Growth and physiological responses to water and

nutrient stress in oil palm

INTRODUCTION
Plant growth and physiology are affected
by water regime and nutrition content.
The plant will response differently
between in well water condition and
water stress condition and with
fertilization and no fertilization. The plant
reaction were observed in s in plant
growth, dry matter allocation, relative
water content, leaf relative
conductivity and leaf N, P and K
concentration .

AIM
o observe the effect of water and
nutrient stress to the plant growth and
the physiology rate of the plant.
To know how Plant response to the
water and nutrient stress on the
different environment condition.
Material and method

METHODS
Medium with two different field water
capacity which is 90% and 50% were
prepared.
Two nutrient level with and without
fertilizer also been prepared.
Every second day medium was watering
and manuring to maintain on constant
condition that needed in the experiment.

90% water capacity is well watered condition.

50% water capacity in water stress condition.

Discussion

RESULTS

The effects of the interaction between water

and fertilization on plant height, leaf area, and
dry mass accumulation (including total biomass,
root, stem and leaf mass) are observe, water is
more limiting than nutrient because the
increase in growth between well-watered and
water stressed with fertilization was greater
than between fertilized and non-fertilized in the
well-watered treatment. To know the values of
the parameter root and shoot, it is decreased in
the conditions with fertilization when compared
to conditions without fertilization, despite the
same watering regimes. These results indicate
that supply fertilization treatments could reduce
the growth of roots as well as promote the
growth of shoots, especially the growth of
leaves. water and nutrient stress decreased leaf
nitrogen and phosphorus concentration but
increased potassium concentration.

Four experiment were conducted :

90% water capacity with applied fertilizer.
50% water capacity, water stress condition with
applied fertilizer.
90% water capacity without applied fertilizer.
50% water capacity, water stress condition without
applied fertilizer.
Growth measurement
Plant height measure is distance from soil to surface
upper end of the longest leaves.
Total leaves area are determine by portable laser area
meter.
Measurement.
Relative water capacity record the turgid weight of
fresh leaves sample, keeping them in water in 24 hours.
Followed by drying in hot air oven until constant weight
achieved.
Leaf relative conductivity after treatment , fully
expended leaves were randomly selected from three
seedling per replication. The percentage of membrane
damage was calculate.
Chlorophyll content was determine using a
spectrophotometer.

CONCLUSIONS
Deficiency of both water and nutrients in
combination had the greatest impact on
changes in these traits of oil palm. The growth,
biomass partitioning, nutrient concentration and
the morphological and physiological properties
of oil palm were affected by water and nutrient
availability, but it appeared more affected by
water stress. Fertilization under well-watered
conditions alleviated the nutrient stress, while
fertilization under water-stressed conditions
aggravated the drought stress, by dissolving the
fertilizer.
.

Determination of nutrient content in oil palm leaves.

The leaves for the nitrogen, phosphorus, and
potassium content analysis were dried at 80C until
constant weight and then ground.
The total N and its proportional concentration (N%)
were analysed with the micro-Kjeldahl method.
The total P was determined by using molybdate-blue
colorimetric method.
Potassium from samples was determined by analysing
with a flame photometer.
