Item stats
A quick summary of some non-obvious things:

The final level upgrade of an item is extra strong if there is item synergy, so try to avoid level 14/15. It is unimportant when there is no synergy.

Character synergy grants a stat bonus similar to gaining one of power on both weapon and armor.

Different item types have small power differences (e.g. daggers and fist weapons are weaker than swords or axes by a half or more).

The final level-up is worth extra stats for synergy items (except 1 items):

Item levels
Each level adds roughly 1.5 to the items primary stats (e.g. DEF for helms).
The value of a level upgrade seems to be similar for items of every rarity.
What rarity does
Rarity improves an item in two ways.
Max level: the items max level increases by +5 (+2 for 2-star items).
Thats around 810 stat points. Rarity from combining does grant this bonus.
Level 1 stats: a higher rarity item beats a lower rarity item of the same level,
because rarity gives items a head start in their level 1 stats.
Combining does not grant the level 1 bonus, so combined items are weaker:

Characters gain +10 levels (and +50% experience gain).
Thats worth 1520 points in their primary stats (ATK & DEF for fighters).
Thats roughly the same as a one boost in weapon and armor power.

This chart shows how rarity, combining, synergy, and item type affect weapon stats. The width of each bar is the range of ATK values for currently available items.
Weapons with MAG are omitted, since they have a much lower ATK. They would make the chart less readable and make comparisons more difficult.

DEF and RES stats for armor


Here are similar charts for DEF and RES. Note that Light Armor is second-best for both stats.

Some items are omitted to keep the charts legible: Ice Helm (III) and Leather Cap (VI) have unusually low DEF, and Aegis Shield (IV) has unusually high RES.

The tier rule a fast way to rank items


The games item optimizer is sometimes not usable, either due to bad results or because a good item is equipped on another character. The optimizer also messes
with record materia, which I never want it to do.
Sadly, if we want to choose items manually, the game makes it hard to answer basic questions like: how should we rank the following items for use in a (IV) dungeon,
or a (XII) dungeon?

Relying on the rarity stars alone does a very poor job, and checking for synergy stats is extremely tedious (you cant sort by synergized ATK).
The tier rule: this simple method ranks items (approximately) just by looking at the namesfast and easy.
1) An items tier ranking is the number of rarity stars displayed in the game, with one modification:
a) either add 2 If there is item synergy,
b) or subtract 1/2 for each +, but do this only if there is no item synergy.
2) For tied tiers, take the item with the highest natural rarity.

In a (XII) dungeon, the tier rule ranks the items in a very different order:

In both dungeons, the tier lists are roughly in ATK order. The tier rule has managed to account for rarity, combining, and synergy without having to look up any stats.
The stripes in this chart show tiers 19 for weapons. (For clarity, Ive omitted thrown weapons and weapons with MAG, since they have unusually low ATK.)
When comparing two items, the rule says to take the item in the rightmost tier, or the bottommost item in the same tier. In nearly every case, this picks the item with
the mostor nearly mostATK.

For armor, its a little more complicated since there are two stats (DEF and RES), emphasized differently in different armor types.
If we assume that well face equal numbers of physical and magic attacks, its possible to mathematically combine the two stats into a single Protection pseudostat
which we can use to make a chart. For example, a 100 DEF, 100 RES item is considered to have a 100 PROT stat. An item with 40 DEF and 209 RES also has 100 PROT,
since both items let the same total damage through if we take equal numbers of physical and magic attacks.

(For clarity Ive omitted Bracers and Shields since they have unusually low DEF and RES, making the stripes more zig-zaggy.)
As we saw for weapons, the tiers do a reasonable job of organizing the variety of rarities, upgrades, and synergy into roughly increasing stat order.
The Armor type makes a poor showing here compared to other item types. If I were to adjust my PROT formula to emphasize physical defense more than magical
(since magical damage is less common), Armor would appear a bit stronger in the chart.

The tier rule has saved me a lot of effort and reduced my irritation at the game, so I hope some of you will also find it handy.

Heroic daily dungeons: enemy weaknesses and kill thresholds


The dailies are much easier if you can kill everything on turn 1. The minimum ATK or MAG needed to kill with various skills is given below, laid out as follows.
The second line applies if you have certain bonuses: Boost for physical skills, or one piece of adds light Earth damage gear for Quake.

Example: a Cactuar (weak to Ice) dies to 2 Boosted Attacks at 206 ATK, one Blizzara Strike at 186 ATK, one Firaga at 248 MAG, or one Blizzaga at 163 MAG.
For readability, numbers above 280 (level 65 char with 5-star item) are dimmed, and above 360 (level 65 with 5-star synergy item) are even dimmer.
For monsters with an area attack or a nasty status effect, a percentage is given for the chance per turn to use the AoE or successfully apply the status.
The Un column indicates if the monster is undead (healing spells damage it, and Raise kills it).

Miscellaneous
Ability types and damage types:
The game hides a lot of internal details about abilities, which can cause confusion about certain interactions.
Damage types:

Abilities that do damage are calculated using one of various formulas. The main formulas are Physical and Magical.
o
Physical damage is based on ATK and DEF. In rare cases, an ability may be designed to pierce DEF by setting it to 1 in the formula.
o
Magical damage is based on MAG and RES, although white magic uses MND instead.
o
Raw damage has a fixed value that ignores stats (the 1000 Needles ability used by some monsters is an example).
o
Some abilities like Gravity use a percentage of either maximum or current HP, ignoring stats.

Physical damage is affected by row position (unless the weapon or ability is long range), has a miss chance based on ACC and EVA, and can critically hit.

Magical damage always carries an elemental type (fire, ice, lightning, earth, wind, water, bio/poison, dark, holy, non-elemental).

Physical damage may optionally carry an elemental type (internally this is an Elemental Physical Attack). Note that non-elemental is just another
elemental type, and is not the same thing as physical. No Physical damage abilities use the non-elemental element.
Ability types:

Each ability has a hidden type, which we can abbreviate as PHY, WHT, BLK, BLU, SUM, NAT, and NIN (not yet used in Global FFRK).

PHY abilities generally do Physical damage.

WHT, BLK, BLU, and SUM generally do Magical damage.

WHT abilities calculate damage based on MND stat rather than MAG.

SUM abilities have a special minimum damage calculation, which only matters if the caster has very low MAG.

NAT (internally called Inborn) abilties use a variety of damage formulas. Several damaging monster abilities are NAT. Many non-damaging abilities are
NAT, including Intimidate, Cry, Boost, Salve, and Retaliate.

Since NAT attacks are not PHY or BLK, they interact differently with certain effects like Reflect and counterattacks. A few examples of NAT attacks are
Cripple, Angelo Cannon, Angel Wing Bolt, and Doublecast Venom.
Interactions with ability types:

Faraway enemies cant be damaged with PHY abilities unless a long range weapon is used. (Note that non-PHY Physical damage skills can hit Faraway.)

Silence prevents WHT, BLK, BLU, and SUM abilities from being used.

Reflect only affects single target WHT and BLK (these two are called Basic Magic). Reflect does affect magical counterattacks.

Retaliate only affects PHY attacks. I believe that Retaliate does not affect physical counterattacks.

Sleep and Confusion are only broken by damage from PHY abilities, not other sources of Physical damage.

Paladin Cecils Sentinel soul break taunts single-target PHY and BLK.

Celes Runic Blade soul break taunts single-target BLK abilities.

Record materia that give damage bonuses for using a certain weapon only work with PHY skills that do Physical damage (or BLK skills doing Magical
damage for Vivis Rod Master).

Mastery requires 5/6 of the total medals. I like to calculate this by saying its OK to lose a total of 1.5 per subdungeon, and another 0.5 per special condition.
Action medals: Medals are lost at ~2.65 and 6 actions per monster. Big monsters only count as 1 monster. A boss round is 12 (even a round with multiple bosses).

Damage medals: Medals are lost for taking ~29.4% and 57.7% of the partys HP at subdungeon start. Hence, losing medals is more likely if you start with low HP.
KO medals: 1 lost for 12 KOs, 2 lost for 34 KOs. KOs only count if they happened during the subdungeon. Reviving preserves the medals. (Petrify is not a KO.)
Target score medals seem to always grant either 0 or 3 medals based on the condition being met. KO conditions come in several types:
Defeat <boss> without being KOd medals are lost if a character dies for any reason. Reviving does not preserve these medals.
Defeat <boss> without being KOd (yes, same text) might instead refer only to a KO from boss damage. Reviving does not preserve these medals.
Win without <character> being KOd awards its medals if the character is in the party and is not at 0 HP at the end. Reviving preserves the medals.
Although mythril resurrection restores HP, the damage medals are still based on the initial total HP when the subdungeon was first entered.

Soul gauge: Taking damage from an enemy adds 10% of a soul break charge. (Internally, the gauge is measured in points, with one charge being 500 points.)
Abilities (that dont miss) add 10% for Attack, 11% for most 12 abilities, 12% for most 34 abilities. Wrath adds 36% of a charge.
Using Retaliate adds 16% of a charge, but the counterattack adds nothing. Attacking a retaliator always misses, so the attacker gains nothing.
Hitting a weakness fills the gauge by 1.5x as much as normal.

Automatic targeting of attacks:


The game will auto-target most abilities to the enemy with lowest percent HP remaining. Double Cut might split its attacks if all enemies are at same % HP.
Jump, Death Strike, and Shuriken will auto-target to the highest percent HP.
Status inflicting abilities randomly choose a target without the status, but the xxx Break abilities are completely random.
Some abilities are randomly targeted: Clouds Sonic Break, for example.

Berserk/Confuse: Both of these force the target to use a specific ability each turn.
For party members, the ability is always Attack. Each monster uses a different ability, which might not even be one that it normally uses.
Confused creatures target a random enemy or ally, even possibly themselves. Berserked creatures always target a random enemy.
When Berserked or Confused, the ability used always affects only the target chosen, even if its normally an area effect.
Berserked/Confused attacks ignore taunt effects and Reflect (and Retaliate?).
The targets ATB bar is reset when the status is applied and also when it expires.

% HP attacks like Gravity and Cripple are affected by KO resistance, e.g. the Safety Bit accessory. Most bosses have KO resistance.
Status resistance vs enemy attacks:
When a party member attacks a monster, the hit chance is a flat percentage based on the ability or item being used.
When a party member is the target, the hit chance depends on the type of ability being used:

Auto-Hit abilities have 100% hit chance unless the party member has any resistance items, in which case it has 0% chance.

Random abilities have hit chance 3% + 3% Hit rateResistance. Characters start with a Resistance of 1 and the Hit rate varies depending on the monster
ability being used. Minor resist items generally set Resistance to 2 (3 with synergy), and multiple items add their Resistances.
Note that when a party member attacks another party member, the random status formula is used, giving a higher chance than when a monster is the target.

Items with special effects:


Adds light earth damage really means that it increases the earth damage you do, usually by 1.2x.
Elemental resistance reduces damage taken by 10% per Resistance level past the first (a hidden stat, loosely indicated by the adjectives minor and moderate).
Accessories with element or status resistance can benefit from synergy.

Fire Ring (minor resistance) has Elemental Resistance 2 (3), which means 10% (20%) fire damage taken. Similar for Ice Ring.

Star Pendant, Peace Ring, Silver Glasses (minor resistance) have Status Resistance 2 (3), cutting status hit chance by 50% (67%).
Weapons or armor with element or status resistance do not benefit from synergy.

Ice Shield (moderate resistance) has Elemental Resistance 4 (no synergy bonus), or 30% fire damage taken
Elemental resistance seems to use the strongest value from all worn items (so a resist item completely overrides a weakness item).
Status effect chances for specific items (note that using a skill which applies a status will prevent the items status from happening):

Killer Bow (V) 3% KO

Whip (IV) and Blitz Whip (IV) 5% Paralyze

Summoner soul breaks: Summoners Call I gets Goblin (25%), Chocobo (25%), Bomb (50%), and Call II gets Goblin/Chocobo/Shiva/Ifrit/Ramuh at equal odds.

Potions (blue) heal 10% of HP. Hi Potions (green) heal 25% of HP. X Potions (pink) heal 50% HP (not in Global yet).
Ethers (yellow) choose a random ability on each character and refill 20% of its uses, rounded up. Turbo Ethers (orange) refill 33% (not in Global yet).
