Class Participation Rubric

A rubric is a chart that categorizes important skills connected with a class requirement and/or assignment. LEVELS of
PROFICIENCY are based on what has been either achieved by the student and/or perceived by the instructor. Students are
encouraged to consider each particular level and the behavioral objectives listed within each box. Overall proficiency may be
calculated by averaging the point values below and placing that value on the grading scale. Class Participation does remain a
significant percentage of the students overall grade. The class syllabus will note that percentage.

PARTICIPATION in
Class Discussion,
Lecture, or Activity
(25 points)

DISTINGUISHED
Student is engaged in class
discussion and/or activity
by appropriately adding to
the classs learning during
all class sessions.
Participation is
consistently supplemental
and supportive.

PROFICIENT
Student is often engaged in class
discussion and/or activity and is
fully attentive during all class
sessions. There are sporadic
attempts to participate and add
to the classs learning in an
appropriate, timely manner.

APPRENTICE
Student struggles to remain
engaged in class discussion
and/or activity, preferring to
spend time engaging in
extramural activities (surfing
the Web, texting, emailing).
There is little attempt to
participate.

NOVICE
Student is minimally
engaged in class
discussion and/or lecture.
If called upon, the student
is lost or distracted. There
are no attempts to
participate.

Students attendance is
perfect, and he/she is neither
tardy nor disruptive. He/she
is consistently prepared for
class.

Students attendance is near

perfect, missing one to two
class sessions. He/she has
notified the instructor of the
absence(s) in advance and
maintains course preparation.

Students attendance is within

the three absent limit. He/she
has not notified the instructor
of the absence(s) at least once.
Occasional tardiness and/or
lack of preparation noted.

Students attendance is
warrants an academic
penalty. Student may
struggle with tardiness
and/or a lack of
preparation.

Student participates and

offers college level
discussion and/or work
with all activities and/or
assignments. The level of
student effort is exemplary
and does not impede any
other students attempt to
display his/her own level of
effort and participation.

Student participates and

frequently offers college level
discussion and/or work.
Discussion and/or work can be
improved, but is satisfactory
according to college standards
and course objectives. Students
attempt to display his/her own
level of effort and participation
does not impede any other
students attempt to do the same.

Student is working on his/her

skills in class participation and
discussion. Work submitted by
student may be flawed by
college standards and course
objectives, but is acceptable
according to its individual
assignment, due to the apparent
effort the student is putting in
to its completion.

Due to the students lack of

engagement in class
activity and/or discussion,
there is a perception of
minimal effort. Work
submitted by student is
substandard by college
standards and course
objectives reflecting effort
that needs immediate
improvement.

Student frequently, if
not always, displays a
positive attitude toward
learning and sharing
knowledge with others.
Others frequently
acknowledge his/her
contributions to the
learning process.

Student usually displays a

positive attitude toward
learning and sharing
knowledge with others.
Others may acknowledge
his/her contributions to the
learning process.

Although he/she might be

usually positive in attitude,
student may have had a bad
day, or two, where he/she
displayed a negative or
indifferent attitude. Others
rarely acknowledge his/her
contributions to the learning
process.

Involvement in class
activity seems to be an
inconvenience and intrusion
in this students life most
days. Others would say
he/she may have detracted
from the learning process.
