made me realized that it is not too late for us to adopt if not to emulate in our own education
practices. Being considered as the best practices by other advanced country it now finding way in
our own educational practice..
Finland education now divert from curriculum centered to that of a student centered, a
curriculum that suggest an ideal one. Without putting the student at the center of educative
process there can be no quality education at all. Education must empower each individual; to
empower them is to educate them. This practice adopts the usual connotation that quality
education depends on the quality of teachers and the quality of teachers depend on the quality of
instruction they received in their baccalaureate degree. Thats why in Finland, teachers are
subjected to a stringent screening before they can be hired in their school. They regarded them as
a group of individual equated to other high paying and esteem professional like doctors and
lawyer.
Since educations primordial purpose is to attain progress and development, then we must
invest more to education. Because any development that we ought to achieve requires knowledge
and that knowledge can only be acquired through education. For there can be no real progress
without putting human face at the center of any development undertaking.

Concomitant to this article of Top of the Class, I now realized how effective teachers and
effective schools can be developed in our own setting. For me, effective teachers are those
teachers that inspire rather than indoctrinates. It is of no moment to say that teachers must be
knowledgeable in the subject matter they are ought to teach. Teachers must be imbibed with
desirable values so that student can emulate from them. It is more important than any other thing
that teachers should possessed. A good teacher with good desirable values of teaching considers
every learner not a mere tool or instrument that needs to be manipulated. But a human being that
needs to be inspired and motivated in order to pursue their own dreams.
An effective school is one that provides necessary learning opportunity for the learner to
develop their own potential in their own way. A school that caters to the learning needs of the
leaner. A training ground of future productive citizen.
