Listening (Exercise 2)
Listen to a talk about writing cover letters and complete the spaces with the words that you hear
(no more than 3 words).

It certainly isnt easy to come up with a good cover letter. You need to capture the reader's
attention without 1._________________________. There is a lot of advice out there about how to
write a compelling cover letter, a cover letter that convinces the employer that you can help them 2.
_________________________ but maybe there should be more advice on how to avoid writing a
stupid cover letter, a cover letter that dooms your CV to the trash bin.

One thing you should never do is claim that you are 3. _________________________ for the job.
You dont know who the other applicants are, and you certainly dont know what 4.
_________________________ they offer, so dont presume. Limit yourself to explaining how your
experience and your skills set 5. _________________________ for the position, and the company.
According to many HR specialists, another non-starter is referring to yourself as a hard worker. So
what? Its hardly 6. _________________________ these days. After all, no one is out there
referring to themselves as a soft-worker. What you should do instead is 7.
_________________________. Demonstrate that you are the sort of person who takes initiative in
the beginning and sees things through to the end.

Next, dont be generic in your cover letter. 8. _________________________ your company and
your industry and you make it seem that you 9. _________________________ to write a fresh
letter to that company. And, never, ever, send a non-personalized cover letter. A letter addressed
To Whom It May Concern or Dear Sir is addressed, in reality, Dear Trash Bin. Take the time to
find out the name of the hiring manager 10. _________________________ you should be writing
to. It is, after all, what your competition is doing.
