Citizen Of The Year
The Knights of Columbus announced Nelsons 2015

Citizen of the Year to be Susanne Raschdorf. Raschdorf,
a North Shore resident, is a former city councillor (19801981). She was a founding member of the Nelson branch
of the Canadian Diabetic Association, volunteered with
the Lady Lions Club, served on the United Appeal committee and the boards of the Nelson and District Credit
Union, Co-operative College of Canada, Osprey Foundation and Kootenay Lake Hospital. She was also a charter
member of the Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak. Most
recently, she has volunteered with the Learning in Retirement program.
A banquet in Raschdorf s honour will be held on Friday,
April 8 at St. Josephs School at 6 pm. Tickets are $40 and
available at the Nelson Star office, Suite B, 91 Baker Street.

Lilly & Abigale

Lilly and Abigale are one year old short haired orange
tabbies that came to the Trail BCSPCA January 19, 2016
when their owner could no longer care for them. Lilly
and Abigail are very bonded and will be adopted as a
discounted pair. Lilly is really coming out of her shell
since arriving here at the shelter. She was very nervous,
but has made a lot of improvement. Lilly is really sweet
when given time, love and patience. Abigale is a very
social, gentle cat. These girls love to play with toys. Both
cats came to the shelter with an eye condition. They
have had surgery and are recovering quite well. These
girls would be great indoor/outdoor cats and are great
mousers! If you would like to meet these girls, come to
the Trail Regional BCSPCA.

and CEO. Access to high-speed internet can help improve
the quality of life and prosperity of Basin communities,

thrive.

Affordable housing, poverty reduction, social inclusion, early childhood education these are all important
factors that contribute to social well-being in our communities. In partnership with local social service agencies
across the region, the Columbia Basin Rural Development
Institute (RDI) is hosting workshops in several communities, starting with Trail on April 7.
These community conversations bring people together
to explore both challenges and new ideas for improving social well-being in our region, says RDI researcher
Nadine Raynolds.
The workshop builds upon RDIs recent research on the
characteristics, capacity, and challenges of the nonprofit
social sector and Raynolds will share results from a survey of 88 organizations, along with a discussion on social
determinants of health and indicators of social well-being
that are being explored through the RDIs State of the
Basin Initiative.
This first workshop in Trail is hosted in partnership with
The Skills Centre. An important part of our discussion is
to look at how we can work together across sectors here in
Greater Trail, says Jan Morton, executive director. Community members from nonprofits, government, business,
planners and anyone else interested and invested in our
community social well-being are invited to participate.
A significant part of the workshop is a focus group dialogue on whats working well, new ideas to strengthen the
social sector and how groups can better work together to
improve our community and regional social well-being.

This Fraud Awareness Month, Insurance Bureau of

Canada (IBC) offers its Top 10 tips to protect against
cyber fraud and online identity theft.
We all spend a lot of time on the internet, which has
made everyday life more convenient. Now with the click
of a button we can pay bills, check our bank account balances or connect with people through social media, which
is why you must remain vigilant about what you share
online and who sees it , said Garry Robertson, national
director, Investigative Services, IBC.
In recent years, identity theft has increased across Canada. Thieves are scanning the internet looking for personal information that will allow them to assume another
persons identity. Using stolen information, a criminal
could use your name to secure a credit card, take out a
mortgage, or even commit insurance fraud.
You may not realize you have been a victim until it
is too late, costing you time and money to rectify the
damage, added Robertson. Consumers need to ensure

they are protecting themselves online, which is why we

urge you to read IBCs top 10 ways to protect yourselves
against cyber fraud and online identity theft, and share
these tips with your family and friends.
IBCs Top 10 Ways to Protect Against Cyber Fraud and
Online Identity Theft are:
Be cautious about sharing your personal information online, including your insurance policy number and birthdate.
Guard your financial information. If you shop, do
insurance transactions or banking online, make
sure you arent saving personal financial information, such as credit card numbers, that someone
could easily take.
Change your login and passwords regularly, especially if you use a public computer. Make your
passwords hard to decipher by using numbers and
characters in addition to letters.
Ensure that a website is trustworthy before clicking
on a link in an email. If you have any doubt that an
email is from the institution that it says its from,
contact the company to confirm that they sent the
email. Criminals often use phishing, which uses an
official looking email to direct you to a website that
looks legitimate, to steal personal information.
Install security software and anti spyware programs
on your computer. Activate your firewall and use
antivirus software.
Only download programs from reputable websites
that you know are trustworthy.
When making an insurance claim, regularly check
the payments made by your insurance company on
your behalf throughout the process. Keep an eye
out for any unusual activity.
Be social media savvy. Set your social media profiles to the private setting and be careful what you
post online.
Make sure your WiFi network at home is protected.
When using public hot spots, recognize that the
data you share is vulnerable and do not conduct
financial transactions, such as obtaining automobile or home insurance, on these networks.
Never give personal information over email or
phone to someone who has contacted you to ask for
it, without authenticating their identity.
If you use credit cards or borrow money, it is a good
idea to periodically order a credit check on yourself
to ensure everything is in order.
Take the time to report the crime. If you fall victim to
fraud, file a report with your local police, or the provincial or territorial branch of Crime Stoppers. Or, make an
anonymous call to 1-877-IBC-TIPS (1-877-422-8477) or
complete an online tip form.

Concertmasters Duo In Kaslo
Kaslo Concert Society presents a Concertmasters Duo

on Monday, April 18 at St. Andrews United Church,
beginning at 7 pm.
Jonathan Crow and Andrew Wan are concertmasters of
the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. To quote Jonathan, Andrew and I play
in a string quartet together and decided a few years back
that it might be fun to put together a Concertmaster duo!
We commissioned a few works and realized that there
was a lot of great repertoire for two violins that was being
neglected. We reserve a few weeks every year to present
programs of music that people dont often get to hear and
we have had a great time doing it!
Their repertoire ranges from Baroque (LeClair) to
Romantic (Spohr) to Moderns (Bartok and Prokofiev)
and a piece by Canadian composer Maxime McKinley
commissioned by Jonathan and Andrew.
Tickets are $22 and available at the door on the night
of the concert. School age children admitted free when
accompanied by an adult patron. The new ramp at St.
Andrews United Church now makes the venue accessible
to everyone.

How you react in a bear encounter can dramatically
change the outcome. Deciding whats best to do when
you meet a bear can be very confusing, especially with
so much conflicting information in the media and on the
internet. If you meet the wrong bear, at the wrong time,
in the wrong place, reacting appropriately could help you
avoid injury. Alternatively, reacting badly in what begins
as a benign situation, could actually trigger an attack.
Learn the difference between defensive and non defensive behaviour by bears, what to do in various scenarios
and most importantly, how to avoid encounters and precarious situations in the first place.

Nelson Curling Club wrapped up their 2015-2016 season on Saturday, March 19 with League Playoffs. The winners of the events are as follows:

Friends and family were out in full force to cheer on their
favourites. The event was rounded off with evening festivities that included music, pizza, good friends and good times.
It was a very busy year for the Nelson Curling Club, the
highlight was the hosting of the BC Mens Provincial Curling Championship, which was won by the Jim Cotter rink
from Vernon. Our youth development program delivered
curling to hundreds of school age participants. And our
volunteers and board of directors were busy organizing
many events and bonspiels.
