 UMA EXPERIÊNCIA (DO) EXCESSO
No meu calendário de estudante não houve Queima
das Fitas. Em rigor, o tempo era outro. No interior da
convulsão revolucionária, mesmo se entretanto normali-
zada pela ordem constitucional, ainda se não extinguira
o incêndio das escolhas radicais.
A nossa memória talvez nunca como então pôde ser
dita memória do futuro: de nenhuma outra substância
era feita, a sua matéria era o que ainda não há e o que
ainda não é.
O passado, o presente e o futuro eram percorridos
por um duplo fio enigmático, duas tensões quase
contraditórias mas que constituem, porventura, o traço
mais profundo da situação revolucionária: a linearidade
própria dos optimismos históricos (sobretudo dos que
se situavam à esquerda e mais ou menos marcados
pelo marxismo) mas ao mesmo tempo uma espécie de
imanência ao presente de todo o passado e de todo o
futuro; um presente integralmente aberto, o presente
que é o desenlace-germe, o fim e o princípio, o espaço
e o tempo singulares da plena compatibilidade do pas-

antecipadamente se desconhece.

expression of the university exposing itself to the city and the world. This event is simultaneously able to arouse in-
terest, for the anthropological aspect (due to its complex ancestral culture), the sociological aspect (by bringing to-
gether struggle and festivity) and the aesthetic-cultural aspect (due to the almost music festival aspect and the vis-
ual and sound aspect of the event). It is the periodic resurrection of a community, of a common experience: bodies,
voices, chants, sounds, cries, and drunkenness of the excess, where the whole common experience is unpredict-
able and is termed to be excessive.

 Tradição de Sempre e Para Sempre!
As origens da Queima das Fitas de Coimbra remontam
ao século XIX, mais precisamente no ano de 1899. Nes-
se ano os estudantes de Coimbra, numa réplica daquilo
que teriam sido os Centenários entre 1880 e 1888, deci-
diram comemorar o Centenário da Sebenta. Só que esta
comemoração teve um carácter crítico, tendo por base
a Sebenta e a exploração dos “sebenteiros”, realizando-
se um cortejo alegórico e um sarau.
Nos anos posteriores, o 4º ano jurídico, dentro do
mesmo espírito, organiza eventos semelhantes ao Cen-
tenário da Sebenta, introduzindo a inovação de queimar
as fitas que se usavam nas pastas como condição de
pré-finalistas com o objectivo futuro de terminar o curso
no ano seguinte. Ainda hoje esta tradição se mantém
com a Queima do Grelo (Fita) realizada horas antes do
Cortejo dos Grelados.
Avançamos até 1905, aquando da realização do “Enter-
ro do Grau”; esta celebração foi provocada pela reforma
dos cursos da Universidade de Coimbra, na qual se
aboliu o grau de Bacharel. Esta festa já teve alguma par-
ticipação activa da cidade de Coimbra, antecipando já o
que viria a ser mais tarde chamada, a Queima das Fitas.

desta festa, remonta mesmo ao Centenário da Sebenta.
O Cortejo com os seus carros alegóricos devidamente
enfeitados, levam consigo os estudantes fitados, num
espírito de agradecimento à cidade os anos de curso.
Podemos também atribuir um certo espírito crítico a
este evento pelos vários elementos que os vários carros
participantes transportam.
O Sarau consiste numa verdadeira mostra cultural das
secções e organismos da Associação Académica de
Coimbra. De notar que os saraus também foram origi-
nários daquilo que se veio transformar na Queima das
Fitas.
O Chá Dançante é sem mais nem menos a destruição
do cenário do Baile de Gala, por parte dos estudantes

Fitas de Coimbra se assume como a maior e mais antiga
festa de estudantes do país. A sua imponência e fama
envolve pessoas de todo o país e até do estrangeiro.
Atrevo-me a dizer que é um evento único no mundo. Mas
nunca é demais relembrar que a Queima das Fitas não
se cinge às Noites do Parque e aos Eventos Tradicionais;
tanto antes como depois dessa semana a Queima das
Fitas comporta uma panóplia de actividades culturais e
desportivas que dinamizam a cidade por mais ou menos
três meses, espelhando duas das grandes bandeiras da
AAC que são a cultura e o desporto.
Por tudo aquilo que foi, por tudo aquilo que é, e por tudo
aquilo que será, a Queima das Fitas de Coimbra será
sempre única e significará sempre tradição. Tradição
essa que foi de sempre, que é de sempre e ficará para
sempre.

The introduction of the Treaty of Bologna at the University of Coimbra has lead to changes in the setting dates for the
traditional events of the “Queima”, because it is necessary to ensure that all traditions are kept for those students who
just graduate and do not go on to Master’s. This battle is still going.
It should be taken into account that the “Queima das Fitas” of Coimbra is the biggest and most ancient student fes-
tivity in the country. Its grandeur and importance involves people from the whole country and even from foreign coun-
tries. I even dare say that it is a unique event in the world. But it is important to know that the “Queima das Fitas” is
not merely the Nights at the Park and the traditional events. There is a variety of cultural and sports activities, both be-
fore and after the week of the “Queima das Fitas” that liven up the city for about three months, reflecting the two ma-
jor banners of the AAC which are culture and Sport.
For all it has been, and all that it is and will be, the “Queima das Fitas” of Coimbra will always be unique, and will al-
ways mean tradition, the ancient old tradition that will always remain.

A Queima das Fitas de Coimbra assume-se como a
maior e mais antiga festa académica do país. Envolve,
não só toda a comunidade estudantil coimbrã, mas
também, inúmeras pessoas de todo o país. Nesta altura
deslocam-se a Coimbra para participar nesta festa, seja
pelos concertos, actividades culturais e desportivas ad-
jacentes ao evento, quer por toda a tradição e a mística
que a envolve. De referir que, a Queima das Fitas de
Coimbra é um evento de âmbito nacional e internacional.
Este evento personifica todo o espírito e tradição que
tanto caracteriza esta cidade. É um evento ímpar que
se afirma como um marco, não só na vida académica
coimbrã, bem como, a nível nacional. Envolvendo uma
panóplia de eventos tradicionais, de actividades cultu-
rais e desportivas, a Queima das Fitas, “festa de secular
tradição”, é a maior festa académica do país, caracteri-
zada por um espírito muito próprio que a todos contagia.
A Queima das Fitas assumiu-se em 2008, como um das
forças vivas da cidade de Coimbra, não só na Semana
das Noites do Parque, mas num horizonte temporal e de

cumpriu o seu papel fomentando a ajuda de todos e o
espírito solidário aos mais carenciados.
Organizar a Queima das Fitas foi sem dúvida uma ex-
periência bastante enriquecedora, da qual certamente
toda a organização se orgulha. Espera-se que no futuro
se mantenham, não só, políticas semelhantes e se pos-
sível melhoradas, bem como se eleve e se digne cada
vez mais o estatuto da Queima das Fitas de Coimbra, o

no último cortejo da Latada. E agora, olhamos para a
nossa pasta negra e o que vemos? As fitas com a cor
do curso. As fitas onde vão ser gravadas as palavras
daqueles que nos são mais queridos e que fizeram parte
de nós ao longo da nossa vida académica.
Quem de nós nunca derramou uma lágrima numa
serenata ao som dos acordes da Guitarra de Coimbra?
Quem de nós nunca sentiu a euforia de um Cortejo?
Quem de nós nunca sentiu o auge do espírito académi-
co na Queima das Fitas? Com certeza que muito poucos
ou quase nenhuns.
E agora que vai chegando a hora da despedida per-
guntamos: Valeu a pena? Sim! Valeu! Ser estudante de
Coimbra é participar na realidade desta cidade, a cidade
dos estudantes. É viver a sua tradição única. É embele-
zar as ruas com as capas negras ao vento. É deixar que
a saudade seja o sangue que nos dá vida.

 Memória de um Ex-Comissário
Já lá vai longínquo o dia em que decidi ser Comissário
da Queima das Fitas 2008. Certamente que sabia aquilo
que me esperava durante 6 longos meses, tudo em mim
era entusiasmo, mas ao mesmo tempo receio, pois caía
sobre mim o peso da responsabilidade de organizar
aquela que é uma das maiores festas académicas do
mundo. Seria eu capaz? Estaria à altura? Qual seria o
resultado? Eram tudo questões que me surgiam a toda
a hora. Mesmo assim encarei o desafio e fui em frente.
Apresentei a minha candidatura e preparei com an-
siedade o dia das eleições. Era preciso convencer os
grelados da minha faculdade a vestirem Capa e Batina
para poderem votar em mim. Chega o dia das eleições e
aí conheci aqueles que poderiam vir a ser meus colegas
na comissão central. Nesse ano éramos quase todos
candidatos únicos, só duas faculdades é que estavam
a disputar o lugar na comissão central. Começou nesse
dia uma nova aventura, nesse dia conheci sete pessoas
a que ainda hoje chamo amigos.
Os meses longos de trabalho começavam agora. Pri-
meiro tinha de se repartir os vários pelouros pelos oito
(Presidência, Tesouraria, Cortejo e Garraiada, Cultura,

num ápice, foi com saudade e com algumas lágrimas à
mistura que os oito comissários se despediam da sema-
na mais importante da Queima das Fitas, ao som das
guitarradas e de olhos fitos no Mondego que espelhava
as cores do fogo-de-artifício.
E hoje, um ano e meio depois, ao recordar aquele ano
fantástico respondo as questões que coloquei no início
do texto: Seria eu capaz? Fui capaz! Estaria a altura?
Estive! Qual seria o resultado? Mais do que o resultado
económico, foi o resultado de 25 pessoas e respectivos
colaboradores que fizeram daquela Queima uma das
melhores de sempre, Queima essa que apelidámos de
“A Queima da Amizade”!
Fui comissário, e se me perguntarem se valeu a pena
todo o esforço, dedicação e abdicação de muita coisa,
eu respondo: Valeu e voltaria a ser comissário, por amor

this text: can I do it? Yes I did it! Did I have the competencies? Yes I did! and what would the result be? More than the eco-
nomic result, was those 25 people that made and their respective assistants who made this Queima one of the best ever.

I was a commissioner, and if I am asked if it was worth all the effort dedication and giving up lots of things, my answer is:
Yes it was worth it and I would be a commissioner again, for the love of this 110 year old tradition and for all my colleagues.
