The History of
Classical Music
Part 4
sophisticated ancient cultures of the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Chinese, it took roughly 41,000 years from
40,000 BC to 1000 AD before anyone
devised a lasting formula for preserving
music in the same way that had benefitted
the other art forms for millennia. It then took
a further 600 years to arrive at a standardized universal system of notation.
Having had such a relatively slow start,
however, music has more than made up for
lost time, as demonstrated by this impressive
collection. Presented chronologically, it
enables you to hear how rapidly music has
developed. Sometimes, in a single volume,
you can detect a huge leap within the space
of 25 years.
Yet of course the works in this collection
represent only a miniscule number of all
those composed since music was first writ-
composers such as Tallis and Byrd in England, Victoria in Spain, Palestrina in Italy,
and Lassus in the Netherlands producing complex and richly expressive music to fill the
naves of great European cathedrals, churches
and chapels. Vol. 3 The tradition of instrumental music was established, with Italy leading the way in its development during the latter half of the century.
Most importantly, music began to be printed. Limited and expensive though they were,
scores reproduced in a book were now available, enabling musicians to stand around
them to sing or play their parts. No wonder
the new medium spread throughout Europe
so rapidly.

Vol. 520
For a century and a half from 1600, the musical world would be dominated by Italy, to such
a degree that it henceforth adopted Italian as
its lingua franca. Composers since then
almost universally have written their performance directions in Italian. One particular
Vol. 1115 In his own day, Bach was considered old-fashioned, a mere provincial composer from central Germany, but his music
contains some of the noblest and most sublime expressions of the human spirit. With him
the art of contrapuntal writing reached its
apogee, yet the technical brilliance of his
music is subsumed in its expressive power,
especially in his keyboard music, church cantatas and other great choral masterpieces like
the St. Matthew Passion and Mass in B minor.
His instrumental music is evidence that he
was by no means always the stern God-fearing
Lutheran. The Goldberg Variations, the Italian
Concerto and the six exuberant Brandenburg
Concertos, for example, show that he was well
acquainted with the sunny Italian way of doing
things. Many of his most beautiful and deepest
thoughts are reserved for the concertos and
orchestral suites. His influence on composers
and musicians down the years has been
immeasurable. For many he remains the foundation stone of their art.
Bachs great German contemporary was

For the first half of the 19th century, the period of cultural history commonly identified as
Romanticism, Europe was gripped by general
political unrest, culminating in the 1848 uprisings. Nationalism, self-expression and the
struggle for individual freedom were reflected
in all the arts. It is important, however, to
understand that Romanticism in music does
not represent the antithesis of the Classical
style but rather its prolongation and transformation. That is why Beethoven, generally held
up as the culminating figure of Viennese Classicism, is no less fairly classified as a paradigm of Romantic subjectivity. Nor was there
any break in this stylistic evolution at midcentury: musical Romanticism, along with
distinctive national variants, continued into the
20th century.
Late Romantic

tre. During the late 1800s, music had gradually begun to incorporate intervals outside the
prevailing diatonic i.e. major and minor
scales, with the result that a work would feature an extraordinary amount of modulation
from one key to another. (This is known as
chromatic writing, since intervals from the
12-note chromatic scale as opposed to the
seven-note diatonic scales are used to harmonize a piece.) Thus the tonal centre of a
piece of music became less obvious. Schoenberg went further and asked If I can introduce
these chromatic notes into my music, can a
particular key be said to exist at all? Why
should any note be foreign to any given key?
Why shouldnt the twelve semitones of the
chromatic scale be accorded equal significance?
Thus was born twelve-tone technique
(serial or dodecaphonic are other names for
this compositional approach) and the music of
the so-called Second Viennese School of
Schoenberg and his disciples Berg and
Webern (in succession to the First Viennese
School of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven). Not
all composers were attracted to the new tech-
nique, but dissonance, atonality and the abandonment of singable melody were strong
features of many composers work in the last
century, a period in which the avant-garde
took far longer to become assimilated by the
non-specialist music lover than the avantgarde of previous centuries. The polyrhythmic,
polytonal music of the pioneering American
Charles Ives Vol. 82, for example, once
seemed far too complex and radical ever to
achieve popularity. The very different voices
of acknowledged modern masters such as
John Cage, Elliott Carter, Luciano Berio and
Luigi Nono (the list is endless) remain a closed
book for many listeners, while inspiring a
fanatical following among others.
Other paths taken by music in the 20th
century retained the link with tonality and
(increasingly) with accessible melody. Harsh
and acid though some of the music composed
by Sergei Prokofiev Vol. 89 may be, his style
is a tangible descendant of the Romantics. His
Soviet compatriot Dmitri Shostakovich
Vol. 92, who shared Prokofievs penchant for
the spiky, humorous and satirical, followed on
from the same tradition, but the introspection,
ideas of Chaldean astrology. Of the succeeding generation, arguably the most important
figure has been Benjamin Britten Vol. 93,
whose many impressive stage works firmly
established English music on the international
stage.
In France, the most important composers
in the decades following Debussy and Ravel
were Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud and
Francis Poulenc, three disparate figures of a
sextet loosely grouped together as Les Six
(the other three made comparatively negligible
contributions), influenced by the whimsical
and eccentric composer Eric Satie and promoted by the writer-designer-filmmaker Jean
Cocteau. The most significant French composer of the second half of the 20th century
was the eccentric Catholic visionary Olivier
Messiaen Vol. 96, also an outstanding
organist and teacher, who introduced elements of non-European music and birdsong
into the language of Western music. Vol. 97

Gregorianische Choral (lateinisch cantus
Organum (schlichtere zweistimmige Stcke)
In England kombinierte John Dunstable feste rhythmische

Liedes. In seinen lyrisch-innigen Symphonien
verbindet er romantischen Ausdruck mit klassischer Struktur.
Der rasche Fortschritt des Klavierbaus trug
dazu bei, dass das Klavier zum beliebtesten
Instrument der Romantik avancierte. Kurz
nach der Wende zum 19. Jahrhundert wurden
erstaunlich viele komponierende Pianisten
geboren; die bedeutendsten waren Liszt und
Chopin. Frdric Chopin Vol. 4244 war
zweifellos der Meister des romantischen Klavierstils. Er schrieb ausschlielich Musik fr

vorherrschenden musikalischen Schulen
neo-klassizistischen Stil schrieb. Und ein
Komponist wie Aaron Copland hat mit beiden
fast gar keine Gemeinsamkeiten.
blue notes, Anklnge an Cowboysongs, Jazz
und traditionelle jdische Musik.
Coplands etwa gleichaltriger Kollege
Samuel Barber Vol. 82 komponierte in einem

The two concertos performed here were initially reviled by the critics but are now among
the most popular works in the repertoire. The
first movement of the Violin Concerto (1878)
is fundamentally warmer and more lyrical than
its monumental counterpart in the Piano Concerto (187475), although it, too, has its share
of fireworks for the soloist. Both works slow
movements are soulfully lyrical; both finales,
dazzlingly virtuosic.

soll. Die langsamen Stze beider Werke sind
von lyrischer Beseeltheit, die Finali atemberaubend virtuos.

RICHARD WAGNER
One of the most controversial figures of 19thcentury music and among the most influential
composers of all time, Wagner led a turbulent
life, often fleeing from one city or country to
another and appropriating friends money and
wives as the tribute due a man of genius. He
was an anti-Semitic, xenophobic bigot, yet
managed to endow the world with ten prodigious operatic masterpieces, for which he
wrote the texts as well as the music. Their
overtures and preludes heard here can also be
enjoyed in their own right as concentrated
musical dramas without words, and are as
popular among concert audiences as among
opera lovers.

Verdis genius for melody and for characterization were unsurpassed by any other opera
composer except Mozart. Success came in
1842 with Nabucco, credited by an early biographer with setting off the first political demonstrations that led to Italian reunification.
His extraordinarily long career ended in glory
with two unparalleled masterpieces based on
Shakespeare Otello (1887) and Falstaff
(1893). Aida, set in ancient Egypt, is a drama
of love and hate, loyalty and betrayal. The
pomp and splendour of its great massed
scenes are set against intimate scenes of
searing emotion. Since its premiere in 1871
at the new Cairo Opera House, many of the
worlds greatest singers and conductors have
lavished their attention on Aida. In our own
day its exotic and spectacular features have

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: SCHEHERAZADE
CAPRICCIO ESPAGNOL
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was born into an
aristocratic family and opted at first for a naval
career. Although he began his musical career
as an amateur composer with little formal
training, he became a key figure in the movement to foster Russian nationalist music. As
professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory
he influenced two generations of Russian
musicians, including Stravinsky. Heard here
are Rimskys two most popular works. The
brilliant orchestration of the Capriccio espagnol (1887) is, in his own words, the very
essence of the composition, not its mere
dressing-up. Scheherazade (1888) is a classic example of the Russian predilection in
Rimskys time for exotic orchestral colours
and all things Oriental. This symphonic suite
was inspired by tales from the 1001 Nights,
whose narrating character, represented musically by a solo violin, lends the work its title.

dauerhaft nieder. Wie Schubert wurde auch
ihm erst posthum die volle Anerkennung zuteil;
eng miteinander verknpft: Die Symphonie

GUSTAV MAHLER
Symphony No. 5
Mahler was one of the great transitional figures in music history: his symphonies and
songs belong to the Classical-Romantic tradition that stretched from Haydn, Mozart,
Beethoven and Schubert through Berlioz,
Liszt, Wagner, Brahms and Bruckner; but the
innovations he made in orchestration and harmony, especially in his late works, had a powerful influence on the younger Viennese composers Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. Mahler
did most of the work on his five-movement
Fifth Symphony a massive work in both
length and instrumentation during the last
summer of his bachelorhood (1901) and the
first summer following his marriage to Alma
Schindler (1902). My time will come, said
Mahler of his music, which probably because
of its existential ambiguity only now, in the
nuclear age, has become an indispensable
part of the repertoire.

PUCCINI: LA BOHME
Puccini belonged to the last of five generations
in a family of musicians. He was also the last
Italian composer to conquer the stages of the
world. Yet his best-loved work, La bohme,
based on episodes from Henri Murgers novel
Scenes of Bohemian Life, flopped at its premiere in Turin in 1896; It wont make the
rounds, wrote a prominent critic. Not until a
few months later in Palermo did the opera triumph even though the superstitious conductor was nervous about the premiere taking
place on Friday the 13th. From that moment
La bohmes fame spread like wildfire. Now
that the world has had a century in which to
get to know it, there can be no doubt that the
opera has hardly any unhummable tunes or
that it is as solidly crafted as a battleship. Puccini gave each character a strong musical
individuality (Rodolfos lan, Mims sweetness
and fragility, Marcellos hot-headedness,

Pomp and Circumstance (Land of Hope and
Oratorium The Dream of Gerontius, das zweifellos sein Meisterwerk darstellt.
Hrern beschftigt. Auch Holst, ebenfalls ein

Orchester geschrieben ist, denn fortan musste
er mit tosendem Beifall, berschwnglichen
Bewunderern und klatschhungrigen Reportern
fertig werden.
