Change: Here and Yet to Come

We are legally and certainly something newLiving Faith Lutheran Church. We have been working on the
details to complete the process. Jill Steiner, in particular, has been working to make sure all our is are dotted and our ts are crossed. We have a new Employee Identification Number (kind of a social security
number) for an institution. We have a new congregation number with the ELCA and are recognized as a
new congregation with the ELCA. We are working through changing everything with our bank. A sign
committee is in place and working on a new sign. Things are changing; but it does take time and we appreciate your patience.

Congregational Meeting - Sunday, April 17

There will be a congregational meeting on Sunday,
April 17th at 11:30am in the sanctuary at Living
Faith East. Worship that Sunday at Wright and
Quincy will be at 10:00am, to shorten the time between the East worship and the meeting.

Its Time to Celebrate!

Easter is the biggest day of celebration in the church every year. The day when we
celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and end our Lenten journey. But the next Sunday,
April 3rd, 2016, is going to be another wonderful celebration. There will be no vespers, because we want the entire congregation to gather out at Living Faith West at
the Sturtevant Sportsplex to celebrate God making us one and new! To help celebrate, that day, we will have Assistant to the Bishop, the Rev. Sandra Chrostowski as
our guest preacher that day. Please plan to be there as the whole of Living Faith comes together.

Easter is early this year, and in many places across this church trees will still be
bare and fields barren. It might even
snow. But on Easter morning we will gather to greet the risen Son and give thanks
to God for the new life we have in Jesus
Christ.
Two things come to mind this Easter when
there is still only the hint of spring: Jesus
words to his disciples just before his crucifixion and a hymn.

spring was planted.

St. Paul wrote, Do you not know that all
of us who have been baptized into Christ
Jesus were baptized into his death? We
have already fallen into the earth and
died. For if we have been united with
him in a death like his, we will certainly be
united with him in a resurrection like his.
We will not remain alone. We will bear
fruit.

Jesus said, The hour has come for the Son of Man to
be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of
wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a
single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Jesus
was talking about his death, but he was also assuring
his disciples and us that death is not the end, that,
though it might seem impossible and even terrifying
to step into the void, God brings life out of death.

The seed has been planted in all the barren places in the world and in our lives. That gives us
the power and the hope especially in the face of
our brokenness to see life where the world only
sees death ... in refugee camps and hospice units, in
parched earth and in floods, in oppression and denied justice we are bold to confess. Now the green
blade rises. Now love lives again. Now love comes
again like wheat arising green.

The hymn is ELW 379.

Christ is risen.

Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,

wheat that in dark earth many days has lain;
love lives again, that with the dead has been;
love is come again like wheat arising green.

The tune is actually a French Christmas carol. How

perfect that, in the bleak midwinter, the promise of

Lutheran Social Services

Lutheran Social Services of the Carolinas, based in Salisbury, N.C. was singled out in an anti-refugee/antiMuslim leaflet distributed this past January by the Ku Klux Klan. The organization was singled out because it provides services to refugees. In a statement, W. Goins, Jr., the president of the organization said,
Lutheran Social Services of the Carolinas (LSC) rejects hate, whether its directed at religion, race or culture. LSC will continue to walk with all the people we serve, and we call on the people of the Carolinas to
rise up and speak out against discrimination and separation.

ed by Our Saviors and approved at the annual
meeting, to spend $10,000 on sign for a base.
We might need more funds if we want to get a
digital sign. People who volunteered for the sign
committee were Sue Oertel and Ginny White.
Recommended persons to contact; Perry

The Endowment Fund needs to reorganize. According to their by-laws, once Atonement ceases
to exist, the Endowment ceases to exist. Therefore a Living Faith Endowment needs to be
formed. Money from endowment board is now

need to recreate the Living Faith endowment

council as board members and reserve the funds
that were in the fund. Seconded - Discussion on

APRIL 2016 Volume #1, Issue #1

Timing for new call committee it was presented that Pastor Warren and Pastor Denise need
new calls. Their current calls ceased with the
dissolution of Atonement and Our Saviors.
They need to be called to Living Faith. The question was put forth about the type of pastoral
structure we would desire. It was then recognized that a vision/mission exploration process
should be done before this is determined. It was
decided that the Consolidation team would work
on setting up a process for visioning and subsequent call in consultation with the synod.
Council members chose a term out of a hat in order to stagger the terms of council so that not
everyone is new every year. 2 year terms and 1
year term and each can serve for 2 terms: Margaret 1 year; Vicki 2 year; Bob 1 year; Tom 2
year; Ginny 1 year; Sue 2 year; Teresa 2 year.
The Mission statement that the Consolidation
team worked on was presented to council: Finding Faith Building Faith Living Faith. It was
moved seconded and passed to begin working
with this mission statement. Pastor Denise will
give Perry this info for work on a logo.
Segue work on homeless shelter continues. The
mayor plans for the city to receive a building.
Seque is applying for 501(c)3 status with the
IRS. Until that happens a 501c3 is needed to accept donations. A request was made to use Living Faiths. A Motion was made for Living Faith
to serve as fiscal agent for Segue until they get
their 501c3. We will accept funds given to Segue and the Segue board will disperse these
funds. Seconded, discussion: Living Faith will
take in donations and write a check to Segue for
these funds. Segue will take care of thank yous
and acknowledgements of donations, not Living
Faith staff. We will have Segue do a newsletter
article on what is happening.
Easter breakfast form to help sign up if you
can.
It was suggested that someone look into having
a newspaper article regarding the consolidation.
Warren will look into this.

Cathi (Helding) Webster

Cathi is the daughter of Curt & Barb
Helding; Curtis is a lifelong member of
Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Barb
joined when she married Curt. Cathi was
born and raised in Racine and was a lifelong member of Our Saviors until 2012
when she joined Bethania Lutheran
Church. Cathi has two sisters , Crystal
and Cheryl, and a brother, Frank, who
also grew up at Our Saviors. Crystal and
her husband Mark are still members. Cathi has a
husband, Keith, five children and three grandchildren.
Although quiet and shy, Cathis love and passion
has always been her church. While growing up her
mom, Barb, was the church secretary at Our Saviors
and she helped out in the office off and on over the
years. Cathi has taught Sunday school, has been the
Sunday school superintendent, youth leader, youth
choir leader, Neighborhood Camp site coordinator,
assistant site coordinator, Spark leader, substitute
secretary, decorating team, call committee and
choir member.

In 2011, when offered the Interim Administrative Assistants job, Cathi gladly
stepped in even though she knew the job
may end at anytime since at that time the
future of Our Saviors was uncertain. The
staff at Our Saviors was all interim: Pastor Ron was the interim Pastor and Mark
was the interim Maintenance man. As
talks progressed and things moved on
with a consolidation with Atonement, the
office and Cathi were moved to Atonement into the former Sunday School Coordinator
office and Pastor Ron moved on. When the building
sold in December 2015, Mark was hired by the new
owners to help with the building care.
Cathi has been in the Atonement Our Saviors office
since March 2013 and has been doing the Our Saviors office work as well as all the bulletins, Chimes
weekly, some of the social media and website stuff.
With the consolidation of Atonement Our Saviors,
Cathi remains on staff as an administrative assistant
and is still working on the bulletins, chimes weekly,
social media and website.
Cathi looks forward to serving the members of Living Faith Lutheran Church for many years.

Thrivent Action Teams: Apply for an Action Grant Project for 2016!!
Since the dissolution of the chapter system for
Thrivent, monies are now being seeded out for projects and fundraisers through individual Thrivent
members. This could be helpful for many groups
and projects around Living Faith and in the community. For example, I received seed money for the
youth gathering fundraiser. Along with promotional materials I will receive $250.00 as seed money
for the fundraiser. I was able to fund a service project at Lutherdale Bible Camp funding life jackets.
Exaudh used one of his grants to purchase food for
the food pantry and the other to help fund the Halloween party.
You could use the seed money to do many things:
purchase materials for the Quilters or the Stitchers
of Blessings, or you could lead a service project to

purchase and sort food for the FaithWorks Food

Pantry or purchase light bulbs for the sanctuary.
Think of a fundraiser or small project you might like
to do yourself or with a couple other people. Or
maybe you are part of something coming up that is
already in place, such as the Cookie Walk. We already have one action grant for the confirmation
class to serve the Community Meal. What can your
grants do in 2016? Each Thrivent member can apply for 2 projects a year. This is an offer that is not
to be missed. The process is simple and can be done
online. If you are tech savvy, just log on to your account with Thrivent and click on my Thrivent and
then action teams and it will tell you what to do. If
you need help I am willing to help you through the
process. Thank you, Pastor Denise

The Foundations Ministry

Our Saviors Lutheran Church Foundation grew out of a need to develop a solid financial base giving stability to our congregations ministry in the years to come. An endowment fund was established to meet this
need in 1972.

What is the Foundation?

The Foundation was initiated through a gift from Mr. Harry Johnson. Since then, numerous other individuals have made generous donations in support of the ministries of Our Saviors Lutheran Church Foundation. The Foundation is not organized for profit and there is no capital stock. It is incorporated under the
provisions of the laws of the State of Wisconsin and no elected officers or members of the Board of Directors receive compensation for their services.
On May 28, 2013, the Foundation entered into an agreement with the Racine Community Foundation to
establish a donor advised fund that shall be called Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Racine Foundation
Fund. The Racine Community Foundation will administrate the Funds assets through investments and disburse grants in accordance to the sitting board members written requests. In accordance with this agreement, the sitting board members at the time will be known as the Advisory Board. Because of this
change, the advisory board members will retain permanent seats until a resignation is tendered or upon
termination by death. The advisory board will continue to administer the Fund until no board members
survive. At that time, the Foundations Fund would be added to the General Fund of the Racine Community Foundation.

Purpose of the Foundation

The purpose of this endowment fund is to provide finances above the churchs normal needs. If we are to
be of service to our church and community, we must broaden our ministry and support worthwhile projects and programs. The Foundation has given numerous grants to missionaries through the World Mission Prayer League, local non-profit organizations, education scholarships to church members and various
projects that were documented for the well-being of the church. Such grants would continue. The forms to
request grants are available in Our Saviors church office.

Donating to the Foundation

A memorial gift is an enduring method to perpetuate the memory of one you hold dear. Gifts and bequests
to the Foundation can be made at any time by friends as well as members of Our Saviors and Atonement
church. Donations should be sent directly to:
Racine Community Foundation
1135 Warwick Way
Racine, WI 53406
In the memo of the check, please note: OSLC Foundation Fund. Also indicate if a memorial and the name
memorialized. Contributions are tax deductible.

Building Missional Capacity for Sustainability

Our team (Tom Korabik, Peggy Abbott, Liz Kegel, Bob Reinders, Mareeka Abbott, Warren Williams and
Denise Mbise) attended the initial retreat at St. Peters in Sheboygan on March 5 and 6. We worked on
leadership development, discipleship, stewardship and missional initiatives and how these might be integrated into the life of our congregation. We were there with three other churches from our synod (Village
in Milwaukee, St. Marks in Waukesha and St. Peters in Sheboygan) and are working with staff from the
ELCA office in Chicago on this new initiative. Before our next retreat in September we will be looking at
these areas of development and how we can begin active work on them at Living Faith.

46th Anniversary Party & Lunch
Chicken Foot Dominoes

Bingo!

A bingo party is planned for Monday, April 11, 2016 at the Villa at
Lincoln Park. We will need volunteers to visit with and help the residents play bingo, bingo prizes and
desserts for that date. Look for more information
in the weekly bulletin.
Its Time to Start Gathering Items for Lutheran
World Relief Personal Care Kits
A Personal Care Kit contains the following items:
1 metal nail clipper*
1 bath towel (about 27 x 52, new or gently used)*
2 bath size bars of soap (in original wrapping)
1 sturdy comb
1 adult size toothbrush (in original packaging)
*These are the items we need the most
The very simple gesture of giving a Personal Care Kit
can give someone the encouragement to start anew,
starting with a bath. You can share Gods grace and
love by providing that simple comfort.
You can bring any of the needed items on Sunday and
leave them in the marked box in the narthex. OR, you
can also sponsor a Personal Care Kit for $9, and we will
purchase the needed items.
Thank you for your support of people in crisis around
the world!!

2016 Neighborhood Camp

Weve just begun planning for 2015 Neighborhood Camp. Registration forms for campers and SALT are
expected to be available mid to late April.
Help Keep Camp Free

Camp Intern Applications Available

Racine ELCA Neighborhood Camp fills an important need in our neighborhood during the summer. Camp is a collaborative, creative community outreach ministry to the
children of Racine. It was started 16 years ago to
provide the underserved children in our neighborhoods a safe, fun and stimulating place to learn and
play. There are plenty of summer camps in the Racine area, but Neighborhood Camp is unique as it
is provided at no cost to the campers.

Applications are now being accepted for Neighborhood Camp interns. Forms are available in the
church office or online at www.neighborhoodcamp
racine. org/staff-resources/

Funding for Neighborhood Camp comes from various grants and from generous support of congregation members like you. It is easy to make a financial contribution to camp. Visit the camp website
at www.neighborhoodcampracine.org and click on
the Donor Information tab. You can make donations quickly and safely online, or you can print out
a form and mail your donation in.

Dates for 2016 Neighborhood Camp are June 20 July 28. (Camp will not be held the week of July 4.)
Mandatory training is set for Wednesday through
Friday, June 15-17.
Applications are due to Carol Yust at 1925 Summit
Avenue, Racine,
53404 or by
email by May 1.
Hiring is expected to be
completed by
May 31.
Come join the
fun!

Keep Saving - A.I.M. Now needs your UPCs!

Thank you to everyone who has been saving UPCs and beverage/sauce
caps from participating Labels for Education partners for A.I.M. Now Child
Care Center. Campbells has announced that, after 43 years, they are winding down the Labels for Education program. Since we are a registered school with the program, we
have about another year and a half to participate. But, the number of participating products will slowly
dwindle. So, please, please , PLEASE continue to send in your UPCs & caps so we can get as much benefit from this program as we can in the time left.
Turn in what youve collected by reusing an envelope or baggie, marking it Child Care, and putting it in
the offering plate. If you happen to be going to the church office, you can also turn them in there.

Focus: Oral & Personal Care Brigade

Each and every year, the products we use every day to make our bodies clean, our teeth bright and shiny, and keep us smelling fresh, end
up being thrown away after use and ultimately end up in landfills. Toms of Maine (a pioneer in environmental stewardship since 1970) and Colgate have partnered with eco-innovator TerraCycle to provide a second life for empty and used toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, floss containers, mouthwash bottles, soap packaging, and antiperspirant and deodorant containers. Together we can convert
these would-be waste materials into fun and unique products!
Oral & Personal Care Brigade accepted waste: ANY brand of toothpaste tubes, toothpaste caps, floss
containers, mouthwash bottles, mouthwash caps, deodorant containers and caps, soap packaging, and
toothbrush and toothpaste tube outer packaging. Please note: This brigade does not accept aerosol deodorant cans.

Build Your Budget with SCRIP

every scrip card purchased supports Living Faith.

If your budget is anything like mine, I would love to

give more to our church, but there just isnt any
more to give. So, why not let the retailers where you
shop help with that? They set aside a certain percentage of their profits for charitable giving, and
they often prefer to give that money to causes supported by their customers.

Need your Scrip right away? We keep the cards

listed in the left hand column on the front page of
the order form in stock in limited quantities, so call
Karin Langlois at 672-0635, she can probably arrange to get it to you quickly. Need a small gift? We
stock a number of cards in denominations of $10
(there are even a few $5 cards available.) Any order
placed by 9:00am Tuesday can be picked up as early
as Thursday evening, by arrangement with Karin
Langlois.

It's easy to start using scrip for purchases you know

you have to make every week, like gas and groceries, and with a little planning, you can use scrip for
just about everything. If you're working on projects
around the house you can find scrip for your renovations in the home improvement category, or check
out the clothing brands to add to your wardrobe.
For fun nights out with family and friends, stock up
on scrip from the entertainment and dining retailers. You can find scrip for just about anything, and
12 | The Journey

To get your Scrip see Dick Langlois at the Scrip table

before the 9:15 service or at coffee hour. You can
also pick up an order form in the narthex and call
Karin or email her at cinders216@yahoo.com to order your Scrip. If you attend Living Faith West, you
can also arrange with June Klingbeil to get your
Scrip there.

Americas Original Sin

has merely changed, not gone away.

Author Jim Wallis makes a compelling argument in

his new book Americas Original Sin, that racism is
the first and worst sin of America, it hampers us as
a nation and a people and keeps us from our best
destiny. He also argues that it is the task of the
church of Jesus to fight racism in whatever way we
are able.

Wallis, in his new book (recommended by The Lutheran) suggests that the task of the church in this
generation is to become both multi-cultural and
multi-racial. Maintaining a segregated worshipping body is a tremendous sin and it fails to reflect
the reality of the church.

Wallis states that in our current age, most people

fail to see racism. People know that the battle was
one in the 1960s for civil rights, and most Christians truly despise overt actions of hate and discrimination. But we fail, often, to see that there is
a huge gap in wealth, jobs, and incarceration rates.
All of those factors are clear evidence that racism
APRIL 2016 Volume #1, Issue #1

One doable bit of advice that Wallis makes is for

folks who consider themselves to be white, to give
up the designation. When forms are filled out
which ask the question, simply check other. White,
like black or Asian or Latino are not real categories, at least not real racial categories. There is only one race, human and we are all equally loved by
the one who made us in Gods image.
