INTA302 P01 - Residential Design II
Instructor Michelle Kirckpatrick
Part I - Residential Transitional Housing Interviews
Transitional housing is supportive housing that helps fight the homeless problem in todays society.
(TransitionalHousing.org) The women and/or families that populate these homes have had some event
impact their lives that require them to seek shelter and other forms of outside help. These life-
impacting events range from homelessness, substance abuse/addiction, abuse in the home or other
poor living environments. Transitional housing facilities were created to help women take themselves
and their children out of these situations so that they are able to take the first step to improve their
quality of living. After completing interviews with representatives of two facilities of this type, we have
gained a wealth of information that will allow us to objectively create a space for women and families
such as these that will contain the essentials that they need to function comfortably while they inhabit
these spaces.
The first organization we interviewed was Alpha-Omega Miracle home, it is a Christian faith based
transitional home located in St. Augustine, Florida. This organization offers residential transitional
housing for homeless, soon to be homeless single mothers
and pregnant women ages 18-28 for up two years while
they work to transition to independent and permanent
homes. They also offer permanent supportive housing for
homeless senior women over 60. However, if the senior
women can no longer take care of themselves they are
then transferred to senior citizen homes that are equipped
to care for them. Dorothy Parker, the receptionist and
intake coordinator at the facility was very helpful in

annually.

providing details on what her role is at the facility as well as providing information on what the facilities
goals are and the programs that they offer. Dorothy interviews, screens and provides training and
orientation for those that are volunteering at the facility. She also coordinates background checks and
leads presentations at churches and community events. During the interview, Dorothy explained that
the goal of this organization was to enable women to be self-sufficient by the time that they get ready to
leave this facility. They strive to provide women with a good education that will help them land
employment that will allow them to take care of themselves and their children. They work towards
achieving this goal with each individual by helping women obtain their GEDs and by offering several
classes such as financial literacy and life skill classes and programs that provide women with emotional

and social support through counseling and an assistance program that allows them to achieve financial
stability through employment.
Alpha-Omega Miracle Home provides women and their children with two-bedroom apartments that are
fully furnished and that contain all major appliances including dishwashers, stoves and washers and
dryers. For meetings and other events the women typically gather in the living room of one of the ladies
apartments or being a faith based organization modeled on Christian values, they also gather at church
for services and bible studies. The needs of the women and children who are housed by this facility
differ, typically they arrive with nothing, so the organization provides
everything from clothing, shoes, food and baby items to childcare and
transportation. With plans in mind for their new facility, Dorothy
recommended that for facilities that are to house children, providing
a special playroom/area for the children to play and interact with
each other and an on-site daycare would be helpful so that it provides
Figure 2: Alpha-Omega's thrift store has
everything from sporting equipment,
furniture, appliances, electronics, clothes
and toys to media. All funding goes
towards the support of women, children
and seniors that they taken in and the
many programs they offer.

a place for the children to stay while the women attend work or
classes.

The second organization we interviewed is Calvary Womens
Services located in Washington, DC. This organization offers

three housing programs for women whose goal is to help them mentally, physically and emotionally by
offering programs, classes and assistance to help them reach their desired paths in life. The programs
vary by the amount of support each group of women requires. The first program, the Calvary
Transitional Housing program helps homeless women by providing homes for them and also helping
them to recover from substance and physical abuse/healing from trauma that they may have
experienced, as well as helping them to secure income from employment and benefits. The Pathways
program is another program within this organization that offers stability and support to women who
have been chronically homeless. These women are provided a comfortable space where they can build
their individual skills and create communities with others. The Sister Circle program is the last program
that they offer, it is a permanent housing program for women who live independently and continue to

April Bryant & Edwardina Jones

INTA302 P01 - Residential Design II
Instructor Michelle Kirckpatrick
receive long-term support while in recovery from substance addiction. Sister Circle prides itself on being
a close-knit community of peer support.
Michelle Woodall works as a receptionist for this organization; she provided a lot of information about
the programs offered as well as details on the basic housing set up for the members of each program.
She explained that Calvary Womens Services serves single women only, by providing them with housing
and employment for up to 24 months or indefinitely depending on
which program they belong to. The programs/services that they
offer include Case Management, Finance & Money management,
Life skills, Math, Arts & Crafts, Spanish and Dance classes. They also
offer classes to help women to get their GEDs and have created a
program called the Step-Up program, which are a series of job
Figure 3: Art classes are one of the
many classes offered at Calvary
Womens Services.

readiness courses.
The building in which this organization is located is two stories with

a basement. There are no private rooms in this facility; women are paired up two to four to a room with
enough furniture to allow them each an adequate amount of storage. On each floor of the two-story
building there are community bathrooms, a lounge area and a kitchenette for each woman to share. On
the first floor there is a kitchen and a large dining room to offer meals that are prepared by the
organizations staff. For classes and discussions women typically gather in a recreation room or a large
classroom located on the basement level. Per Michelle, two design aspects that should be considered
are making sure that all living areas are ADA accessible and that appropriate safety features are kept in
mind when housing children so that everyone can live comfortably within their spaces.
At the completion of these interviews we have learned that the needs of these organizations can vary
dependent on the programs that are offered and the people that they are meant to serve. It is also
considerably important to contemplate the needs of the individuals as well to ensure that a safe,
functional and comfortable living environment is created.

Color Palette #1
Muted blues were very popular in
Federal Style. Blue evokes a feeling
of calmness and serenity as well as
a sense of security and trust. The
pale blue gives a more relaxing,
friendly and inviting feel. The
brown brings in nature and add a
reliable and sturdy feel.

Figure 1

Color Palette # 2
Federal Style also included
Pumpkins, cream, tan and yellow.
The colors in this scheme are
consider to be warm with and the
blue adds a bit of contrast. Warm
colors often evoke happiness,
optimism and energy.
Figure 2

Color Palette #3
Turquoise, Grayed greens, Ivory
and other creamy hues with
silver or gold as accents were
popular colors in America when
the Federal Design style was at
it's apex. This combination of
colors together promotes a
sense of calm because of their
similar tones and lack of
saturation

INTA302: Residential Design Planning II
W6A1: Final Compilation, Justification & Reflection
Instructor M. Kirkpatrick

Part I: Justifying the Solution

During this course, along with a partner I was asked to plan the design of a residential facility in our case, in the
Federal Style that is to act as a safe haven for women & children who have gone through some event or events in
their lives that have impacted them so much that they are required to seek shelter from an outside source.
When conceptualizing the design of this space, a Transitional Home for Women & Children, there were quite a
few fundamental elements that needed to be considered; Safety, functionality, comfort & aesthetics were all at
the top of that list of fundamentals. From what I have been required to design, I feel that I have been able to
capture those essentials while creating an environment that is true to the Federal style.
I feel that I was able to adequately work towards capturing the elements of light, texture, pattern and color in
this design, so much so that I believe they are dominant aspects. Natural and artificial lighting along with color
is manipulated in this space to help support the intended concept of a calm and relaxing interior. A blend of
light and dark muted colors, reminiscent of those used during the Federal design period, were selected in an
analogous color scheme to assist in creating this environment that was intended to be light, soothing and airy.
Large windows and doors along with interior transom windows were placed so to help spread light to the rooms
within the center of this space. Artificial lighting is to be placed to ensure that no room or hallway feels dark or
dreary. Various textures and patterns are present through the use of upholstery, flooring and on wall
applications. Stripes, damask and classical design motifs are used in many areas of this space to help support
the Federal style. Repeating these patterns and colors I believe will help to visually connect each of the spaces
and to help the design reach the point of successfully obtaining the very important principle of Harmony.
As mentioned above, having the inhabitants feel comfortable within these spaces was very important. After
researching existing facilities such as this, it was made apparent that many of these families are different and
come from a variety of backgrounds. With this in mind I wanted to ensure that the apartment units mainly,
since most time would be spent in this spaces, be adaptable to the residents by providing adequate storage and
basic furniture that would comply with their needs. The furniture selected is meant to be functional and many
of the items have finishes and designs that go along with the overall design style of the facility. After the
selection of many of the finishes, lighting and materials as well as the consideration of the costs of permitting,
design fees, trade fees etc. I feel that it is possible to fit within the budget that was established by the client, as
there still was a large amount available after a majority of the selections were made.
Universal design applications, code and egress requirements and environmental design choices influenced the
decisions that were made throughout this process mainly in furniture layout, fixture placement, space planning
and material selections. The space planning and furniture placement was reconsidered on multiple occasions to
allow for adequate egress through the space. Natural products and finishes without the presence of harsh
chemicals were selected to ensure a healthy indoor air quality.

Part II: Reflecting

A few concepts that I feel that I have learned in this course that I think will help me moving forward in my
Interior Design career and education were the importance of code and egress requirements, research and the
incorporation of historic styles into future designs. The reiteration of code and egress requirements was a very
welcome design consideration in this course, it was a welcome refresher and it truly helped to have to consider
the needs of all when designing this space. Research was also very important in this course, especially when it
came to having to compile information on the Federal design style, I feel that I have gained quite a few
resources that will help in the future when information is needed for historic design elements as well as for
contemporary design.
This was a great experience working in a team atmosphere; I dont believe I have ever had to work with
someone who not only is located in a different time zone but in a different country. My partner and I were able
to work together efficiently while having to consider time constraints and having to divide a workload meant for
a team of 3. I believe this was a successful partnership and a rewarding experience that I have definitely learned
from and will be able to use in my future career and educational experiences because I believe we were both
able to build on our time-management, leadership and communication skills which are all important aspects
when working in a team environment.
