Aisyah read her book immediately after coming back from school. It was
the first time that she had read about wizards, gnomes, witches and
magical powers. Although the book was bulky, every page was engaging.
Aisyah could not put the book down until she had finished reading the last
page. She was glad that her mother had bought her the book for her
birthday.

Did you know that almonds contain the richest source of nutrients?
Best yet, it can be used in many different ways. Eat it raw or toasted
or use it for savoury and sweet dishes. Dont forget to add to your
baked goods too. If you are lactose intolerant or vegan, try making
your own almond milk which is not only healthy but also tastes
heavenly. Get your fill on this nut with either the sweet or bitter
type. The former is edible while the latter is used to make almond
oil to enhance flavour in your food.

Many anglers consider the kelah the King of Freshwater Fishes in Malaysia.
Popularly known as the Malayan Golden Mahseer, the local kelah is an elusive
native fish of Malaysia that calls the many rivers of East and West Malaysia its
home. The kelah averages 20-40cm in length but will grow up to almost a metre. It
is a beautiful and elegant fish, prized by both anglers and diners alike.
Anglers prize them for their awesome grace and beauty, especially the red species.
Landing one gives the angler unlimited bragging rights in the most prestigious of
angling circles. Commercial fishermen on the other hand, prize them for their
market value. Some fine-dining restaurants are charging as much as RM100 per kg
due to their rarity and tender sweet flesh favoured by diners.
10
Unfortunately, this elegant river monsters prized status means that anglers and
commercial fishermen are hunting down this beautiful fish in ever increasing
numbers. Unchecked, relentless hunting of this fish by anglers, commercial
fishermen and poachers alike has driven the kelah to the verge of extinction. This,
together with uncontrolled deforestation due to land clearing and timber harvesting 15
activities upriver, has threatened the habitat of these precious species.
Some poachers also resort to cruel methods of fish harvesting using bombs, poison
and electrocution. The quality of river water has, over the years, gradually
deteriorated with industrialisation, especially in the lower reaches, forcing the fish
to move further upriver in search of a safer habitat. If these activities are not 20
checked, we might one day have to say goodbye to this beautiful Malaysian
heritage!
Fortunately for anglers, the authorities have recognised the plight of this fish and
since 2000, have gazetted many rivers and parks as a reserve where no fishing by
whatever means is allowed. Education by some fishing bodies has encouraged 30
anglers to practise catch and release. The relevant authorities also encourage them
to report any illegal logging or poaching. Poachers and illegal loggers will be
slapped with hefty fines, if found guilty. All these efforts should allow the fish
population to multiply again although they are still far less than the numbers that
we used to see in the past.

Research has also been done on the possibility of breeding these fishes, prompted
by India, which has successfully bred the Indian Mahseer, a species closely related
to the kelah, in captivity. Thailand has also reported success in breeding the kelah,
as it is also a native species there. Therefore, research should also be carried out in
Malaysia to breed the kelah. Technical guidance and professional advice from 40
experts will make aquaculture even more promising, especially in net cage culture
in rivers and reservoirs where the water is clean.
One of the biggest obstacles faced by the authorities is the very slow growth rate
of the kelah. It takes almost three years for a hatchling to grow up to 3kg and it
will take an amazing 30 years for it to grow to 8kg, depending on its environment 45
and food sources. This explains why anglers are hard-pressed to land double-digit
kelahs these days. On the plus side, this awesome fish can live for up to 50 years,
which means that if they are well protected, they can provide joy for up to two
generations. This makes it all the more important that this fish is well protected
and prevented from becoming extinct.

The Charge of the Light Brigade
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns! he said
Into the Valley of Death
Rode the six hundred
Forward, the Light Brigade!
Was there a man dismayed?
Not through the soldier knew
Some one had blundered,
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred

'Ah-Ma,' he began, then stopped. Quickly he looked at the doorway and
checked that there was no one there. Then he bent his head and shoulders and
bow deeply, once, twice, three times. Some joss sticks, he thought, I should like
some joss sticks. He went to the desk. One by one he pulled the drawers open,
but he could find no joss sticks.
There was one drawer which would not open. The joss sticks, he
thought, must be in there, with all the things that were most important to her. He
pulled again at that drawer, harder this time, but it stayed shut. And then he
realized that she always kept it locked. And he did not know where she hid the
key.
