WELCOME SPEECH
Knowledge and innovation are the foundation for sustainability in
Bremens economy. Particularly in light of highly dynamic changes
in business and working processes, triggered by the increasing
digitalization of the economy, the increase of innovation capacity
presents an important challenge for companies in maintaining
and developing their competitive advantage.
People are the center of the innovation process, daring something
new with courage, creativity and self-initiative. The fundamental
mechanism of transferring ideas beyond the thought process
and thus, a functional transition from college into industry and
commerce. Bremen has not only a network of brilliant scientific
institutions and research facilities at its disposal, but is a city of
talent with a large reservoir of highly educated young people.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Inspiration incites innovation. Jacobs University is the place where
youll find it.
It is not without reason that our motto is: Inspiration is a place! Active
engagement in research and exceptional hands-on experience in realworld work environments is a matter of course for us. From the very first
day of their first semester, our students find themselves working in stateof-the-art laboratories. Over the course of their studies, they participate
in several internships lasting many months that are in strong, often
internationally-operated companies. They develop their own networks
and learn early to apply their knowledge within an economic framework.
Our approach to research is just as inspiring: In the search for
solutions to global problems of the 21st century, strict boundaries
between academic disciplines are no longer appropriate. At Jacobs
University, weve abandoned these and instead have honed in on
three focus areas of tremendous societal relevance. Through a transdisciplinary education, our students are equipped with the necessary
core competencies to face the challenges of a constantly changing
global economy, and to flourish on the international job market.

I studied Earth and Space Sciences

and Integrated Environmental
Studies at JUB and what drove me
to start ACSK Clothing is the feeling
of satisfaction I get from making
something people will end up
using every day. Designing something on a computer
screen and then seeing it come alive after months of
prototyping with suppliers is an absolutely amazing
feeling. Designing and developing products from
scratch for our customers also gives me the ability to
apply what I learned at JUB and now at Yale to design
to the greatest possible extent environmentally be
nign products so I can make my small contribution
towards preserving our natural environment.
A computer science PhD, a cognitive systems and

processes PhD and a project engineering doctorate
from three different countries are a great foundation
for diversity in the business world, which is some
thing that is fostered at Jacobs daily.

I am Kent Bridgewater, a member

of the Class of 2004 and majored in
ISS. My machine building start up
is called BRIGE. BRIGE stands for a
hygienic revolution in the surface
technology industry. Together with
Sven Simeitis, my partner, we developed a high tech
cleaning system to clean conveyor systems in produc
tion facilities. I truly enjoy walking on this new BRIGE
path. I am truly blessed to find how many take interest
in BRIGE and join me on my road into the future.
My name is Tom Suberg and I am the co-founder and

CEO of Crowdstars. I graduated from Jacobs in 2014
and majored in International Logistics Management
and Engineering. I decided
to found my own company
right after graduating,
because I did not want to
get stuck in corporate
structures while I am still
young and creative.

I started my first company MCorp

on my 20th birthday during my
final year at Jacobs, where I studied
Physics. Already prior and during
my studies, I have been working on
tech projects, and I wanted to give
it a try after leaving Jacobs. We focus on building
automation technology, esp. in software development
and deployment, because it is something I needed
to make my work easier and more efficient and I knew
others could find equally useful.
We are Flavia and Alex and we

founded Take Off Labs in 2011, right
after graduating from Jacobs Uni
versity, where we majored in EECS
and CS, respectively. Initially, we
founded the company to have a le
gal structure for our freelance work,
but in time the offered services diversified we conti
nue to help startups with their scaling needs, but also
have our own suite of Golf software products success
fully used globally by tens of thousands of golfers.

The Alfred Wegener Institute carries out research in the Arctic

and Antarctic as well as in the high and mid latitude oceans.
The institute coordinates German polar research and makes
important infrastructure, e.g. the research icebreaker Polarstern

What we do:
We clean as a service and sell a high tech cleaning system for
overhead conveyor chains used in production facilities
In more detail:
Parts, which need coating, require special protection from debris
falling from overhead conveyers, such as widely used Power &
Free systems. Contaminated parts are rejected during the produc
tion process and create unnecessary costs. This risk can now
be eliminated using the innovative high pressure cleaning system
from BRIGE GmbH. The cleaning system is directly attached
to the conveyor chain. Utilizing its intelligent automatic controls
it cleans and dries the conveyor chain in one simple step. It even
operates during active production. In addition, the system is
ecologically engineered to save energy and recycles the water
used for cleaning.

Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg is an inter

Research at MARUM has the overarching goal to achieve a better

understanding of key processes in the marine environment in
order to provide information for sustainable use of the ocean.
The research themes are: Ocean and Climate, Geosphere-Bio

and present environmental changes from the coast to the deep
sea at a global scale. Processes at and below the seafloor are a
special research focus. The second major goal of MARUM is the
training of young scientists. Within the framework of the Graduate
School GLOMAR (Bremen International Graduate School for
Marine Sciences) interdisciplinary training of doctoral students
in marine sciences (incl. social sciences and law) is achieved. A
third goal is to develop and provide technology and infrastructure
for marine research in cooperation with industry. MARUM operates underwater technologies, including two remotely operated
vehicles, an underwater drill rig and an autonomous underwater
vehicle. MARUM also operates one of the three IODP core repositories in the world and, together with the AWI, the World Data

of all academic fields to commit for a two-year fulltime service in
schools in challenging districts as teaching Fellows.
Fellows have to excel in a rigorous selection process, run through
a very intense pedagogic training and receive constant feedback
and coaching while in service. During the two year placement in
schools, they develop extraordinary leadership skills.
Our alumni are influencing the development of the German education sector from various leadership positions in administration,
the economy, politics or civil society organizations (e.g. as founders
of schools for underprivileged kids, as teacher trainers or
politicians).
