INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Proposal

1. Internship Proposed:
I am interning at Reliance Industries Ltd. The Reliance Technology Group (RTG)
for the period 23rd Feb 2015 to 11th May 2015.
The topic for my internship is Hydrogen Strategy Formulation for driving
PEM Fuel Cell Technology Applications.

2. Description of Internship in brief:

Organisation:
The Reliance Technology Group (RTG), RIL Groups integrated, central technology
organization, helps create superior value by harnessing internal R&D skills and
competencies and by innovating in emerging technology domains related to
RILs various businesses. Besides participating in various collaborative projects in
India and overseas, the RTG does research and development work in cuttingedge technologies, such as fuel cells, carbon fibres, bio-fuels, and gasification of
several types of feedstock, etc.
The RTG also creates business value and competitive advantage for RIL by
selecting, buying and customizing the right technology - at the right cost and at
the right time and is geared to meet the current and future needs of the company

through some of the following initiatives:

Identification of the technology needs of various businesses of the RIL

Group and top-level coordination to ensure seamless technology
integration across all businesses and manufacturing facilities

Ensuring economies of scale and optimization of selected technologies

through a high performance work culture, and on a real-time basis

Maximizing value from current assets and creating new growth

opportunities through a process-centric approach

My project:
Reliance Technology Group is currently working on fuel cell technology. Fuel cell
systems have long been considered suitable for remote stationary power
applications with a high cost of downtime, such as mobile base stations. Fuel cell
design and manufacturing improvements, combined with increased volumes
being produced, have seen costs decline whilst technical performance, reliability
and longevity has improved.
The fuel cell systems that would be installed in telecoms of Reliance all will
convert hydrogen into electricity at their final stage.
Therefore, Production and transportation of hydrogen and its delivery to the
actual point of use in a cost effective manner is a key component of hydrogen
supply chain network. Hydrogen may be produced at large-scale central
locations and then transported to multiple end use destinations. Alternatively, it
can be produced onsite at small-scale decentralized locations closer to the point
of use.
The report describes the development of a strategy for hydrogen production
(Central, Distributed or On-site) and transporting (Road, Rail or Pipelines) it to
geographically distributed PEM fuel cells by analysing the cost associated with
the different available production methods and modes of transporting hydrogen
to come out with an optimal hydrogen supply strategy with the help of an
economic model as a viable hydrogen supply chain network requires that
hydrogen be able to be delivered from where it's produced to the point of enduse.

3. Objective of the internship:

a. To develop a hydrogen strategy for producing and transporting hydrogen to
geographically distributed PEM fuel cells.
b. To have understanding of the on-going project of the organization.
c. To understand the corporate culture.

6. Limitations:
a. Lack of available and/or reliable data.
b. Knowledge for understanding some of the technical concepts. Plan to tackle
this limitation is by taking guidance from the company guide and the
colleagues.

7. Remarks:
The work Ill be carrying out is a part of an on-going R&D project of Reliance
Technology Group (RTG) of Reliance Industries Limited. So, the report made in

the end would be a confidential report and cannot be submitted to the college in
its original form. Generic version of the report would be shared with the college
to maintain the secrecy of the confidential data.
